INDIA VS. PAKISTAN FACE-OFF AT WAGAH/ATTARI BORDER CEREMONY (WITH COMMENTARY)! (4K)

The Wagah/Attari Border Ceremony at the India-Pakistan border, which has occurred here since 1959, is the most unique and surreal changing of the guard/flag lowering ceremony in the world. Why? Because India and Pakistan are basically enemies and have fought three wars against each other since 1947 and even today, they are technically still at war over the disputed territory of Kashmir. Furthermore, soldiers from each side come within inches of crossing each other's border, as they continually taunt and try to outdo each other with high-stepping, chest puffing, arm waving, and clenched fists. What makes this ceremony even more unique is the festive pre-ceremony; I felt like I was at an American football game instead of being at a tense border ceremony. In fact, the pre-ceremony is just as fascinating as the ceremony itself. Despite the rivalry, it was a display of pageantry, respect, and cooperation, which gives me hope for the future of Indian-Pakistani relations!

The pomp and pageantry of the Beating Retreat and the Change of Guard within handshaking distance of the Indian and Pakistani forces make for a most charming spectacle. The daily highlight is the evening “Beating the Retreat” ceremony. Soldiers from both countries march in perfect drills, going through the steps of bringing down their respective national flags. As the sun goes down, nationalistic fervor rises, and lights are switched on, marking the end of the day amidst thunderous applause.

The Wagah Attari border ceremony started in 1986 as an agreement of peace, although there was no conflict. Other Middle Eastern nations have adopted similar ceremonies in recent years.

Beating Retreat ceremony at JCP Attari-Wagah border with CM Bhagwant Maan Ji

This ceremony takes place at the Attari–Wagah border, which is part of the Grand Trunk Road. Prior to the opening of the Aman Setu in Kashmir in 1999, it was the only road link between these two countries. It is called the Beating Retreat border ceremony on the international level.
The ceremony starts every evening immediately before sunset with a blustering parade by the soldiers from both sides, and ends with the perfectly coordinated lowering of the two nations' flags.[3] One infantryman stands at attention on each side of the gate. As the sun sets, the iron gates at the border are opened and the two flags are lowered simultaneously. The flags are then folded, and the ceremony ends with a retreat that involves a brusque handshake between soldiers from either side, followed by the closing of the gates again. The spectacle of the ceremony attracts many visitors from both sides of the border, as well as international tourists. The soldiers of this ceremony are specially appointed and trained for this auspicious ceremony. They also have a beard and moustache policy for which they are paid additionally.
