Historical Images : Royal Australian Army - Armoured Corps (1939 -1952)

The Royal Australian Army - Armoured Corps (Tanks and Armoured Vehicles) during WW2 and post WW2 (Korean War). A photographic video of Australians on the frontline and post war duties.

Australians were involved in every field of conflict and in every region from Europe, Africa, Middle East, the Pacific and Korean War.

Unfortunately the images are collected from the State Library and there was no or very limited information; Just the date and sometimes the location if lucky ... I surmise these photos were donated to the library via private collections or just from individuals that find old photos and saw some historical value and didn't want to dump them ... I too wish there was more background information with the photos or even names of individuals within the photos, but there isn't. The audio information is what was noted in the archive of each photograph.

Australian World War Two History, Labuan Island, Borneo, Malaysia

I visit the Labaun War Memorial and Surrender Point with local expat Australian Peter Searle.

Peter discusses the Sandakan Death March, the greatest single atrocity committed against Australians in war. It is believed that almost
3,600 Indonesians, 1,787 Australians, and 641 British prisoners died at, or between, Sandakan and Ranau.

At Surrender Point on Labuan, the 32nd Japanese Southern Army surrendered to the 9th Division Australian Imperial Forces on 9th September 1945 which led to the end of World War II in Borneo.

The Australian 9th Division, Rats of Tobruk, were heavily involved in reconstructing British North Borneo and rebuilt and re-established a considerable amount of civil infrastructure. The division developed a warm relationship with the local people and its efforts were recognised by the incorporation of the division's colour patch in the coat of arms of the new Colony of British Borneo. These arms were used until British Borneo became the Malaysian state of Sabah in 1963.

A big thank you to Historian, Lynette Silver for clarifying some historical points via email. For more information on any of the above history visit:

Sarawak Adventures, Ep. 39: Sarawak at War - Confronting the Confrontation;

World War 2 brought winds of change to all the colonies of the Western countries. Sarawak was one of them. WW2 caused Sarawak to experience 3 types of governments in 5 years. 15 years later, another important decision had to made, a decision that would bring about a confrontation with its neighbour. This video very briefly look back at the Confrontation in Sarawak.
The events are based on the book 'Crimson Tide Over Borneo' by James Ritchie. All photographs unless stated in the video, are taken from the same book. Background music is from Bensound and Mixkit. To James Ritchie, Wikipedia, Commando Veterans Organisation and many others, I thank you as this video is made based on your information and photographs.

14 Interesting Facts About Borneo

Borneo, a giant, rugged island in Southeast Asia’s Malay Archipelago, is shared by the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, Indonesian Kalimantan and the tiny nation of Brunei.

It’s known for its beaches and ancient, biodiverse rainforest, home to wildlife including orangutans and clouded leopards.

In Sabah is 4,095m-tall Mount Kinabalu, the island’s highest peak, and, offshore, the famed dive site Sipadan Island.

DESCENDANT OF BORNEO HEAD HUNTERS

Borneo still lures with myths and legends, and most famous of all stories are probably those about headhunting.

Already in early colonial days Borneo gained its reputation as a place where ‘head-hunters roam in wild and untamed jungles.’ Reports of daring adventurers and explorers were chilling enough: long, communal houses, and from the smoke blackened rafters hung endless rows of human skulls, revered in song and deed.

Some of the skulls made it back to Europe, and inspired the imagination of early 20th century citizens with awe. But what was really behind head-hunting? Was it the cruel and barbarous custom as promoted by the invading ‘cultured’ colonisers, and Christian missionaries?

The definition of cruel and gruesome is different in each culture. Headhunting in Borneo served particular purposes, varying slightly with the different tribes: defence, proof of manhood and spiritual. It was always an aspect of their life, intrinsically linked to cosmology, agriculture, human fertility and religious power.

To put it a bit sloppily: while in olden days people in Borneo lived under the constant threat of head-hunting, most of us live today with the constant danger of being run over by a car…

The practice of headhunting has mostly ceased, but their stories and history still live on in museums and on stages whenever they have a cultural celebration

The Island Of Borneo-Kuching, Sarawak-Random Thoughts, Advice, Highlights

I'm often surprised by certain things about a new place I've visited or discovered. Never more than on my recent trip to Kuching, Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo where I found the local people were especially friendly and welcoming. Random greetings while crossing the street, hello, welcome! Where you from? Sometimes a hello from a group of students walking home from school or just people you cross paths with in the air conditioned modern shopping mall. Island people I've found, for the most part, are generally laid-back, easy-going and friendly. I've met and have had amazing hospitality on my most recent trip to Sabah on Borneo as well. And of course the people of Taiwan are known for being some of the friendliest people on the planet. I hope the Sarawak Tourism Bureau has a big party for their people because these are the kinds of things that most visitors will remember and tell their friends and others about when they're asked what their trip was like. No doubt you're going to have some pretty awesome memories if you visit Semenggoh, the orangu-tan sanctuary or spend a day or two in Bako National Park. Having Sarawak's famous Laksa, noodle soup for breakfast, gorging on some of the cheapest and best seafood in Southeast Asia at the UTC Top Spot Food Court will certainly be big takeaways from a visit to Kuching. I can guarantee you though that provided you didn't spend your whole time in your hotel or guesthouse room, it's the kind-hearted and friendly people of Kuching that will be one of your strongest impressions of a visit to Sarawak. In this episode of the podcast I'm experimenting with a different format including more travel advice and tips that's specific to the place featured. Of course I will continue to bring you the best experiences the area has to offer. In upcoming episodes watch out for my visit to the Semenggoh Orangu-tan Reserve, Bako National Park as well as other not to be missed sites around Kuching. I was really impressed with Kuching, the range of guesthouses and hotels, the exceptional food and overall value, Old Chinatown, India Street, and of course the wonderful boardwalk along the Sarawak River. There are amazing adventure activities that can be day trips while you maintain your base in Kuching. I'm thinking if you are coming from a Western country try to devote 5-7 days around the area which could include one or two nights in Bako National Park. If you're an Asian based traveller Kuching could be a great long weekend getaway. Many Asian cities have direct flights to Kuching and Air Asia has several everyday from Kuala Lumpur. LOST IN INDONESIA 57 JAPANESE SUB

Last POW Camp Memorial (Kundasang War Memorial) - Explore Sabahan

Tugu Peringatan Kem Tawanan Perang Terakhir

The memorial is located about 8 kilometres south of Ranau on the road to Tambunan above the Liwagu Valley. The memorial is fenced, but is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to the public. On a large concrete surface in the shape of a star is a stele of concrete. In the concrete surface, 1,047 boulders originate from the Liwagu River (the river flows below the memorial site) been inserted. Each of these stones on the concrete surface symbolises every person who became the prisoners of war.[1]

The stele is also made of concrete. Another 183 river stones are set into the concrete of the stele; one for each prisoner of war who died in this camp on Liwagu River. On the memorial stone there are four furrowed stone slabs. It stand for the four prisoners of war, who managed to escape during the death march. On each of the four sides of the stele is a stone slab of polished granite embedded. Three panels about the history of the death marches are shown in English, Chinese and Malay. On the fourth granite slab, the names of 183 prisoners of war are perpetuated.[1]
