Flam: The most beautiful train journey in the world? BBC News

Subscribe to BBC News
One of the most beautiful railways in the world has had one of its most successful summers on record. The 20km train ride from Flam, at the end of the Unesco-protected Aurlandsfjord, through precipices and past huge waterfalls to a height of 866m at Myrdal, in Western Norway, is regarded as an engineering marvel because of the steep gradient. BBC News took a ride in the company of veteran guard Knut Kvamme. Video Journalist: Malcolm Brabant

Oslo to Bergen, Norway by Train through the mountains and Boat through the fjords

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
We’re going to take you on one of the most spectacular train rides in all of Europe: starting in Oslo, we’re heading cross-country through fascinating mountain terrain, passing lakes and rivers and waterfalls, and then by boat through a vast fjord, finally we will be arriving later in the day at the ancient capital of Norway the town of Bergen. This special trip is called Norway in a Nutshell. Showing you a big cross-section of the country in just one day.
Please subscribe:
The scenery keeps getting more spectacular as we climb through the central regions of Norway, getting a little bit like Switzerland with tall mountains in the distance and glaciers, with lakes where the water is clear blue color.
We change trains mid-way at Myrdal and board the Flam railway which is one of the most scenic rides in Europe. It travels about four miles from the mountain tops down through seven lush valleys to the waters below in the Sognefjord, Norway’s largest fjord. There we catch a boat to Bergen through the Sognefjord. There's lots of great scenery during the boat ride, with the mountains towering high above on both sides of this chasm.

Oslo to Bergen, Norway by train along the stunning Bergensbana. A beautiful railway journey.

The train between Oslo and Bergen in Norway brings you along some pretty scenic landscapes, Europe's biggest mountain plateau, the Hardangervidda. It's not just a relaxed and sustainable way to travel between Norway's biggest cities, it's also one of the prettiest railway journeys you can imagine. Join me on board of the Bergensbanen where I'll show you Oslo Central railway station, the trains and the views from the train.

▬▬▬▬▬▬ ABOUT TICKETS ▬▬▬▬▬▬
You can book tickets on (make sure you only select trains and you select for the towns the names with station at the end, otherwise it doesn't work well) of on the website If a train is fully booked, you can try to split your ticket. The train is almost never 100% fully booked for the entire journey because people also might take this train for shorter sections of the route.

In general, if you book train tickets in advance, you have lower ticket prices (promotion fares). For fully flexible tickets, you'll pay the full price.

For this train tickets do always come including a seat reservation. I was traveling with Interrail, also for Interrail passengers it's obligaded to reserve a seat. In Norway there is no 1st class, however on some routes there is a kind of extra class, that's the pluss class om this route. For a Pluss class reservation the Interrail / Eurail surcharge is higher.

Because trains can be fully booked, the bus is the 2nd alternative to me. Busses can be booked (at least time tables can be found) via the Entur website as well.

???????? The BEST train ride in the World?! Oslo to Bergen ???? Walking Tour of Bergen ????????????????‍♀️

Is this the best train ride in the world?! Some would argue so, including me. We wake up early in Oslo and head straight to the train station to catch the train journey of a life time. We were Bergen bound baby! This is a train ride that I've wanted to do for a long time and as the saying goes....now is the time ????

Little did Fabiola know that I'd booked us a private cabin for the 8 hour trip (I know I know, I'm such a romantic) and I would highly recommend this is the pocket allows you to do so. The viewing opportunities that you can get are far more than if you were to be sat in a normal seat, especially if it's a bust train which there is a good chance it will be.

We left Oslo about 10am and for over 7 hours we got blessed with some of the best landscapes an eye can see. Starting in the lowland of Oslo and slowly climbing to the highest point, which is a small town called Finse. This place is so remote that no public roads connect it to the rest of Norway, meaning train is the only way in and out ????

From there we slowly descended down to Bergen, passing by some more small villages and incredible sights. If you like landscapes and you like train rides this video is definitely for you. Once in Bergen we go on a waling tour of the town, which again, is very pleasing to the eye come rain wind or shine. For us it was mainly rain ☔

Anyway's, please, come and join us for the second stint of this cracking adventure around Norway.
Below is the link to the playlist if you'd like to catch up from the beginning ????????

Have you been to Norway? If so, what were your favourite places??
Until the next one, take care folks. Peace ✌????????

The Bergen Line (Bergensbanen) - Europe’s best train journey!

Experience one of Europe’s most beautiful train journeys. The Bergen Line is the scenic mountain track to the fjords.

A trip on the Bergen Line offers one of the most spectacular scenic experiences in Europe. It crosses the Hardangervidda National Park, onto the Hardangervidda plateau, Europe’s largest high mountain plateau.

The Bergen Railway was built in 1909 and runs over the highlands between Oslo and Bergen. These are the two largest cities in Norway. The Bergen Line is Northern Europe’s highest railway line, reaching 1,222 metres above sea level at Finse train station.

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! So we extended our 1 year trip to now FOUR years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

Further information:
This video reviews the train journey from Bergen to Oslo, Norway in October 2017. Captions will give you further information and tips about this very scenic journey. This train is run by Norway national state railways: NSB (Norges Statsbaner AS - since April 2019 NSB was rebranded as Vy).

I read so much about it and unfortunately a previous trip to Oslo didn't give me the chance to experience this epic train journey on the Bergen Line (Bergensbanen).

Known for its wet weather, Bergen offered a stunning sunny and crisp weather for my stay there and (apart for some morning mist), I enjoy the same sunny weather during my journey to Oslo.

The views were spectacular and the autumn colours added a special dimension to the landscape offered. The time flew past and the changing landscape from fjords, barren high altitude plateau, snow capped mountains and pine forests and lakes kept my attention high throughout the journey. I can't recommend enough this experience. Is it one of Europe's or the World's best train journey? You decide - maybe from this video or experiencing for yourself.

I bought the tickets online directly from NSB:

My train journey was to take more than the 6hr 45 min scheduled. The train was delayed by more than an hour - a quick search online confirmed that I was entitled to a refund for such a delay:

The train also stops at Myrdal station where you can take the branch line to Flåm. This service is privately run and tickets can be bought on the link below:

From Bergen to Oslo: A Majestic Winter Train Expedition in Pluss Car

Bergen Line Norway | Bergen to Oslo | Winter Train Ride | Train Report | Pluss Car (First Class)

In this video you will join me on this beautiful train journey from Bergen to Oslo. I'll be in the Pluss car which is the Bergen Line's version of first class. You'll see the layout, comfort, and even learn some history about the famous route. This journey will take us 7 hours to complete.

I will do a quick tour of the train station too and show you where you can get your tickets and food. The Bergen Line takes you through beautiful scenery, the Hallingdal valley, across the Hardangervidda National Park with views of mountain peaks and the Hardangerjokulen glacier at Finse, rocky areas with tunnels, the Vosso river & the Sorfjord between Voss and Bergen. The line makes stops at villages and popular ski resorts en route.

The views from the train are stunning and perfect for all winter travelers. The interior of the train is really nice too, comfy seats and lots of space. The restroom was a good size too and had nature themed wallpaper which was a nice touch. As you’re going along, you get to see how people are living and the small villages.

Top 10 amazing attractions of Oslo HD - (Norway 10 days family trip report-1)

It was such a great experience to visit Norway for 10 days in July and explore the best of each of Norway, an amazing but a very expensive country. I went to Oslo, Bergen and from Bergen we did a 5 day road trip into total wilderness of Norway including fjords, snow, waterfalls, tunnels, mountains, lakes etc. Each destination was very unique and for photographers and nature lovers, this is the place to be in Summer. Thank you for the memories, Norway! I'll be back someday to explore you more.

Oslo Airport tips:
When you arrive at Gardermoen you can buy NSB (local railway) tickets for 90NOK per person one way. These take you to Oslo S (the central bus and train station) in about 25 mins. It is cheap and very easy. The machines are easy to work and there are no charges for using them. In Norway using a card to pay for things is more normal than using cash. Once you get into town there are plenty of trams and buses right outside the station for your onward journey. Some locations might be walking distance.
