The Fight for Åland | The Finnish Islands That Wanted to Be Swedish
The Åland Islands lies between Sweden and Finland, and they caused great tension between these countries a hundred years ago. Let's explore this archipelago and see what all the fuss was about.
Åland is a pretty strange place in Scandinavia. It belongs to Finland, but it’s a self-governing territory with its own laws. And the people of Åland speak Swedish, and they share a lot of Swedish culture. Finland has sovereignty over the islands, but for a long time they wanted to belong to Sweden instead.
Less than 30 000 people live in Åland, on an area of roughly 1 500 square kilometers. And the main city of Åland is Mariehamn, a bustling metropolis of 11 000 people. Despite its small size, Åland has been of immense importance to the maritime traffic on the Baltic, as well as the military.
In this video I discuss the history of Åland as well as the politics leading up to the modern day. I also visit the Åland Museum of Cultural History, and the Maritime Museum which includes the four-masted steel barque Pommern. You will also see views from the western and eastern harbor of Mariehamn, as well as other areas of the city.
I didn't forget to mention the local brewery Stallhagen as well, and I also discuss the famous Champagne Schooner that sank close to the island of Föglö in the Åland archipelago. It was found with 145 intact bottles of champagne, and 5 bottles of beer - which were later auctioned off.
All this and a lot more, as I visit the Åland Islands - a strange little self-governing territory in the middle of the Baltic Sea.

Going to the Finnish island of Åland - My take-aways
My take-aways from going to the Finnish island of Åland. I took the Viking Line Baltic ferry Viking Grace from Stockholm, through the Stockholm archipelago to Åland islands and changed in Mariehamn to Viking Amorella back to Stockholm. This day trip to Aland islands is mostly to do tax free shopping and of course sing Finnish karaoke. How was the sun deck? How was the food? What could you do onboard? This questions are answered in the video.
My channel is packed with Swedish tutorials and language challenges where you can learn everything from nouns and verbs to grammar and special Swedish words. I also talk about places in Sweden and where you as a tourist can visit. I have made youtube videos for over 10 years and 10 Swedish Words started with me explaining 10 Swedish words that don't exist in English. WTF is there to do on Åland - public art and statues
In this video I show off some of the statues, busts and public art of Mariehamn, Åland.
I actually recorded a bunch more but I partly figured that the video would become too long and partly I was having issues with my video editing software, hence why I made it a bit shorter than it was initially inteded to be.
Things shown in the video are :
Two Memorials in memory of those lost at sea.
The piece of art Havets folk - people of the sea refering to how the local population has always been connected to the sea and made their living from it.
Nikolai Sittkoff - one of the foremost business men of Åland.
Maria Alexandrovna - the Russian Empress who the city of Mariehamn got its name from.
Gustava Stavamoster Andersson - The mother of seamen . A woman who looked after sailors so that they wouldn't just spend all their money on drinks and other unnecessary things while on shore.

Additionally I actually filmed, but ended up cutting some pieces of art around town and a few other busts and statues... maybe i'll use those clips in some future project, who knows.

Walking in Åland Islands - Mariehamn
(4K) Walking in the City Center of Mariehamn (in Finnish Maarianhamina) in Åland Islands on Thursday evening 21 May 2021. Åland is an archipelago in Baltic Sea. It is an autonomous, demilitarised and smallest region of Finland.
Mariehamn is the capital of the Åland Islands. Åland Islands and Mariehamn is unilingually Swedish-speaking territory. Cruise ferries from Finland, Estonia and Sweden all stop at Mariehamn.

This walk starts in front of the Mariehamn Town Hall, goes through the pedestrian street of the city center, continues to historical maritime quarter and ends in front of Ålands Lyceum.

In this ASVP episode Neil and myself talk about our stay in Rödhamn and what cruisers can expect when visiting this magical island and harbor.
A STERN VIEW PODCAST is a Sailing Podcast that is something of a cruising guide in audio form. Each episode is recorded onboard at the anchorage that is being discussed or reviewed.
The first season of the podcast I talked about each of the anchorages I visited on Santa Cruz Island in California's Channel Islands.

Vlog #1 WTH is there to do on Åland - Orrdalsklint
This video is the first in a series of Vlog-style videos where I go to visit various sites around the Åland Islands to show them off as there's nothing that covers all of the things you can see on Åland.
Orrdalsklint is the first piece of Åland to emerge out of the Yolida Sea some 10000 years ago. The peak is 129.1 meters above sea level and located in the municipality of Saltvik
The mountain, or it's more of a hill than a mountain, does have road access but you're not allowed to drive there as the road goes over private land. The only posibility to get there is to use your right to roam and walk there. From where you can park it's about 45 minutes walk uphill, or 15-20 minutes downhill, so it's quite a long walk to get up to the peak. But when you get there you'll have a spectacular view.

Aland Drone Flight: The Åland Islands, or Åland, is an autonomous region of Finland. Comprising around 6,700 islands, this Swedish-speaking archipelago is in the Baltic Sea. The capital, Mariehamn, on the main island of Fasta Åland, is known for its beaches and streets lined with 19th-century wooden townhouses, handicraft shops and cafes. Västerhamn, the towns western port, links Åland with Estonia, Sweden and mainland Finland. Västerhamn is home to the Åland Maritime Museum, with exhibits about the areas seafaring past, and the 4-masted sailing ship Pommern, which is moored beside the museum. Boatbuilding and crafts are on show in Sjökvarteret, the maritime quarter along Mariehamns eastern harbor. Kastelholm Castle, northeast of Mariehamn, dates back to the 14th century. Farther east are the ruins of Bomarsund, a Russian fortress destroyed in the Crimean War. Ferries from Grisslehamn, Sweden, land at Berghamn port on Eckerö Island, west of Fasta Åland.
