The Earliest Place on Earth (full video): Kiribati

This is the Earliest Place On Earth. They made thier own time zone! They are first to experience a new day and new year. You can visit, but make sure it's the right day!

One of the strangest things about the Diomede Islands is that they are in different days despite being only 2.5 miles apart. Diomede is not the only place like that. There’s actually a chain of islands in the Pacific that has its own time, the earliest time on earth.

Kiribati (“Kiribas”) is a country made up of small islands in the pacific that is far away from most other places. Its islands are spread out over 1.4 million miles of ocean. From end to end its like going from Chicago to LA, but its total land is only about half the size of the city of LA. It’s actually the only country in the world that sits in all 4 hemispheres.

The country’s islands span across the international date line, so that means that different parts of the country are in different days. In an effort to sync business days for ppl working on both sides of the nation, in 1995, Kiribati moved the international date line around its islands. So instead of a 24-hour difference, they made 2 new time zones to put everything on the same day. That gave the farthest islands of Kiribati - called the line islands - the earliest time zone on earth. The 8000 people that live there are technically the first to experience a new day and the first to celebrate the new year.

They actually renamed one of the islands Millennium Island in honor of being the first to pass the new millennium.

The moving of the date line had some funky consequences. Other places nearby that share virtually the same sunrise and sunset, like Hawaii, are actually experiencing a completely different day.

Kiribati is a fascinating place for lots of other reasons too. It’s one of the world’s most endangered nations due to rising seas, so the government bought 5500 acres in Fiji to relocate its population. Yes, they bought land in another country to move their country. Let’s hope they don’t have to.

Climate change never felt more real to my eyes until I arrived here in KIRIBATI - a small island nation in the Central Pacific Ocean.

The rising sea levels are quickly shrinking this country, which has a peak altitude of 3 meters. It's projected to be entirely underwater by the year 2100.

While many countries are feeling the impacts of climate change, nobody is more threatened right now than the 100,000+ residents of Kiribati.

The question now becomes, how do we prevent the people here from becoming climate refugees? The only 4 options I can think of are the following:

1. Build a higher sea wall (which will cost billions of USD)
2. Buy land overseas for them to relocate (will also cost a fortune)
3. Send more Kiribati citizens abroad (i.e. Australia and New Zealand) for jobs, and they can slowly adapt to a new life
4. Boost tourism in Kiribati so people can see firsthand the effects of climate change, which will also pump money back into the economy

Would love to get your thoughts on what we can do to help the wonderful people of Kiribati. I encourage you all to get creative and share your best solutions below. I will be reading and responding to as many comments as I can, and I encourage you to do the same. This is important.

Explore KIRIBATI history, Geography, And Culture

Kiribati, a Pacific island nation consisting of 33 atolls and islands, with a vast east-west expanse across multiple time zones. It covers an area of about 313 square miles, yet its islands span over 1.3 million square miles of ocean. The main island groups are the Gilbert, Phoenix, and Line Islands, characterized by low-lying coral atolls. Kiribati's 130,000 inhabitants, predominantly I-Kiribati, have a culture deeply connected to the sea and their environment. Christianity is the main religion, with a significant role in daily life. The Kiribati language and English are widely spoken. Traditional dishes like Batata Mash and Te Inai reflect the local diet focused on fish, coconut, and root vegetables. Kiribati's history involves early Micronesian settlers, colonization, and significant WWII events. Today, it faces challenges like climate change and economic limitations. Its economy relies on subsistence farming, fishing, and foreign aid, with growing tourism potential. Kiribati's culture emphasizes community, with traditions in arts, dance, and sports.

Sailing into Tarawa. A Kiribati welcome EP62

Sailing into Tarawa. A Kiribati welcome
Sailing into Kiribati OFF the beaten track

Hello KIRIBATI ! Getting OFF the beaten track EP62
We spend our last night at sea and arrive in Tarawa, Kiribati. It's our first ever visit onboard 'Double Trouble' to a country in the northern hemisphere. And boy, is it hot and humid!
After a very quick check- in process, we set about getting re-provisioned and resupplied.
Fresh veggies are in short supply and very expensive, ( $24 for a cabbage) but we get enough supplies onboard for a few weeks of 'off the grid' exploring.
We have favourable weather, so its time to up the anchor and head north 40 nautical miles to Abaiang atoll, where we drop the hook in the beautiful clear water of the lagoon and look forward to a few weeks of R&R.

????‍❤️‍????About us :
Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Jo and Rob and we are here to share our sailing adventures with you.
In 2016, inspired by the likes of ‘Delos’, ‘Sailing La Vagabonde’ and ‘Gone with The Wynns’, we sold up everything we owned and bought our 40ft, Fountaine Pajot ‘Lipari 41 Evo’ sailing catamaran ‘Double Trouble’. We had no sailing experience whatsoever, so the past few years have been a huge learning curve.
We thought it might be fun to document our travels for anyone thinking of following a similar lifestyle.
So far we have visited 7 different countries and sailed over 13,000 nautical miles.
We have had many unique experiences that would not have been possible in our prior life and we don’t regret a second.
We're both super keen on protecting our precious environment, so amongst other things, we both follow a plant based diet. You wont find any fishing footage on this channel!
Subscribe now and join us as we continue our salty travels around the world.

KIRIBATI: Lonely bridge ???? joins remote islands at TARAWA ATOLL (Pacific Ocean)

Kiribati, Pacific Ocean - remote bridge (Friendship Bridge) at the Tarawa Atoll in Kiribati, Pacific Ocean. Let's view the remote Friendship Bridge which connects the islands of Buota and Tanaea in the Tarawa Atoll in the Republic of Kiribati in the central Pacific Ocean. Friendship Bridge was built during Pacific Partnership 2009 and restored in 2013. Partnership 2009 included Australia, Canada, Colombia, France, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and New Zealand with the purpose to improve maritime security, conduct humanitarian assistance and strengthen disaster-response preparedness.
Tarawa is an atoll and the capital of the Republic of Kiribati, in the central Pacific Ocean. It comprises North Tarawa, which has 6,629 inhabitants and much in common with other more remote islands of the Gilberts group, and South Tarawa, which has 56,388 inhabitants as of 2015, half of the country's total population. The atoll was the site of the Battle of Tarawa during World War II.

Pacific Ocean Christmas Island, Samoa and Kiribati first to step into 2024 #newyear2024

New Year 2024 is being welcomed all over the world, while the first to step into 2024 are the residents of the Pacific states of Samoa and Kiribati.
Kiritimati, also known as Christmas Island, will be closely followed into the new year by neighbours Samoa and Tonga. Kiritimati Island will enter 2024 at around at 10am GMT (12:00 PM Athens) on December 31 - with Tonga and Samoa joining them at about 11am.
Kiritimati is actually located south of Hawaii but celebrates New Year’s Day a full day earlier due to a quirk of the international date line.
After Kiribati, the residents of the Far East of Asia and New Zealand will welcome the New Year, followed by Australia, Japan, Indonesia, China, India and other Asian countries, then Europe and Africa, and then both American continents.
