Maputo, Mozambique

This is an incredible African coastal city closer to Gauteng than Durban & situated less than 100km from the South African border (if travelling by vehicle). This city is well worth visiting if you are looking to visit a coastal city. Take a stroll along the coconut palm promenade. Marvel at the stark contrast between the modern & older Portuguese influenced architecture. Experience the bright lights of Maputo at night.

Polana, Maputo, Mozambique

This is the perfectly located condo for a stopover or even a longer visit in Maputo. For only 680ZAR/2300MZN/36USD per night. This condo can be booked directly on Airbnb here:

Walking distance to Maputo's main attractions, Maputo Bay & hangout spots! We are so happy with this accomodation for our brief stopover in Maputo as we drive further north to explore Mozambique.

Bilene, Mozambique

We’re in Bilene for the next leg of our Mozambique travel series! Bilene lies 200km north of Maputo in the Gaza Province. It’s famous for a few things and during this leg we’ll be experiencing them all - the expansive lagoon, dunes, delectable prego & sunsets! First we make a mandatory roadside Pao purchase before turning off towards Bilene.
We’re staying at Boa Vista Resort! It’s situated right on Lagoa Uembje (Lagoon). This 1 bedroom service chalet is only 1200MZN/R350/19USD per night for 2 adults. We found Boa Vista Resort on Agoda (prices may vary)

It’s self-catering & has an en-suite, patio, double bed, barbecue facilities and well located.

Perfectly appointed along Lagoa Uembje we have a front row seat for Bilene’s famous sunset! Known for its sunsets, we specifically chose Bilene to be able to experience some of the best sunsets you will ever experience.

Bilene is known for its unmissable dunes! Naturally separating Lagoa Uembje (Lagoon) & Praia do Bilene (beach), are dunes as high as mountains! Driving these dunes is a must when in Bilene! There are also many 4x4 tours which can be arranged. The setting is beyond anything you could imagine. Dunes as far as the eye can see.

A steep & dramatic entry facing the Indian Ocean. Coastal forest & vegetation atop these majestic dunes. Beauty & exhilaration in one spectacular natural setting!

We have observed that the heart of any coastal town is where the entrepreneurial spirit resides! These are the main streets of Bilene…

Colourful fabrics & carved wooden curios a fill the streets.
There’s no shortage of fresh produce & freshly baked pao (bread). We walked along the back streets of Bilene Town to find a locally prepared beef stew.

The entrepreneurs are welcoming, warm & wonderful! All you need for a comfortable stay in Bilene can be found in the town (ATMs, fuel, food & other essentials).

Things to do here:

1. Take a drive along the shores of the lagoon.
2. Marvel at the crystal clear fresh blue water.
3. Relax at one of the many beach bars.
4. Visit Flip Flop Bar for their world famous steak pregos.

World famous sunsets here in Bilene. We found our very own hidden sunset viewing point. A solitary sand bar on the shores of Lagoa Uembje. What a way to conclude this leg of our Mozambique trip.

VILANCULOS & Bazaruto & Goodbye Bianca - Lost in Mozam S2 Ep3 (4K)

In this weeks episode, we keep traveling up the coast line of Mozambique, and go to the incredible tropical location of Vilanculos. Here we spend a couple of nights camping, then stay in a beautiful luxury resort, go exploring the World Heritage Sight of Bazaruto, and go horse riding on the beach with Mozambique Horse Safari's.

The episode ends with some really sad news, that may go some way to explaining the silence on the channel over the last year. It has been incredibly hard for me to edit and finish this series, but I am so glad that I have. The 23 months that we spent on the road together will always be one of the most beautiful chapters of my life.

I will be taking a week off from posting next week, but then will be back with my solo Mozambique adventure the following Saturday at 1pm.

Please let me know what you think, and I really hope you enjoy the episode!

Chongoene Holiday Resort, Xai-Xai, Mozambique

We found this 4 bedroom beachfront house on Airbnb for only 680ZAR/2380MZN/37USD per night for up to 8 people! Here's the link:

1. Uninterrupted ocean views
2. 70m from Chongoene Beach
3. 4 bedrooms (sleeps up to 8)
4. Fully equipped kitchen
5. 2x braai/barbeque areas
6. Outdoor pizza oven
7. 3x outdoors seating areas
8. 1x indoor bathroom
9. Outdoor shower
10. Dining area
11. Lounge leading out to deck with ocean views
12. Fully serviced daily

Yes, you read correctly. An entire beachfront property for this amazing price per night (for two people) for up to 8 people! Can you get better value?

Praia De Chongoene, Xai-Xai, Mozambique

Welcome to yet another pristine beach in Mozambique! This is Praia De Chongoene. An immaculate stretch of coastline in Xai-Xai with prominent rock formations forming a natural barrier to the waves.

Here locals can be observed foraging for black mussels & an incredible underwater splurge of colour has formed in and around the rocks. The natural tidal pools are warm, crystal clear & blue!

Chongoene Hotel Ruins, Xai-Xai, Mozambique

Surrounded by pristine untouched coastline, we were amazed to find out that further along the beach is the Chongoene Hotel Ruins.

Very little is known and has been documented about this hotel. It was reputed to be one of the largest luxury hotels in Africa at the time (1960s) evident by its sheer prominence even in its current state. It was suddenly vacated following Mozambique's liberation from Portuguese rule.

From what we could see, it has an Olympic size pool, a massive dining hall and ball rooms, over 110units and sits on apparently 12000 ha of land

It has an eery atmosphere. The attention to detail was incredible with some of the decorative tiles still in tact to this day. A unique & very different experience for us.

Xai-Xai, Mozambique

How about a guided walking tour around the city of Xai-Xai, the capital city of the Gaza Province in Mozambique?

We met a warm local, Sergio, who took us on a guide walking tour of Xai-Xai. Being the capital of the Gaza Province, the presence of Government buildings immediately caught our attention.

Alongside the banks of the Limpopo River, the buildings have Portuguese influence. A walking tour is highly recommended instead of simply driving or passing through the city of Xai-Xai.

Wenela Tidal Pool, Xai-Xai, Mozambique

Wenela Tidal Pool is a short two kilometre walk south of the main beach in Xai-Xai. A natural tunnel and blowhole links the tidal pool to the sea as sea caves form landward annd upward. What an incredible natural wonder to marvel at!

We stayed here:

Hello, Tofo! We find ourselves in the Inhambane Province of Mozambique.

No seashell will be left unturned during our stay. Join us in this series as we show you around this incredible coastal town!

What a beaut! Praia do Tofo (Tofo Beach) is absolutely pristine. Tofo is situated 500km north of Maputo in southeastern Mozambique and about 23km from Inhambane City.
Tofo's international draw card is its blend of culture, nightlife & sealife!

The Tofo experience would not be complete without extensively supporting the local food market on a daily basis. This part of Tofo is seldom ever publicised.

Fresh produce, fish & local delicacies are available here in abundance. Not only does this allow us to immerse ourselves in the local way of life but also sustain our own healthy way of life.

Tofo is well-known for its large curved beach. It's extensive white sandy shores make it an ideal beach to relax.

Beautiful beachfront accommodation and the main market border this stunning beach.

Crystal clear & unbelievable warm gentle waters is what makes Tofo Beach one of the best swimming beaches we have ever seen.

During this time of the year, water temperatures average 26°C. Apparently in February water temperatures rise beyond 27°C. We will however settle for the 26°C waters this time with outside temperatures having a real feel of 38°C.

A Mozambique trip would not be complete without seafood. We gorged on a different type of fish almost every single day. Sourcing our fish from the fishermen at the market made this possible.

When lazing on the beach, we would notice colourful wooden fishing boats being pulled in by local fishermen after which some sort of fish trading would take place. Back at our accommodation, we would hear a gentleman on a loud hailer on the back of a truck advertising his catches of the day in a cooler box.

1.5km south of Tofo Beach is Tofinho Beach. Tofinho is a residential area and Tofinho Beach is a short stroll from the main beach around or over the sand dune.

It's less of a swimming beach but just as scenic. It's worth a walk to take in the full stretch of coastline.

The sun has now set on our Tofo trip! At sunset, Tofo Beach is lit up in the most beautiful golden brown hue!

We took time to appreciate the little piece of paradise we have been lucky to experience and thank the incredible people of Tofo for welcoming us with open arms.

It should give you a good overview of the things to do, where to stay, where to eat, how to get around and what to take care of. Enjoy!

Travel Vlog: Xai Xai (Ocean Star and Cafe Pescador) ????????| Mozambique Road Trip Series Ep 7

Xai Xai was a treat. We only scratched it's surface as Xai Xai is much bigger than we thought. Buzzling town with the cleanest beaches. Amazing seafood with a beautiful view. A lot of cashew and coconut trees. The tar road back had quite a lot of potholes, so drive cautiously. The gravel (scenic) route was damaged badly due to a lot of rain, but loved driving past small villages. Visit Xai Xai and give us your feedback.

Dhow in Paradise — EP. 8 of THE 'MINI' AFRICA DIARIES

ᴀʙᴏᴜᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ᴇᴘɪsᴏᴅᴇ:

The drive to Vilanculos (or Vilankulo) from Tofo felt like a breeze compared to our previous Mozambique road adventures. Along the way, @zandrover and I even had enough time to stop in a local town and do a little market shopping and watch the community’s annual Palm Sunday procession, which was pretty amazing to witness (picture miles of people walking in a single file line while holding up flowing palm leaves and singing in harmony).

When we eventually made it to our new temporary beachside digs (where we planned to stay for a short week in order to get some work done and sleep in a proper bed) we even had enough time to properly catch the sunset, which was a very pleasant change from what was becoming our (very bad) habit of driving at night — something everyone had advised us against when we set off on this adventure.

While we knew our time here was just a ‘working stopover’ before heading back to the bush, there was no way we couldn’t take at least one day to explore the nearby islands. So the following morning we set off with the awesome crew from Casa Chibububo on a traditional dhow boat named Lisa.

(For the record, we seriously considered extending as soon as we drove up and saw the place it was that amazing — even more tempting was the fact that we’d probably never get to stay in a 3-bedroom beachside bungalow like this and pay just $45/night anywhere else).

To make the most of our ‘off day’, the plan was to sail around the Bazaruto Archipelago — a collection of 6 stunning islands: Bazaruto (the biggest), Benguerra, Banque, Magaruque, Santa Carolina, and Shell whose waters are part of a national park that is home to a ton of marine life, including East Africa’s last viable population of dugongs — and then eventually dock on Magaruque Island, which we were told we might find completely empty if we were lucky.

While we didn’t spot any dugongs during our dhow adventure, as you’ll see in this episode, we still got pretty darn lucky.

For more on our dhow day in paradise, feel free to check out this blog post I wrote:

Africa's Paradise | Traveling South Africa & Mozambique

EP. 120
Prior to all the Quarantine and Lock downs that have taken place in South Africa & most of the world, we were able to head up to Mozambique and go visit Ricky's family. We got to explore the markets in Maputo and take a trip to Ponta do Ouro to go diving and spends some quality time together. We headed back to Cape Town and had more family time as my mom & brothers as well as Ricky's dad came through for a quick lil visit. We went for a relaxing breakfast sail & explored Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and Hout Bay.

See ya next week!!
