The Chapel of the Ascension is a shrine located on the Mount of Olives, in the At-Tur district of Jerusalem. Part of a larger complex consisting first of a Christian church and monastery, then an Islamic mosque, it is located on a site the faithful traditionally believed to be the earthly spot where Jesus ascended into Heaven after His Resurrection. It houses a slab of stone believed to contain one of His footprints. The Status Quo, a 250-year-old understanding between religious communities, applies to the site.
Origin and traditions
Shortly after the death and resurrection of Jesus, early Christians began gathering in secret to commemorate His Ascension at a small cave on the Mount of Olives. The issuance of the Edict of Milan by the Roman Emperor Constantine I in 313 made it possible for Christians to worship overtly without fear of government persecution. By the time of the pilgrim Egeria's travels to Jerusalem in 384, the spot of veneration had been moved to the present location, uphill from the cave,[3] which had been integrated into the Constantinian Church of Eleona, dedicated by then just to Jesus' teachings about good and evil (Matthew 24:1-26:2). Egeria witnessed the celebration of the Ascension at an open hillock near the cave. The first church was erected there a few years later, sometime before 392, by a lady from the imperial family, Poimenia. Later a legend attributed the church to Saint Helena, mother of Constantine I.

4th-century church
The first complex constructed on the site of the present chapel was known as Imbomon (Greek for on the hill). It was a rotunda, open to the sky, surrounded by circular porticoes and arches. Sometime between AD 384-390, Poimenia, a wealthy and pious Roman aristocratic woman of the imperial family financed the building of a Byzantine-style church around Christ's last footprints.

7th-century church
It was subsequently rebuilt in the late 7th century. The Frankish bishop and pilgrim Arculf, in relating his pilgrimage to Jerusalem in about the year 680, described this church as a round building open to the sky, with three porticoes entered from the south. Eight lamps shone brightly at night through windows facing Jerusalem. Inside was a central edicule containing the footprints of Christ, plainly and clearly impressed in the dust, inside a railing.

12th-century church
The reconstructed church was eventually destroyed and rebuilt a second time by the Crusaders in the 12th-century. This final church was eventually destroyed by the armies of Salah ad-Din, leaving only a partially intact outer 12x12 meter octagonal wall surrounding an inner 3x3 meter shrine, also octagonal, called a martyrium or edicule. This structure still stands today,[7] in a form partially altered in the time after Saladin's 1187 conquest of Jerusalem.

Edicule (chapel)
The main structure of the chapel is from the Crusader era; the stone dome and the octagonal drum it stands on are Muslim additions. The exterior walls are decorated with arches and marble columns. The entrance is from the west, the interior of the chapel consists of a mihrab indicating the direction of Mecca in the south wall. On the floor, inside a stone frame, is a slab of stone called the Ascension Rock.

Ascension rock
The octagonal ædicule surrounds the Ascension rock, said to contain the right footprint of Christ, the section bearing the left footprint having been taken to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in the Middle Ages. The faithful believe that the impression was made as Jesus ascended into Heaven and is venerated as the last point on earth touched by the incarnate Christ.

Over a year in the making “Following the Messiah” (from producers Craig Dehut and Stuart Peck along with cinematographer Jet Kaiser) is a visually stunning journey that tells the story of Jesus Christ as told through the Bible and its lands.

* During the scene in the wilderness, we recognize that there is a slip of the tongue where our host unintentionally says that Satan “led Jesus in the wilderness” rather than “met Jesus in the wilderness”. God’s word is infallible, but we humbly admit that we are not. As much as we strive to the utmost to present the Bible accurately, you should always defer to God's inspired scriptures above all else!

Location
1. Capernaum is located on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee.
2. Capernaum was located on the Via Maris, which was the main international highway of the known world during the time of Christ.
3. Today, Capernaum is shared between two sites. The Franciscan site receives around 90% of visitors as it has the synagogue, Peter’s home, village ruins, ancient artifacts, and access to the beach. The Greek Orthodox site has chosen to remain unexcavated and serene.

Historical Background
1. The name Capernaum is derived from two words, Caper, which means village, and Naum, which means rest, and is also from the title, Nahum. Therefore, some believe that the town was named after the Prophet Nahum, and some believe it was simply a place of rest.
2. Capernaum was a fishing village with a population of around 1,000 during the time of Christ. It encompassed what is today both the Franciscan and Greek Orthodox sites.
3. Capernaum became the hometown of Jesus after He moved from his boyhood home of Nazareth. It also became the ministry base of Christ during His ministry on earth (Matthew 4:13–17).
4. Capernaum is mentioned more than any other town around the Sea of Galilee.
5. Capernaum was also the home of Peter, James, Andrew, John, and Matthew.
6. The Synagogue in Capernaum was built by a Roman Centurion of whom Jesus healed his servant.
7. The synagogue that existed during Christ’s time is made from black basalt stone, and its foundations are under the current synagogue, built out of limestone.
8. The current synagogue was built in the 4th century and was quite luxurious and impressive.
9. The home of the Apostle Peter has been identified and now has a large modern church built over it. The location of Peter’s home is certain and has been verified by many substantial archaeological excavations.
10. Greek Orthodox site of Capernaum. This church was built in 1931 and dedicated to the twelve apostles.

2. Village Houses
3. The Synagogue
4. Ancient Artifacts
5. Capernaum Greek Orthodox Site
6. Capernaum National Park

Capernaum in the Bible
1. Christ left Nazareth to live and set up His ministry base in Capernaum (Matthew 4:13-16).
2. Jesus frequently taught in the Synagogue in Capernaum (Mark 1:21–28).
3. Jesus healed Peter’s mother and many others here in Capernaum (Mark 1:29–34).
4. In Capernaum, Jesus forgave and healed a paralyzed man. This likely happened right at the home where Jesus lived (Mark 2:1–5).
5. Christ marveled at the great faith of a centurion in Capernaum (Luke 7:1–10).
6. The Parables of the Kingdom were preached close to Capernaum (Matthew 13:1–3).
7. The miracle of Peter getting money out of the mouth of a fish to pay the temple tax for himself and Jesus happened in Capernaum (Matthew 17:24-27).
8. Jesus called Matthew, the tax collector, close to Capernaum (Matthew 9:9).
9. Capernaum was one of the three towns Christ cursed because of their unbelief in Him (Matthew 11:23–24).

Faith Lesson from Capernaum
1. Christ astonished the large crowds who followed him because He taught with authority. He was completely different from all other teachers because He was God in the flesh. Are we astonished today as we read Christ’s teachings in His Word?
2. Christ healed multitudes of people in and around Capernaum. He also showed He was God as He forgave their sins. Forgiving sins is something only God can do. Do we believe Christ was God in the flesh and full deity?
3. Christ marveled at the great faith of a Roman Centurion. Do we trust God in such a way that He would marvel at our faith?
4. Unfortunately, Christ cursed the town of Capernaum because of their unbelief in Him. After all they had seen, and after many of them had been healed by Jesus, they still were filled with unbelief. Unbelief is, therefore, a sin. Do we have unbelief in Christ and who He claimed to be? Do we also have unbelief in trusting Him in our daily lives when things don’t seem to make sense?

Via Dolorosa is not a street but a route. After eating with his disciples at The Last Supper, Jesus went to Gethsemane. He was caught and surrendered to the Romans who sentenced him to die by crucifixion. The route Jesus took from the place of his judgment to the site of his crucifixion on Mount Calvary is sacred in Christianity. This final and fateful route is the Via Dolorosa.

Fourteen stations along this path signify events mentioned in the New Testament and Christian tradition, and different Christian denominations emphasize certain traditions and stations over others. For most pilgrims, the exact location of the events is of little importance compared to the deep meaning the route holds and its proximity to the original events. Pilgrims stop at each of the 14 Stations of the Cross for prayer and reflection.

The current route of the Via Dolorosa was established in the 18th century based on the events of Jesus’ crucifixion in the 1st century CE, but the significance for believers crosses the boundaries of time and space.

WALKING THE VIA DOLOROSA
Station 1: Jesus’ condemnation by Pontius Pilate, believed to have occurred at the site of Madrasa al-Omariya, 300m west of the Lion’s Gate. Today the madrasa is a school and can be entered with the permission of the caretaker at specific times (Mon-Thu and Sat 14:30-18:00; Fri 14:30-16:00).
Station 2: Where Jesus was handed his cross, located next to the Franciscan Monastery of the Flagellation. The Chapel of Condemnation marks the site where Jesus was sentenced to death; the Chapel of the Flagellation is where he was beaten by Roman soldiers.
Station 3: Where Jesus fell for the first time under the weight of his cross.
Station 4: Where Mary watched her son pass by carrying the cross, marked by the Armenian Church of Our Lady of the Spasm. Inside the church is a remarkable 5th-century mosaic floor that includes an eery pair of sandals, said to be laid upon Mary’s footprints.
Station 5: The place where Roman soldiers forced Simon of Cyrene to help Jesus carry his cross.
Station 6: The spot where, according to a tradition, St. Veronica wiped Jesus’ face with a cloth that left an image of Jesus’ face forever imprinted on the cloth. The relic, known as the Sudarium Veronica, is at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
Station 6: The Church of the Holy Face, which is attended by the Little Sisters, a Greek Catholic sect.
Station 7: Where Jesus fell for the second time. This is marked by a Franciscan chapel.
Station 8: A cross and the Greek inscription “NIKA” on the wall of the Greek Orthodox Monastery of St. Charalambos mark the place where Jesus consoled the weeping and mourning women of Jerusalem.
Station 9: The Coptic Patriarchate next to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Here, a Roman pillar marks the site of Jesus’ third and final fall.

Inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre:
Station 10: Jesus is stripped. Top of the stairs to the right outside the entrance.
Station 11: Jesus is nailed to the cross -upstairs just inside the entrance, at the Latin Calvary.
Station 12: Jesus died on the cross – Rock of Golgotha in the Greek Orthodox Calvary.
Station 13: Jesus is taken down from the cross – Statue of Our Lady of Sorrows next to the Latin Calvary.
Station 14: Jesus is laid to rest in the tomb – inside the altar on the main fl

BOOKS ABOUT ISRAEL BY TODD FINK:

Israel . . . Land of the Bible . . . Land of Faith . . . the Holy Land, revered throughout recorded history as the cradle of monotheistic religion. For a person of faith whose beliefs are rooted in the Bible, there is no place on earth like the Holy Land. In this narrow strip of land lies the source of religious belief of much of mankind. Here, amongst the barren hills and fertile plains, man’s spirit learned to soar and from here a new message went out to all the world: “. . . and many peoples shall come, and say, “Come, let us go up to the Mountain of the Lord, to the House of the God of Jacob; that He may teach us His ways and that we may walk in His paths. For out of Zion (Hill next to Jerusalem) will go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem (Isaiah 2:3,4).
The unique factor about the Holy Land is its special location in the World. Situated as it is, straddling the divide between Africa and Asia, the area has almost always been a battleground. Wave after wave of conquerors poured into it, anxious to control the strategic trade routes linking the centers of the ancient world. It’s not by accident that it’s virtually in the center of the world. In God’s master plan of creation, He decided to place Israel exactly in the center of His creation. Located on a tiny land bridge between Africa and Asia, there is no other way to get between the two of them except through Israel. It’s located on the crossroads of the world. Whoever wanted to trade between the two continents, or control the known world, had to conquer and control Israel. For this reason, there have been more wars and events that have taken place in Israel than any other country on earth. God positioned Israel in its unique location in order to influence the world and be on “Center Stage” so all of creation would know that He alone is God.
For nearly 2,000 years, Christian visitors from all over the world have come to the Holy Land, the land of their spiritual heritage. With Bible in hand, they have walked the places Jesus walked and prayed in the places He preached and prayed. For Christians, Israel is a place like no other. It provides them a one of a kind opportunity to experience the land of the Bible, to deepen their faith, and to be spiritually transformed for a lifetime.

Walking from Capernaum to Chorazin: In the Footsteps of Jesus

Garden Tomb visitors the Garden Tomb is a site of Christian worship and witness located in the heart of historic Jerusalem, just outside the Old City walls. Within this peaceful and contemplative garden there are several antiquities of interest, including an ancient Jewish tomb which many believe is the site of Jesus of Nazareth’s burial and resurrection.

In order to preserve and maintain this special site, the grounds of the garden were purchased in 1894 by The Garden Tomb (Jerusalem) Association, a Charitable Trust based in the United Kingdom. The association is comprised of people from many different denominational and national backgrounds, united by the glorious message of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The site is maintained by volunteers that come from around the globe and join a team of local Palestinians and Israelis.

Skull Hill
According to the scriptures, Jesus was crucified in a place named “the Skull” (Golgotha in Aramaic). In the mid-19th century, several Christian scholars suggested that the rocky escarpment, which can be viewed from the garden, marked the place of the Messiah’s crucifixion.

They noted its proximity to a main city gate, its association with executions according to local tradition, and its physical resemblance to a skull.

In the gospels we read that “at the place where Jesus was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no-one had ever been laid” (John 19:41). Archeological evidence, including an ancient winepress, suggests that this place was an agricultural garden in those days, and inside the garden an ancient Jewish tomb has been found, perhaps the empty tomb of Jesus.

guided-tours-garden-tombFor over 120 years, the Garden Tomb has shared the story of the Messiah’s crucifixion and resurrection with countless visitors from across the globe. Some believe that this garden is the setting of those gospel events.

However, the question as to whether this is the same tomb in which the Messiah was buried is ultimately unimportant. What is important is that visitors to this garden have an encounter with the living Messiah today. This is our prayer and ministry.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.

Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.

In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)

Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church.

This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.
