Disneyland Park History - Rare Time Lapse Construction Footage

Building Walt's Dream: Disneyland Under Construction presents recently unearthed time-lapse photography of Disneyland's construction, arranged by land. Providing audio for the footage are Imagineer Tony Baxter, Disney archivist Ed Hobelman, and Walter Magnuson, who are familiar enough with the content to supply real insight in territory that's expectedly more narrative than a typical audio commentary.

Tony explains in the narration the footage, believe it or not, was found in a can inside a Pennsylvania salt mine. Yeah. It was a film canister with the word “Disneyland” scribbled on the front, and someone found it and returned it to Disney.

The material is presented in three parts: first, an opening section where we see Walt Disney walking the property. Second, is the time-lapse footage, one segment for each land. And finally, there is some video of Walt, Harper Goff, and the company overseeing the Jungle Cruise construction. Walt was famous for preserving his and his team’s thought processes (he hired stenographers to take detailed notes in every story meeting during the creation of the animated movies and save as many original sketches in the archives as he could). Here he realized that the construction of Disneyland would one day be something to study and reference. So, he set up numerous cameras and observation towers around the property to film the construction footage in time-lapse as it was happening. We see an American historical landmark in all stages of construction.

Giants Of The Sea: Ships & Men Who Changed The World - By John D. McCown - April 26, 2021

GIANTS OF THE SEA: SHIPS & MEN WHO CHANGED THE WORLD

Industry veteran & author of Giants Of The Sea: Ships & Men Who Changed The World John D. McCown will discuss his recent book on Monday, April 26 at 2PM Eastern Time. Thirty minute presentation followed by 15 minute Q&A

“Giants Of The Sea: Ships & Men Who Changed The World” covers the history and development of the modern cargo shipping industry in 330 pages spread across 30 discrete chapters.

The history of cargo shipping going back to the Egyptians moving obelisks by barge on the Nile is covered, but the focus is on the post-war revolution in shipping cost efficiency through specialization and geometric increases in vessel size. With detailed information on what comprises each major shipping segment today, it also includes chapters on the nine men whose fingerprints are still all over the industry. Three Americans, two Danes, two Greeks and two Chinese.

The modern worldwide cargo shipping industry stands on the shoulders of these giants. The author, who worked on a daily basis for twenty years with Malcom McLean, the inventor of container shipping, demonstrates the direct link between the efficiency of the shipping industry and the explosion in world trade it has enabled.

The book outlines how today’s shipping industry touches almost everyone on the planet in ways that they may not even be aware.

In addition to highlighting the industry’s contribution to the global economy, the book makes the case that it has been a prime catalyst in reducing poverty and even increasing peace around the world.

Floating Paradise Lost: SS BRITANIS, Part One (From MONTEREY to MATSONIA to LURLINE to BRITANIS)

Using vintage brochures, illustrations, deck plans and photographs, this is the story of Chandris Lines venerable SS BRITANIS, which began her career in 1932 as Matson Lines SS MONTEREY on service from the West Coast to Australia. The MONTEREY served as a troopship in World War Two, then remerged in 1956 as the completely rebuilt MATSONIA for Matson's Hawaii service. In 1963, she was renamed LURLINE and in 1970, she was sold to Chandris who rebuilt her for their Australian emigrant service. In 1981 at nearly 50 years old, she is also shown during a Caribbean cruise from San Juan prior to her planned retirement, which actually did not happen for another thirteen years. If you haven't already, don't forget to hit like and subscribe to this channel so we can keep making ship videos. To The Edge of the World: The Story of the Trans-Siberian Railway

This expert lecture, presented by railway historian and author Christian Wolmar, retells the incredible story of the Trans-Siberian Railway, a remarkable feat of engineering, stimulated by imperial ambition and also a key part of Russian and, indeed, wider European and Asian history. The construction of a railway line results in all kinds of changes, expected and unexpected. In Siberia's case, the results have been extremes of both positive and negative, and while mistakes were undoubtedly made, this should not take away from what is a magnificent achievement.

You can purchase a copy of Christian's book, To The Edge of the World, in most major bookstores, including Amazon, following the links below;
