Toledo Spain ???????? A Must See Town and Perfect Day Trip From Madrid | 197 Countries, 3 Kids

Join us for a tour of Toledo one of the most visited places in all of Spain!

We were completely amazed. Walking through the streets of this city made us feel that we had gone back to the Middle Ages when Toledo was the capital of Spain. It was one of the most important centres in Europe from the Gothic epoch until 1560 and its buildings stand tall to witness this period in time.

The architecture is really impressive with the main sights being the large fortress (alcázar) built by the monarchs, the vast and richly decorated cathedral, and the impressive archdiocesan palace built by the prelates of Toledo, primates of the Spanish church.

However, apart from the stunning infrastructure we also realized that there are so many souvenir shops in the city that also express the culture and identity of Toledo. They are filled with beautiful handmade products.

The city is surrounded by the River Tajo on three sides and two medieval walls on the fourth side.

Enjoy the video and let us know where you are watching from.

Toledo Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Toledo in Spain.
Toledo is one of the oldest and proudest cities in Spain and during Roman times a large settlement was established there. Later, the Visi Goths recognized the strategic value of this city on the Rio Tajo and it became the capital of their empire. Elevated on a mighty rock foundation the Toledo's unique location served a useful purpose for its eventual defense as the city was the scene of many a bloody battle. In 712 A.D. the capital of the Visi Goths was violently integrated with the Muslim Empire of Al-Andalus. Throughout the centuries Toledo has been regarded as a cultural centre of medieval Spain and was known as a 'City of Three Cultures' as it was here that Arabs, Jews and Christians lived together in peace until the time when the catholic church grew intolerant of other religions. In 1229, construction work on the monumental Toledo Cathedral began and in 1493 the Gothic masterpiece was completed. The proportions of this enormous cathedral make it one of the most spectacular in Spain. The mighty fortress of Alcazar is a world apart from the cathedral and served as the model for the later building of El Escorial. Since its construction in the 16th century, the city's landmark was rebuilt and restored following numerous wars and hostilities. The massive Bisagra Gate embodies yet another symbol of the fusion between Arabic Moorish and Spanish Castilian architecture. Swathed in colourful and dramatic history Toledo enjoys a unique place among all of Spain's old and fascinating cities.

25 Things to do in Madrid, Spain | Top Attractions Travel Guide Travel Video Transcript:

Hola y bienvenidos a Madrid. This week we are in the Spanish capital and we are going to show you twenty five of the best things to do in the city.

Final thoughts on your time in Madrid. Well, I really enjoyed the city. And I really found that it is super walk-able. We were here for 10 days and we hardly had to take the metro at all. We just took the bus once when we were visiting the stadium but the rest of the time we were able to walk wherever we needed to go. And also I think it is a great city for art lovers. There are so many galleries and museums to check out. And a lot of them are free in the evening. So keep that in mind.

And now it is your turn. What did you think of Madrid? You know what? I absolutely loved Madrid. It is a city that just really clicked with me. We have a lot of friends that are living here long term and prior to coming here I had no idea like why would someone want to come to Madrid? Now I totally get it. I love the culture, I love the food, I love the nightlife. Everything is really cheap. I go to the grocery store and I can get a one liter thing of wine for just over a Euro. It is just a really affordable fun city to be in. And it is somewhere I hope I have a chance to come back to again soon.

And that is a wrap of our time in Madrid! We had a splendid time and were truly sad to say goodbye to the city, but that just means we'll have to come back again. If you have any travel tips for Madrid, feel free to share those in the comments below.

This is part of our Travel in Spain series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Spanish culture, Spanish arts, Spanish foods, Spanish religion, Spanish cuisine and Spanish people.

Our 1 Year Anniversary in Paris

It is hard to believe one year ago we were saying our vows and eating Asado in the backyard of Audrey's parents house. Time sure does fly and to say life was a little hectic during our first year of marriage would be an understatement.

Shortly after tying the not we took a trip to Quebec City, visited Fredericton, Honeymooned in Cuba, went back to school to complete a degree in Education in Kingston, took a weekend trip to Las Vegas, celebrated Carnaval in Quebec, completed a teaching practicum in Lima, explored South Africa for a month, revisited Germany, hopped over to Luxembourg and just made it in time to Paris to celebrate our first 365 days together as husband and wife. Whew! I'm dizzy just rattling that off.

To celebrate our one year together we spent a slow day exploring some sites in Paris, eating bibimbap at a Korean restaurant, having a sushi picnic dinner in our hotel room and dancing at night along the Seine river. To be honest I don't think we could have planned a better day. I'm hoping our next year of marriage will include more travel and less studying ;)

Our 1 Year Anniversary in Paris Travel Video Transcript:

So hello from Paris! Today is actually our one year anniversary as Mr and Mrs. So we are here celebrating in the city and we thought we'd make a little vlog because why not document the celebration right? Exactly.

So it has kind of been a wild first year of marriage. We went back to Canada to go to school, to get a degree and now we're back traveling again. So I wonder what year two is going to bring for us.

So right now we're looking for a restaurant called Bbimbap because we thought what better way to celebrate than eating at a Korean restaurant since Sam and I met in Korea and we love Korean food. So I've got my little map, my app and it looks like we're close. And I'm so hungry so let's keep going.

Bop bop diddy bop. Bibimbap.

Alright, so our side dishes have arrived. We have some greens and some cucumbers and some peanuts. And here this is something I've never seen before. And it looks like a refreshing cucumber salad and it is floating in water with ice and sesame seeds. Yum!

Let's try that.

Yeah, very refreshing. Perfect on a hot summer day. Perfect. Exactly.

Your food is here. My absolute favorite Korean meal has arrived. Bibimbap. And it is special kind of Bibimbap. It is called Jae Yuk Bibimbap which is a spicy kind of pork with Gochujang. Red pepper paste so take a look at this I've actually gone through and stirred it completely. It looks amazing. Time for my first bite.

Amazing authentic delicious bibimbap found in Paris, France.

So hotel room picnic. It has been raining most of the afternoon and a lot of things have shutdown in the neighborhood just because there is a holiday coming up. So we didn't have a lot of dinner options. So Sam managed to find a place hat was open and selling sushi.

I had to walk ten blocks for this. Like seriously five grocery stores were closed. Yeah, so this is going to be our dinner. Just a hotel picnic and maybe a nice little dessert. So yeah, happy anniversary!

Fun dinner.

So how are you enjoying your sushi picnic. You know what, this actually turned out to be a bit of a blessing in disguise. This is a lot better of a meal than what we were going to get from the grocery store.

What would a meal in France be like without a little sweet treat dessert at the end?

Come to Audrey. I will eat you. Oh, that smells so good. I can't wait to eat that. So that is the first one. But there is more. Because I like sweets and I'm getting spoiled today. And Sam does too actually.

So we're heading out for a bit of an evening adventure. Apparently there is dancing happening along the banks of the Seine. So we're going to see if we can find that.

So we're just wrapping things up. We've been watching some of the dancing and just enjoying walking along the banks of the Seine. And I think we're going to call it a day and head back to the hotel and we'll see you guys soon. Happy one year anniversary!

Visiting Toledo, Spain on Audrey's Birthday

For Audrey's birthday we took a day trip from Madrid to Toledo where we visited the Alcázar de Toledo and ate a three course Spanish lunch.

Visiting Toledo, Spain on Audrey's Birthday Travel Video Transcript:

Well Hello,

So today is July 23rd. Which means it is my birthday! So Sam and I are going to take a little day trip. We've been staying in Madrid but Toledo is only thirty minutes away by train. So we're going to head out and have some birthday adventures in a new city.

We've arrived and it is a beautiful train station. Time to get the birthday girl some lunch. Yes.

So we decided to walk into the city which was maybe a mistake considering it is almost forty degrees out. We should have just grabbed a taxi but at least they have these escalators that help you reach the summit of the center of the old town I guess. So yeah, it is nice being in the shade and not having to climb stairs.

It is kind of funny because just outside of the escalators are these old ruins. So you have something very modern and then you have the ruins right beside it. Yeah, quite the contrast.

So we made it to the top. And this is our reward. Check out these views.

Birthday girl, what is your starter? Alright, so we found a nice little restaurant and I've ordered Gazpacho which is a cold tomato soup with onions, peppers and cucumbers. But you can't see any of that because it looks like they've just liquefied it and turned it into a bit of a cream. But let's try it.

Mmmmm.

Refreshing? That is so refreshing on a day like today. And it is a little bit tart and tangy which I really like.

I could drink this out of a glass it is so good.

And what is your entree? I'm trying something I've never tried before. It is called Migas de Pastor. And if you look down here it has got meat, it has got some kind of breadcrumbs here and it also has veggies. I think these maybe peppers. Let's take a bite with the meat and the breadcrumbs. How is it? It's really good. I think that is a piece of like chorizo meat. Nice! Spicy!

And what does the birthday gal have?

So I'm having a type of Tortilla which is basically potatoes and egg. Kind of like an omelette style meal. This also has ham in it. And I've got some pork right underneath. They've soaked it in ketchup which I'm not a huge fan of. But it is alright. I actually had this for breakfast today and that was a little bit better.

So I see your main dish has arrived. You know what, this is actually my favorite Spanish dish that I've tried since I've been to Spain. It is called Paella. Take a look down here. We're going to be doing a bit more of a dedicated video to this soon but for now you can basically know that it is a mixed type of rice with seafood and vegetables. Alright, let's take a bite of that.

And over here in Spain wine is like water. I had a choice between water and wine so I got my own bottle. I think I made the right decision.

Aren't you glad we got about a thirty minute break in between our main course and dessert? What do you have? I am having flan. And I don't really know how to describe this dessert except to say that it is popular in South America and in Spain. And your Mom makes a really good flan. Yes, and the brown stuff you see it is kind of like caramelized sugar but I really can't explain the dessert itself because I have no idea what it is made with even though I've eaten it my whole life.

So we are now visiting the Alcázar, which is the one building that dominates the city skyline. And they also have a really cool military museum. And normally I wouldn't be into that but because it is so hot outside it has actually been really nice being indoors with AC. Just learning a bit of the history by force.

I'm beginning to realize that Spain is more of a winter destination. All we've been doing since we've come here is sweating like pigs.

So we are hiding indoors again. We found a little corner store with lots of fans and Popsicles. So trying to cool down here people.

So I think that is about all we can handle for today. So cooling off yet again with ice cream cones this time. And now we're going to head back to the train station and try to get back to Madrid a little bit earlier than planned.

Toledo, Spain

Toledo is a short train ride from Madrid and if you have a day to spare we highly recommend it. There's not a ton of stuff to see but it'll get you out of the busy streets of Madrid to a city more reminiscent of the 'old' Spain. We took a cheesy train ride around the city, visited the cathedral and the El Greco Museum which was FREE. We walked the streets, too much, and ate a yummy lunch with wine, too much, and generally just had a fabulous day. Happy Travels! Sandra:)

Our NEW Spanish YouTube Travel Channel!!! (Guía de Viajes con Samuel y Audrey)

Hey guys! We have a NEW Spanish YouTube Channel:

For a while now we've been wanting to create a Spanish YouTube travel channel but we kept putting it off. Well, now it is live and official. For the time being we'll mostly be doing city guides until I (Sam) improve my Spanish. Fortunately, Audrey speaks Spanish and she'll be leading the way as I learn by studying a little bit every night. It'll be a lot of fun and excited about it.

Our NEW Spanish YouTube Travel Channel!!! (Guía de Viajes con Samuel y Audrey) video transcript:

Hola Amigos! Bienvenidos! Me llama Samuel.

You want to tell us why you're speaking in Spanish?

We have a bit of an exciting announcement. We are starting a new little side project. A Spanish YouTube channel.

I know it is nothing super exciting like moving to a new country or anything like that but yeah we've kind of been toying with this idea for a while because when we went traveling in South America was it two years ago?

We got a whole bunch of subscribers from South America who are asking us for Spanish content. Yep. And also my parents have been asking us for Spanish content.

Your parents have been asking and for those of you who don't know you do speak Spanish. Hello, I do speak Spanish so that is why it kind of makes sense and I mean Sam also wants to learn Spanish so we figured this would be a fun little challenge for you. Also a good way for me to practice my language exactly because I don't get to use Spanish very often.

I've memorized some food so for the time being we're going to focus mostly on city guides.

You're going to be doing a lot of the presenting. I will be kind of be limited to one line zingers.

And I'm going to start I'm going to start today. I'm going to start tonight so I'm going to learn some new words. You have a wonderful little teacher over here. Haha. I do have a teacher.

That is true. And we practice. But anyways yeah I mean if any of you don't know this already you were born in Canada but your parents are both from South America. Your Dad is from Argentina. Your Mom is from Peru.

So you grew up like uh your first when you were really young you learned Spanish before English. I did and I also lived in South America when I was little. I lived in Argentina for 6 years.

I think this is going to be a fun project. We're going to start off with city guides. Yeah. And as my Spanish improves hopefully at some point we'll do a food review. We'll get you more involved.

It would be so cool when I can actually like chip in with full sentences and have like complete coherent thoughts. Yeah. But that is going to take a while and uh yeah I mean it is up to me how much I study. Yeah. And hopefully I can improve.

And if any of you have any like language learning tips because I know a lot of people speak more than one language. For learning a second language what is what do you think are the best tips.

Yeah, so going back to the channel it is actually already up and a few of you have already found us. We haven't really been promoting it but people have found the channel.

Well, we haven't talked about it on camera but we've been putting it on our end screens on our videos and I've been having little pop-ups as well. Okay.

So anyways, yeah if you want to subscribe or check it out. We're going to be linking wherever we can. Is it corners. It will be in the corners you'll notice something popping up. It will be in the end screen and I'm also going to put it in the description box. Go check it out. As well. Yeah.

So yeah, if you're interested in that please go check out the channel and give us some feedback and uh yeah this is just a very exciting new project and we wanted to let you guys know about it.

So and can we say goodbye in Spanish. Ciao.

Eating Tortilla de Patatas (Tortilla Española) in Madrid, Spain

Sometimes a certain cuisine really resonates with your taste buds. While staying in Madrid, Spain we found a little cafe nearby our hotel that specialized in breakfasts. We found ourselves alternating daily between Churros (Spanish doughnuts) and Tortilla (Spanish omelettes). This particular video is dedicated entirely to Tortilla which just happens to be Audrey's favorite Spanish meal.

Eating Tortilla de Patatas (Tortilla Española) in Madrid, Spain Travel Video Transcript:

So it is time for another breakfast here in Madrid. Today we are having the madrileño, which is the local breakfast that everybody likes in this city. And if you look down here you'll be able to see this is Tortilla. Which is a potato and egg type of dish. So it is kind of like a potato and egg omelette. And it is delicious. It comes with a side of bread. And I can't wait to dig in.

Oh la la. Look at that.

It's so good. It is so good.

This is your favorite breakfast. It really is. I've been eating it daily. And on my birthday I had it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. That is how much I like it.

Okay, so apparently how this dish is made is that the potatoes are first cooked in olive oil and then the egg is added and then it is just flipped over several times until it is done. It really is just like an omelette in a lot of ways.

So the Spanish Tortilla has nothing to do with the Mexican Tortilla. The Mexican one is just like one of those big round wraps that you use for Quesadillas and Burritos. But the Spanish Tortilla is completely different even though it shares the same name, so keep that in mind. And also while we're talking about the Spanish Tortilla it can be prepared a few different ways. Like the most simple one of them all is potato and egg but you can also start adding onions, peppers, ham, so you can get a little bit fancier.

Okay, so what is the price for this delicious breakfast. This tasty breakfast comes in at around four Euros and usually it comes with a juice. They didn't have any today but it did come with a coffee and bread. And it is a filling breakfast. It is a great way to start our day. And it is definitely one of the things we have the most while we're here in Madrid.

This is part of our Travel in Spain series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Spanish culture, Spanish arts, Spanish foods, Spanish religion, Spanish cuisine and Spanish people.
