We SAILED to Tobago Cays ???????????? Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

We set out from union island and headed across to Tobago Cays

This has been a bucket list destination for quite some time. We have always been fascinated by the incredible blue water, reef and being able to swim with the elusive turtles we’ve been trying to catch a glimpse of since arriving in the Caribbean Sea.
We always thought people’s videos were obviously very over edited because the colours were way too bright and blue.
Welll… as we sailed towards Tobago Cays the colours started to change, it had us all hanging over the side of Saoirse catching a glimpse of the suddenly turquoise water. Little did we know what we were in for when we dropped anchor and had a look around at this incredible island paradise. The water was crystal clear, and an unbelievable turquoise that you didn’t look real, I kept reaching to take my sunglasses off in the effort to make sure i
Was seeing the true colours but I wasn’t wearing any sunglasses.

Trying to get video of this amazing destination was hard because we constantly felt like we needed to adjust settings to bring down the saturation but it wasn’t the settings of the camera it was just what was actually in-front of us.

Tobago Cays is located in Saint Vincent and grenadines. It is part of the tobago cays marine park.

It is home to a series of globally significant habitats including coral reefs, sea turtle nesting sites and feeding areas, aswell as small systems of mangroves.

The only thing protecting this area is the horse shoe reef that surrounds the islands. That is the only form of protection between tobago keys and the North West coast of Africa. I think that is pretty incredible. You are able to anchor on the windward side of the cays because of the protection from the coral reef. It is still bumpy and the wind still howls that side but it is so worth it for the view.

We took shelter behind Petite Bateau because there was some swell and wind coming through. There was also a massive amount of yachts on the other side of the park. We picked up a beautiful and new mooring ball. We were told that they were 3 weeks old. We guess this came into effect around the same time the fees went up over new years.

We took the dingy across to Baradal , it is known for the turtle sightings and it is cordoned off by bouys around the south side of the island.

There is growing evidence that this ecosystem is being affected by non-sustainable use and natural environmental impacts. Significant sources of natural threats to corals are storm damage and white band disease and bleaching.

The impacts associated with visiting yachts are anchor damage to sea grass and coral aswell as yachts running aground, snorkeling and diving, and bilge and wastewater discharge from yachts.
We noticed while we we in the park and snorkelling the lack of knowledge people have about the coral eco systems. While we were snorkeling we saw Many people stand on the coral aswell as touch it.

There has been a recent uproar about the Tobago Cays marine park because of the increase in marine park fees. You used to be able to anchor for free and only pay per person but now they charge you for anchoring too. There is no aproblem with charging to be in a marine park especially one as beautiful as tobago cays but maybe putting some money back into pamphlets that are given out to visiting yachts on how to protect the marine park and it’s eco system would help enlighten people about how to treat it.

Our stay in Tobago Cays was nothing short of magical. We hope to head back there again.

Swimming with Turtles in the Tobago Cays | Sailing the Caribbean

EP 200: Is the Tobago Cays all that? | Sailing the Caribbean Ricky & I went coconut hunting.. Ive always wanted to make natural pina coladas.. the real deal.. it's a bit of work for sure! We found some good coconuts and cut them open to get the meat so stay tuned for my pina colada recipe (all natural) ????

We left Mayreau and headed to the Tobago Cays.. we wanted to see if it lives up to the hype that people make about it. It was gorgeous.. However we were dissapointed to see the lack of fish. Yes there were turtles, sting rays, lobsters etc but we have yet to find a place like ascension island. Huge pelagic fish, reef fish... it seems like these places have just been so over fished which kind of sucks cause that's what we have been looking forward to the most about the Caribbean... The anchorage was rolly and not protected so we opted to leave to Canouan for the night.

Mayreau and Tobago Cays, by Catamaran

A group of us took a catamaran from St Vincent and Bequia down to the Southern Grenadines of, first, Mayreau to have a buffet lunch, then visit the exquisitely beautiful Salt Whistle Bay, before, second, travelling to the magnificent Tobago Cays. Great fun.

Ep. 12: Tobago Cays, Union Island and back to Martinique

We sail from Mayreau to the Tobago Cays and have a wonderful stay. When we are snorkeling we can see turtles and rays. Afterwards we cruise to Union Island, visit Ashton and Chatham Bay. At Seckie's and Vanessa's restaurant we spend a Caribbean evening with live music.

Then it's time to say goodbye and we set our course back to Martinique. Firstly, we sail to Bequia for clearance and then make a transit stop at Anse Cochon, St. Lucia.

Enjoy the video!

Swimming with Sharks in the Tobago Cays - Ep. 87

Arriving in the Tobago Cays is beyond spectacular for a number of reasons....firstly that water and sand contrast...WOW! Secondly, the marine life we see is the most varied that we have seen in any Caribbean Island. This marine protected haven is just magical! I manage to convince James to another haircut....poor guy! ???? This video has a little bit of everything, snorkeling with sharks and turtles galore, sailing, bonfires on the beach and (James is pretty proud of this one) amazing drone footage!

Hope you enjoy the video!

Tobago Cays in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Tobago Cays in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
The Tobago Cays are an archipelago located in the Southern Grenadines comprising five small islands and extensive coral reefs. The cays - Petit Rameau, Petit Bateau, Baradal, Petit Tabac and Jamesby - are all uninhabited and are a popular tourism destination.

The Tobago Cays are now the key element of the Tobago Cays Marine Park run by the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines government. The Marine Park consists of a 1,400-acre (5.7 km2) sand-bottom lagoon which encompasses the five cays, the inhabited island of Mayreau and the 4 km Horseshoe Reef. The Marine Park was listed as a regionally significant ecosystem under the SPAW Protocol in December 2014.

The most extensive and well-developed coral reef complexes in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines occur on shallow shelves around the windward sides of Mayreau and Union Islands and the Cays themselves. In addition, principal vegetation types include beach vegetation and dry forest. With the exception of a small mangrove in Petit Rameau and salt pond in Mayreau, there are no wetlands in the Cays.

Major users of the area include: cruise ships (an estimated 50,000 visitors each year of which 10,000 visit the Cays); yachts (an estimated 3,000 yachts anchor in the lagoon each year); day charters (from nearby hotels); sport divers and snorkelers; and fishing enthusiasts.

The Grenadines are geologically older than St. Vincent and are situated on an extensive shallow bank of volcanic origin – known as the southern Lesser Antilles arc platform (SLAAP). The SLAAP is a product of Miocene uplift and characterized by Eocene to Pliocene extrusive to intrusive igneous rocks along with sedimentary rocks such as limestone, marl, and chert, and epiclastic arc-derived volcaniclastic units composed of mudstone, sandstone, and conglomerate. The islands are composed of a variety of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The area is an active subduction zone, and lies along the interface of the Caribbean and South American Tectonic plates. Kick ’em Jenny is an undersea volcano north of Grenada, and there is also another less active volcano named Kick ’em Jack in the area. The shallow bank of the Grenadines extends from St Vincent to Grenada, and has a natural boundaries of the Tobago Trough to the east and the Grenada Trough to the west, where the depth increases rapidly. The shallow bank creates ideal conditions for the formation of productive seagrass beds, mangroves and coral reefs.

Surrounding the Tobago Cays are several shallow fringing reefs around the islands, and a major bank-barrier reef known as Horseshoe Reef. Other major reefs in the park include World’s End Reef, Egg Reef and Mayreau Gardens. The fringing reefs around Mayreau and the Mayreau Gardens reef are considered to be the most biodiverse and healthy, with Horseshoe Reef and the reef around Petit Tabac being the next richest. Finally, the World’s End and Egg reef, as well as the other fringing reefs are considered to be the most degraded and least diverse in the park. The common corals on the reefs are Montastrea, Porites, Acropora, Millepora and Siderastrea species, as well as patches of soft corals such as Gorgonians (Sea Fans) and sponges. Large fish, such as barracuda and jacks, are occasionally found in the park, although most of the fish species are small. Algae and disease are prominent across all reefs and affect coral health. Surveys in 2007 concluded that most reefs were dominated by dead coral rubble and had live coral cover between 5% and 30%, and all reefs are considered to be in decline.

The Marine Park contains a number of important threatened species, both terrestrial and marine. There are populations of Brown Pelican, Bridled Terns and Iguanas in the park, and there are many migratory birds which pass through the area. The beaches and sea grass beds are feeding and nesting grounds for Green Turtles, Hawksbill Turtles and Leatherback Turtles. The reefs are home to many species of listed coral from the Milleporidae, Alcyonacea and Scleractinia families, there are also populations of Queen Conch and Caribbean Spiny lobster in the park.

Sailing Grenada and the Grenadines - Tobago Cays

Day 5 of our Grenada Charter takes us to the Tobago Cays. We spend the day snorkeling, swimming and relaxing in one of the most amazing anchorages in the Caribbean. The cays are famous for the large horseshoe reef that protects the anchorage and the many turtles, fish and rays that make it their home.

Kite boarders love the area because of the steady trade winds and calm waters behind the reef. We sat there for a few hours and watched them ride back and forth.

We met several Boat Boys and made a few t-shirt purchases to help support the local economy. After a long happy hour we had a great meal prepared by Cabe and Cheryl.

The Tobago Cays are a must stop for anyone cruising through the Grenadines.
