Jerash (Jordan) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Jerash in Jordan.
Northern Jordan contains many magnificent historic locations including that of Gerasa, today’s Jerash, that is one of the most well-preserved metropolises of ancient Rome.Gerasa had its economic and cultural high season in the first century A.D. while under Roman rule. Situated on a small hill, the Temple Of Zeus was built in the years 162 and 163 A.D. The town developed quickly within the union of the Greek Dekapolis, a federation of ten important ancient cites in the Near East and profited from the agriculture of the surrounding area and from ore mining in the nearby Aljun Mountains. This financial success gave rise to the city’s large building projects, particularly in the second century A.D. A further remarkable feature of the architecture in Gerasa is the wide and eight hundred metre long street, the Cardo Maximus, once the city’s main street. It was originally flanked by columns, five hundred of which have survived. Directly south of the Artemis Temple are the remains of the Sankt Theodor Church that has the three aisled ground plan of a basilica and dates back to the fifth century. At the beginning of the nineteenth century Gerasa was rediscovered by archaeologists. The twentieth century brought with it new excavations that have since returned this amazing ancient city into the full light of day.

So this is a Roman planned theater. When in use it could sit up to three thousand people and it was used for all kinds of performances.
Meow.

We're now at the temple of Artemis the Goddess of the Sea.

So with the wall we were looking at just behind the olive press you can track the three different civilizations because at the very bottom you have the Greek blocks which were all different sizes and didn't really match. Then you can see the Roman style which were the big blocks of limestone and then at the very top there were smaller blocks which were placed by an Islamic culture.

This particular section was only uncovered in the 1970's. Prior to that it was underground.

Jerash is considered one of the largest and most well-preserved sites of Greek and Roman architecture in the world outside Italy and is sometimes misleadingly referred to as the Pompeii of the Middle East or of Asia, referring to its size, extent of excavation, and level of preservation.

Jerash is the site of the ruins of the Greek city of Gerasa, also referred to as Antioch on the Golden River. Ancient Greek inscriptions from the city support that the city was founded by Alexander the Great and his general Perdiccas, who allegedly settled aged Macedonian soldiers there during the spring of 331 BC when he left Egypt and crossed Syria en route to Mesopotamia. However, other sources, namely the city's former name of Antioch on the Chrysorrhoas, point to a founding by Seleucid King Antioch IV, while still others attribute the founding to Ptolemy II of Egypt.

Jerash Jordan

Jerash in Jordan, simply put as Rome out of Rome. Jerash is probably the next best place to see Roman architecture which dates back centuries, and of all places, in Jordan. I bet you not many people knew about this.

Incredible Roman structures are found in Jerash, including a Hippodrome, Temple of Artemis, Temple of Zeus, Roman theaters, aqueducts and many more. In one word, it is amazing. I could not believe the amount of structures found here.

If you are travelling to Jordan, this is one of the highly recommended places to visit. Jerash in about an hours drive out of Amman in Jordan too. Prepare to spend at least half a day here, with lots of walking. You need a tour guide to explain structures and the overall history too.

My visit to Jordan was in late 2015 and this is one of my Jordan videos. Subscribe to my channel for more upcoming videos and hope you like my Jerash Jordan video.

The moving column of the Artemis Temple - Jerash, Jordan

Moving column of the Artemis Temple - Jerash, Jordan...
Jerash is known for the ruins of the Greco-Roman city of Gerasa, also referred to as Antioch on the Golden River. It is sometimes misleadingly referred to as the Pompeii of the Middle East or Asia, referring to its size, extent of excavation and level of preservation (though Jerash was never buried by a volcano). Jerash is considered one of the most important and best preserved Roman cities in the Near East. It was a city of the Decapolis.
There are a large number of striking monuments located in Jerash: the Corinthium column, Hadrian's Arch, a circus/hippodrome, two immense temples (to Zeus and Artemis), the nearly unique oval Forum, which is surrounded by a fine colonnade, a long colonnaded street or cardo, two theatres (the Large South Theatre and smaller North Theatre), two baths, a scattering of small temples and an almost complete circuit of city walls.
Today the ruins of Jerash are thoroughly excavated and excellently preserved. This has led to a nickname, the Asian Pompeii.

Guide to the ancient Roman city of Jerash in Jordan

Jerash is a city in Jordan, north of the capital Amman. Inhabited since the Bronze Age, it’s known for the ruins of the walled Greco-Roman settlement of Gerasa just outside the modern city.

Full visit of Jerash (Jordanie / Jordan / الأردن) in 1991

Caution : This video is very old (1991)
(EN) Jerash, the Gerasa of Antiquity, is the capital and largest city of Jerash Governorate (محافظة جرش), which is situated in the north of Jordan, 48 kilometres (30 mi) north of the capital Amman towards Syria. Jerash Governorate's geographical features vary from cold mountains to fertile valleys from 250 to 300 metres (820 to 980 ft) above sea level, suitable for growing a wide variety of crops.
Inhabitants of Souf & Sakib and other villages in Jerash region were among the founders of the modern city of Jerash in the second half of the nineteenth century, A strong earthquake in 747 AD destroyed large parts of Jerash, while subsequent earthquakes along with the wars and turmoil contributed to additional destruction. Its destruction and ruins remained buried in the soil for hundreds of years until they were discovered by German Orientalist Ulrich Jasper Seetzen in 1806 AD to begin excavation and to return life to rise to the current Jerash. Then followed 70 years after by the community of Muslims, Circassians, who emigrated to Jordan from the land of the Caucasus in 1878 AD after the Ottoman-Russian war. And a large community of people of Syria at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Remains in the Greco-Roman Jerash include:
▪ The Corinthium column
▪ Hadrian's Arch
▪ The circus/hippodrome
▪ The two large temples (dedicated to Zeus and Artemis)
▪ The nearly unique oval Forum, which is surrounded by a fine colonnade,
▪ The long colonnaded street or cardo
▪ Two theatres (the Large South Theatre and smaller North Theatre)
▪ Two baths, and a scattering of small temples
▪ An almost complete circuit of city walls.
Most of these monuments were built by donations of the city's wealthy citizens. From AD 350, a large Christian community lived in Jerash, and between AD 400-600, more than thirteen churches were built, many with superb mosaic floors. A cathedral was built in the fourth century. An ancient synagogue with detailed mosaics, including the story of Noah, was found beneath a church. (wikipedia)

Discovering Jerash: Near Amman, Jordan | History

The Graeco-Roman city of Jerash, formerly Gerasa, is situated in a fertile valley, less than one hour’s drive north from Amman in Jordan. Known as the ‘Pompeii of the East’ for its extraordinary state of preservation, Jerash is the largest and best-preserved Roman city outside Italy. It was hidden for centuries in sand before being excavated and restored over the past 70 years. Its outstanding architecture is clearly visible in its paved and colonnaded streets, soaring hilltop temples, handsome theatres, spacious public squares and plazas, baths, fountains and city walls pierced by towers and gates. If you are lucky, you might get to see mock chariot races or a performance in its theatres. Every year, during July, this ancient city comes to life when the annual Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts takes place.
