Exploring WILLEMSTAD, Curacao - The Cultural Quarter
Hi everyone! This is episode seven of my Dutch Caribbean series in which I travel to Aruba, Curacao (Curaçao) and Bonaire. In this video, I explore the Otrobanda (Otrabanda) neighbourhood of Willemstad, the capital of Curacao.
Otrobanda is known as the cultural hub of Willemstad, and means the opposite side in Papiamento, the local language. The area was established in 1707, and is connected with Punda, which was established in 1634, via the Queen Emma Bridge.
The vlog stars with me having a Curacao breakfast at the hotel, where I also admire the view of Otrobanda from the rooftop. I use this opportunity to talk about the meaning behind the word Curacao and different interpretations.
I then hit the streets of Otrobanda for some exploring. I visit a few clothes shop as well as a place selling lottery tickets, and engage with some locals throughout. I also explore some residential parts and learn some interesting facts about some of the houses.

The iconic Queen Emma Bridge, also known as the Swinging Old Lady, connects the two sides of the city and opens to allow ships to pass through.
The cultural diversity of Curacao is evident in its cuisine, music, and festivals. The local cuisine reflects influences from African, Dutch, Spanish, and Indonesian cultures, resulting in a fusion of flavors and dishes. Traditional delicacies include keshi yena (stuffed cheese), stoba (meat stew), and funchi (a cornmeal side dish). Curaçao scores again at Travel Shows across North America!
The CTB USA Team impresses potential consumers and clients by bringing a preview of Curaçao's rich and unique culture, history and cuisine at key Travel Shows.
Tens of thousands of Americans and Canadians visited the colorful and impressive Curaçao stand to experience the warmth of our people through authentic dances as Tambu, Seu, Mazurka and Walz. In additions sessions were provided how to make Curaçao sweets as the original Ko'i Lechi and to obtain a copy of the recipe.
At various Travel Shows, like the New York Times Travel Show, Boston Globe Travel Show and others, the CTB Team along with partner hotels joined in offering special show deals and offers, plus the possibility to actual book vacation packages to Curaçao onsite, in the Curaçao booth.
The CTB USA Team is pleased as Curaçao is in a hype in North America as one of the most popular new to be discovered destinations as selected as a 'Top Destination 2012' by Frommer's, one of the '5 Caribbean Islands to Discover Now' by Budget Travel and a top three '2012 Honeymoon Hot Spot' by Condé Nast Traveler!
