Crete's Southern Beaches - Sfakia, Sweet Water, Loutro, & Marmara

A great day trip from Chania or Rethymno is to the southern beaches of Crete, including Sfakia, Sweet Water Beach, Loutro, and Marmara with An hour and a half drive or so through beautiful valleys and gorges brings you to the jumping off town of Sfakia. From there, there are various water taxi services and ferries in the harbor which bring people to the series of beaches and towns of Sweet Water Beach, Loutro, and Marmara. In this video, Lefteris of Notos Mare Diving Center and Boat Rental in Sfakia talks us through the area and what visitors can expect from an adventure to these beaches, including the swimming, tavernas and restaurants. It's a bit far of a drive from Heraklion for a day trip, but could be well paired with a stay in the hotels of Sfakia or Loutro, or ferrying from Agia Roumeli after hiking the Samaria Gorge with minimal planning.

ferry/ferries, water taxi, restaurants, taverna, swimming, hotels, Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion, Samaria Gorge, and all the villages that are on that map in the video.

We produce excellent Greece travel planning guides and videos to Crete, Santorini, Mykonos, Athens, and beyond, including hotel and restaurant reviews and suggested best tours and things to do.

Chora Sfakion | Virtual Trip On A Cretan Village In Chania Crete Greece 4K

A location unique in the Mediterranean Sea

Sfakia, Crete, is a unique place all over Greece. It is a location that combines high mountains and great beaches, and until some decades ago, when there weren’t paved roads connecting the North to the South of the island, it has also been a place isolated from the big cities on the north of Crete.
Sfakia is the biggest municipality in Chania prefecture, and also the least densely populated municipality in Crete Island, with less than 2.500 people living in a total area of 468 square kilometres.

The strong will and independent spirit of the people of Sfakia, together with the isolation of the area and the lack of considerable natural resources, are the main reasons that the region of Sfakia was wholly or partly independent during the centuries Crete was conquered by the Venetians or the Ottomans.
Sfakia, Crete, is renowned in the history of Crete for its rebellions and uprisings, which most of the time started here and were then spread to West Crete and to the whole island. One of the most known revolutionaries in Greek history, Daskalogiannis, was born here.
Many historians have said that the rocky, rugged terrain of Sfakia has left its mark in the local peoples’ tough attitude. The Sfakian people were historically intolerant of any foreign conqueror, and made every attempt to be independent and free, no matter the cost. This was true even in recent Greek history, when during the German occupation of Crete in World War II, Sfakia was the main base of the local Greek resistance.

The region of Sfakia combines the high White Mountains of Crete, or Lefka Ori, on the north, with superb beaches on the south. Among the mountains and the sea, numerous gorges have been formed during the centuries, like the famous Samaria Gorge, the longest gorge in Europe.
To the north of Sfakia region, we find the beautiful plateaus of Omalos, where Samaria Gorge starts its path, and Askyfou. Going South, following the direction of the gorges of the White Mountains, we descend towards the South Cretan Sea, or Liviko Pelagos, where the capital of Sfakia, the coastal village of Hora Sfakion is found. Hora Sfakion and the nearby coastal village of Frangokastelo are accessible by paved road, but some of the most well-known coastal villages, like the very picturesque Loutro and Agia Roumeli, are only accessible by boat or on foot after long walks.
Most of the beaches in Sfakia, Crete, are pristine and beautiful. There are both sandy beaches and beaches with pebbles in the region, and the waters are crystal-clear.
For the visitors that like walking, the region of Sfakia has excellent hiking paths. Apart from the hiking paths near the sea, there is also the European hiking footpath E4 that passes through the White Mountains.
Sfakia, Crete, is an especial place, which has managed to retain its traditions and natural environment unchanged through the centuries. When visiting West Crete, a visit to Sfakia, and to its picturesque, authentic villages, is an experience that shouldn’t be missed.

Loutro, Crete! Hiking From Sweetwater Beach to Loutro

The hike from Sweetwater Beach to Loutro is special. In my last video - and you're soft if you have not watched it yet - we hiked to Glyka Nera (Sweetwater Beach) where we stopped and enjoyed some money views, great beach views, heavenly blue water and some wine before we finished up and headed up the mountain towards Loutro.

The hike from Sweetwater to Loutro is just as amazing, if not more. After a couple of glasses of wine, maybe a little too much to be doing a cliff trail right after, I started thinking I could speak to the mountain goats, so appreciate the first scene of the video with me when I think I'm having a conversation with goats.

After that, tho, it's off on the trail. You can see Loutro off in the distance, but no matter how far I walk, it doesn't seem to be getting any closer. At least I had on the sunscreen today, tho!

About halfway to Loutro, I found one of the moniest of money resting stops, a beautiful secluded beach with the smoothest water and best views of the mountains in a cove. It was just me and two couples on this beach. I had to lay out the towel and just lay down and enjoy the sound of the water crashing against the rocks, looking up at the blue sky and appreciating every moment I had in this place. So money.

After that relaxing experience I got up again and headed off to Loutro. Once in the tiny harbor town, we stroll through the restaurants and shops to the other side of the harbor where there is another nice beach. I purchased my ticket for the last ferry out then headed up the cliff to tour the ruins of an old Venetian castle and the ancient city of Phoenix, which eventually became Loutro. I check out an old church, tour some more ruins and then head back into town to eat typical Greek food, drink typical Greek drink while waiting for the ferry.

The ferry dropped me in Chora Sfakion where I grabbed my rental car and drove back over the mountain to Chania, where I ended the night in a still-popular club where I used to spend a lot of time back in the day, lol.

Ah yeah.

Enjoy!

Sfakia Loutro

A video from our sea kayaking day trip starting from Chora Sfakion to Loutro village.

Loutro Chania Crete Greece

Loutro is small picturesque village 95 km southern from Chania. It’s special village because there is no access by cars and no roads. You can get there only by boat or by walking.

Loutro means bath and the place is named like that because many ancient spas used to be in this area. The remnants of old stone houses are still remaining around the current village. Except that there are also ruins of Ottoman fortress on the hill behind and of Venetian fortress just at the western edge of Loutro bay. The Church Sotiros Christou can be reached by comfortable path 200 m western behind the village.

Nowadays, Loutro is touristic destination. The coast of Loutro includes three organised pebbly beaches. The sea in Loutro bay has incredible colors of shades from dark blue to green and is so clear and irresistible to bath, swimm and dive.

Marmara beach Chania Crete Greece

Marmara Beach lies at the end of Aradena Gorge on south coast of Crete. The distance from Chania is 94 km, but Marmara Beach isn't accesible by car. However it's possible to get there on foot either from Loutro (5km - 1,5 hour) or through Aradena Gorge (7km - 3,5 hours from Aradena village) or from Agia Roumeli (15 km - 4 hours). There are also regular boat connections from Loutro in summer.

Marmara is small pebble beach surrounded by rocky coast with attractive caves. It's possible to swimm and dive through them. They are also the main characteristic of Marmara Beach as marmara means marble in Greek and the name is given exactly concerning the surface pattern of local rocks that is similar to the appearance of marble.

There are sunbeds and parasols on the beach and taverna by the side offers the place of shadow and refreshments. The small white church is close to the taverna, just few meters up on the rock.

Marmara Beach is unique place with distant location and not the easiest acces which is quite typical for southcoast beaches. But that makes it more challenging to visit and discover its charm.

Sweetwater Beach Crete Greece 2021 (Glyka Nera)

Sweetwater Beach (Glyka Nera) is absolutely one of my favorite beaches in the world, let alone on Crete. The cliff hike to get there makes it more fun and a more incredible experience, for sure, but the vibe down there is pretty insane. Just a strip of rocky sand at the base of the rugged Cretan mountains accessible only by cliff hike or water taxi. So money.

The video opens with a clip from Elizabeth from Germany. I left Chania to drive over the mountains, park at Sfakia, hike to Loutro then the plan was to ferry back to Chora Sfakion (Sfakia). Elizabeth had missed her bus to Sfakia, so she hopped on one to Vryses where she tried her luck hitchhiking over the mountain. Luckily enough, about 5 minutes after she first stuck her thumb in the air, along came VFC, who always enjoys new people and new experiences. She had some really amazing stories from all the years she's been coming to Crete, was a pleasurable ride. I dropped her in Sfakia where she caught a ferry to Loutro then a boat to a remote cove that has a hotel sitting isolated away from anything resembling civilization.

Enjoy the video of the cliffwalk, it's a safe hike, but it is a straight down drop at some points, so ya gotta be careful, too. When VFC films and walks cliffs, that's stuff that has a don't try this at home label on it. You may encounter some mountain goats along the trail, too. You will definitely smell their sh!t, that's for sure.

Once on the beach, that's when the paradise experience begins. Some trees along the base of the mountains complement the amazingly beautiful blue water. The water, although a bit chilly after hiking in the sun, is so fresh and smoothe on my sunburnt skin - just love it.

After a swim and a quick sun bathe, it's over to the floating beach bar for some wine. Only a little bit, as I'll be hiking out over the cliff to head to Loutro after my quick pit stop at Sweetwater. Loutro is roughly another hour hike from Glyka Nera.

Sweetwater is a nude beach, too, so don't be surprised if you see some swinging lumber and natural forest on your way in during the hike. VFC doesn't give gratuitous video of that scene in the video, tho, so don't get too excited. I will say, however, on this day I actually saw some pretty hot nudists. That's a rarity. But either way, give them their privacy, put the camera away and let them just hang out in peace (see what I did there?).

Enoy this experience along with me. I absolutely love this place.

Ah yeah!

Sweetwater Beach, Crete Greece - Cliff Hike to Glyka Nera Beach, Chora Sfakion

VFC's Travels Merchandise Store: etsy.com/store/vfcstravels

An awesome cliff hike, a beautiful secluded beach, and Cretan village wine in beachside bar. On a beautiful day in southern Crete, you can't ask for more than that.

The hike to Sweetwater Beach starts on the cliffside road to the west of Chora Sfakion, before the most intense of the hairpin switchback turns up to Anapolis begin. Parking on the hill, come along as we hike down the cliff, along the mountain before it spits us out right onto the beautifully-secluded Sweetwater Beach (Glyka Nera).

When arriving at the beach, I've got to admit that there were a few initial surprises waiting for me, but to each his or her own and what a great day it was. The water was perfect and the wine even better.

There's no life like the good life, I like to say, and this trip to Sweetwater was one of the better ideas of my trip.

Enjoy!

The Spectacular Sweetwater Beach, Sfakia Crete

Another one of VFC's favorite spots - in the world, not just on Crete. Glyka Nera - Sweetwater Beach is such an amazing wonder that you can only get to by a sweet cliff hike or by boat.

Shop VFC's Travels Merch Store! Ah yeah!

You'll get a pretty good idea of the hike in this video, but if you go by boat you can grab it from Chora Sfakion and take the first stop at Sweetwater. The boat then goes on to Loutro, but you can also hike to Loutro, it's about another hour of hiking from Sweetwater Beach.

The freshwater springs that run underground into the rocky beach is what gives this amazing place the name Sweetwater Beach.

Half the beach is a nude beach, so don't be surprised!

And the beach bar - food is amazing and so is the wine! As always!

Ah yeah! Enjoy and subscribe!!!
