NYC Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go to New York City

Things YOU need to know before you travel to New York City. NYC consists of 5 Boroughs, Manhattan, the most famous and dense is also the smallest. Brooklyn is the most populated, with 2.6 million residents (total of 8.5M in NYC). Queens is the largest, and “most ethnically diverse” county in the US. Bronx is the northenmost and the only one that is part of the US Mainland. Staten Island is the most suburban

Manhattan is BIG -- don’t expect to walk the whole thing in a day
5 days is probably the sweet spot. No less than 3 days.

Wear comfortable shoes
Girls: Sex and the City says everybody walks in heels all the time -- not so much.
Don’t try and walk everywhere, the subway is there for a reason.

NYC is Expensive! Everything costs more here.
The city runs on tips

New Yorkers aren’t really rude.. They are just efficient.

Expect to pay to use a bathroom, there really aren’t many good public toilets

Weather
For about 8 months out of the year it is chilly. And, for about 3 months it’s just plain miserable. Be prepared for really cold and windy, or really hot, humid, and muggy. Be prepared to rain always.

Summer: Highs 84F/29C Lows: 68F/20C (July)
Winter: Highs: 38F/3C - Lows 25F/-4C (January)

Winter Footwear -- puddles the size of small lakes
Layers

Best months: September, October, May and June

Getting in

Airports
LaGuardia (M80 Bus)
JFK (Airtrain to Howard Beach then catch the subway)
Newark (30 mins on Amtrak or NJ Transit)
Beware of unnoficial cabs

Trains -- to Penn Station or Grand Central. Grand Central is amazing.
Megabus if you’re on the east coast
Driving -- if you do drive in… just plan to park and leave your car for the duration of your stay.

Transportation in NYC

The Subway mostly runs north south… east and west you’ll be walking it
If you’re in NYC for awhile, get a week or month long Subway pass
Avoid the empty subway car, it’s empty for a reason. Hot or smelly.
Don’t lean on the subway poles… more people can hold on to it
Pay attention to the local, or express trains.
Get in the subway at the correct entrance, going the right direction, and for the right line

There are tons of yellow taxis… but they are notoriously hard to hail in bad weather
Flagship city for Uber, Lyft. But traffic is slow.
If you’re running late, don’t take a taxi. You WILL get stuck in traffic.

Walking -- don’t drop in the middle of the sidewalk

Ferrys for a different way to get around
NYC Ferry - East River route for some of the best views

Citi Bikes -- 10,000 bikes and 600 stations -- Download the citi bike app - $12/day
Bus Tours -- skip it

Times Square

Crowded, chaotic, dazzling and overpriced
Is really small -- and there’s not much to do once you get there.
Whatever you do, don’t eat here. The food is overpriced and mediocre due to high rent.

Broadway Shows
Book way ahead of time
There’s a vibrant “Off-Broadway” Scene
Book of Mormon and Avenue Q are my favorites
Check out the TKTs booth for cheap tickets or online now

Parks (Central Park & the High Line)
Central Park Is really big -- and no subway across
Central Park is 800 Acres
Strawberry Fields, Sheep’s Meadow, ice skating rinks.
Visit the High Line on a weekday to avoid the crowds

Big Apple Attractions
Statue of Liberty -- book ahead of time
Cant get tix for the Statue of Liberty, ride the Staten Island Ferry for free!
Empire State Building -- Long Lines
Top of the Rock is really cool -- great views of the Empire State
New WTC Observatory
9/11 Memorial ($2 Reservation Fee
Museum of Modern Art
Metropolitan Museum of Art
American Museum of Natural History (Suggested Admission)
Chelsea Market
New York Public Library
Flatiron Building
Shopping along 5th Avenue

Hotels
Expensive!
Save some money by staying in Queens, Brooklyn, or Staten Island
If money is no object -- the Park Hyatt is amazing
Marriott Marquis on Times Square in the middle of it all

Food
Food carts and trucks can be really good
The Halal Guys is a “must eat”
Grimaldi’s Pizza (In Brooklyn under the bridge) and Lomardis in Little Italy
Pastrami on Rye
Shake Shack started here
Chinatown Get noodles at Xi’an Famous Foods (location in Chinatown)
Bagels with Lox
New York Hotdogs from Gray’s Papaya
New York Cheesecake

Visit New York - 5 Things You Will Love & Hate about New York City, USA

Visiting the Big Apple of New York City Can Be Amazing or Something Besides Amazing. Here we go through the best and the worst of visiting New York City. From the I LOVE NYC Shirt crowd to the amazing culture and food, to the toilets that make you not want to go to the bathroom and smells that remind you of your junior high cafeteria 20 years ago. The 5 Things you Will Love & Hate about Visiting New York City!
Filmed on Ellis Island, USA
Copyright Mark Wolters 2016
The Hates of New York City
#1. The random nasty smells that New York sometimes produces.
#2.
#3. Your Subway Experience - the subway goes everywhere in New York and that is awesome, however the crowded rush hour traffic, the interesting people and mistaking a local and an express train can make it for a bit of a headache.
#4. Your Sidewalk Experience. Make sure you step to the side when you want to take pictures in NYC. Otherwise be prepared to be bowled over by locals, tourists and any number of random things.
#5. The lack of clean public toilets... just make sure you use the toilet before you leave the hotel and if you really need a toilet the museums tend to have decent public toilets.

The Loves of New York City
#1. Exploring and Wandering New York - from seeing the Empire State Building for the first time to strolling Central Park and Brooklyn there is so much to enjoy just walking around and enjoying New York.
#2. The amount of cultural opportunities New York has - from world class museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the American Museum of Natural History to the Museum of Modern Art and Ellis Island, New York and around has a number of cultural outings for all types of travelers.
#3. The New York-isms - from having a slice of NYC pizza to bagels at a diner to a deli lunch to the crazy people screaming and the iconic sights, New York is so... New York and you will love it!
#4. The Diversity and Multiculturalism of New York City. From the numerous neighborhoods, restaurants and bodegas to the languages, foods and fun, there is something from everywhere and for everyone in New York.
#5. The New Yorkers - though they get a bad rap, the people of New York really are great and can be one of the most enjoyable and surprising parts of visiting New York City.

New York: 5 Things Every Tourist Must Know Before They Visit New York City

Want Some Travel Advice for Visiting New York City & Getting the Most Out of Your Visit? Well here we have 5 tips for travelers and tourists heading to New York, the Big Apple! These tips will help you enjoy more of what to see and do and enjoy in New York!
filmed on Ellis Island
Copyright Mark Wolters 2016

Tip #1. Walking is a way of life in New York, so don't stop in the middle of the sidewalk. You will get run over. Step to the side to take your pictures of the Empire State Building or Times Square.
Tip #2. Be Ready! Whether it is to pay the check or pay for a drink or get on the subway be ready to pay as things move quickly in New York and the locals will get annoyed at you for wasting their time.
Tip #3. Have Cash... oddly enough there are still a lot of places in New York (comparatively) that still only take cash. ATMs are everywhere and they charge a lot for withdrawals.
Tip #4. You can enjoy New York without busting your budget. With museums that have suggested prices where you can pay what ever you want, to free nights at museums and free sights you can see New York and still have some money left over, though the hotels are insane expensive no matter what.
Tip #5. Use the toilet before you leave your hotel. New York public toilets are nasty so make sure you use the toilet before you leave the hotel.

10 Things You Will Hate About NEW YORK CITY

10 Things You Will Hate About New York City

When it comes to New York City, most will say they have a love/hate relationship with it. People miss it when they’re away and they want out when they’re here.
I personally think that NYC is an amazing place to visit, but if you live here (and are part of the working class), you’re screwed.
If you’re one of those considering a move to NYC, I bet you think it’s gonna be a glamorous life, don’t you? You’ve seen the famous influencers living the NY life and making it look like it’s the coolest, most amazing urban paradise there is. However there are a few things I think you should consider before your big move.
Sure NYC has got lots of good points to it, but there’s a lot of bad that comes with the good, and much of it is scary, ugly, and absolutely unbearable.
Today I give you the low-down on life in the Big Apple, that way you know exactly what you’re signing up for.
So here are 10 things you will hate about NYC.

What I LOVE & HATE about New York City!

Visit New York - Hotel Advice for New York City

Heading to New York & Not Sure What Your Hotel Accommodations Will Be Like? Well here we give you advice and tips on some of the typical hotels you will find in New York City.
1. They are expensive so plan accordingly. There are cheap tourist things to do in New York City, but the hotel is not one of them.
2. There are high taxes on hotel rooms which makes the rooms even more expensive.
3. The rooms are usually small, so you if you are a family make sure you let them know so you will have enough room.
4. WiFi is usually free, but breakfast is not. Many hotels do not offer breakfast, but there are a lot of options in NYC for breakfast so you will be fine.
5. You will always want to use the toilet before you leave the hotel as NYC public toilets are nasty.
6. You probably should tip the cleaning staff between $2 and $5 per day. We leave a little note for them as well.
7. There are high early check in fees, but most hotels will hold your luggage for free.
