Enjoy a bowl of delicious Colorado green chile, or munch on sopapillas at beloved Casa Bonita. Denver is all of this – and more. This breathtaking video, produced by Denver-based Airball Creative, takes the viewer on a street-level view of all the amazing things that make The Mile High City a truly unique place.

“Breathless” by Ken Arkind

“It started with a spark. A pickaxe striking stone. Digging for gold like a compliment. A flame burning across the crest of a stone wave, spreading until it became a city. A thousand golden lights shining brighter than all of the rings on Dealin’ Doug's fingers.

So how much sunshine does it take to brighten the world? Over 300 days a year, this landlocked lighthouse guiding the world safely to the shores of a granite ocean. A May snowstorm is only a cry for attention. A child. Tugging at her mother’s skirt. The stone ripples of its cloth cascading across the front range. The tracks of the California Zephyr spreading like veins form her open arms waving her children in for dinner. The gentle horizontal curve of Colfax is her hip where she balances her children, raising us higher and higher because the sky is never enough, and we already know that we can touch it. We can fingerpaint the atmosphere.

We train dust screamers, we clean air singers, we West Side dancers, we Five Points jazz swagger. We are a game of street-ball players played under a Park Hill sunset. We are a 16th Street love story. We know that green chile is its own food group. That it’s not a birthday party unless it comes with sopapilla and cliff divers. That shoes are always optional. That an amphitheater is best when it’s natural. That large blue statues of animals are national treasures. That the world will not wait for you, so you build it for yourself. That it’s important to know who our heroes are and treat them accordingly, which means just like everyone else.

This is an elevated stage. The world is watching, so sing for them, or just yourself. When the air is thin it makes your heart bigger. We know how to dream here. Our bodies have learned to pull what they can from the atmosphere. It’s why we’re a little crazier here. We play a little harder here. This home. This town. This speaker stone city. This cowtown high noon symphony. Waiting for the rest of the world to catch up. To look them in the eyes while grinning and saying, ‘Yeah. All those tall buildings sure are beautiful, but have you seen our mountains? That’s what a skyline is supposed to look like.’”

Comedians Doing Stuff in Denver: Janae Burris Makes a Masterpiece w/ Colorado Symphony's Christopher

How about a standing ovation for Denver comedian Janae Burris as learns the fine art of music conducting from Colorado Symphony Associate Conductor Chris Dragon at Boettcher Concert Hall. Motivational training montage included.

Watch the full series of Comedians Doing Stuff in Denver at visitdenver.com/comedy.

J= Comedian Janae Burris C= Resident Conductor Christopher Dragon

--
J- I’m doing my best to fit in in Colorado, you know I’ve got my plaid shirt game on fleek. I’ve got all the plaids, red plaid, blue plaid, funeral plaid, wedding plaid. All the plaids!
-
*music playing*
C- Janae
J- Hey Chris!
C- What are you doing?
I was just about to conduct the Colorado Symphony, I’ve seen you, you make it look pretty easy, I figured I would give it a try.
C- Well actually, it takes a lot of work to become a conductor, you can’t just pick up your baton and start. Here, let me show you
*Chris conducts Colorado Symphony*
J- Will you teach me?
C- I can try
J- Okay
--
J- Hey there, I’m Janae Burris, Colorado comedian and I’m here today at Boettcher Concert Hall with Chris Dragon, Associate Conductor of the Colorado Symphony and he’s going to teach me how to be a conductor. Chris, I am very, very ready for this, so ready that I even brought my own baton…Ever heard of Star Wars?
C- Whoa, why don’t we focus on picking a piece of music.
J- Great, I’m already ready for that, I brought my mix tape, number 5 is my favorite track, I think you should play it in your car, that’s where it sounds the best
C- Maybe we should just start with some fundamentals
--
*training montage*
--
J- What’s one of the most challenging gigs you’ve ever had as a conductor?
C- Have you ever conducted an orchestra in a t-rex suit?
Together- Tiny arms, tiny arms
--
J- Have you ever been heckled before? Anyone from the audience just been like, “you suck!”
--
*conducting montage*
--
C- Just in the trumpets, on bar 94, let’s have more of a diminuendo between beats 2 and 3
J- Like make it bump though, like hit it hard, something I could drop it to
--
J- So what’s your plan b for this, when this inevitably falls apart
C- No plan B
J- Are you a chef maybe, a secret chef?
C- There is nothing else that I could do, waving a stick is probably the only talent
J- Where else can you even wave a stick?
--
So what do you call a cow with no arms and legs?
J- Hmm, uhm I don’t know?
Ground beef! Does it have to be clean or can I tell a dirty one?
--
J- Chris, do you think I’m ready?
C- Noooo. But we need to get back to work
J-Good enough, let’s do it
J- Nailed it!
