I signed up to go on a tour with Azizi Life, and I did the home food tour. It turned out to be even better than I was expecting, and truly a glimpse into rural life and a community in Rwanda. The food, the culture, and the dancing after lunch was one of the highlights of the day!

Muhanga Town - In the morning we first drove from Kigali to Muhanga Town, about an hour outside of Kigali. The green mountain roads were spectacular. Rwanda is known as the land of 1000 hills, and I think that might be an underestimation as there are never ending hills in this part of Central Africa.

After being warmly greeted and welcomed by the community of ladies, we first went to go fetch water. This is something many of us, myself for sure, take for granted. But in the rural countryside of Africa, even in cities, there are many people who have no running water, and when they need water for anything, they must walk to the well or source of freshwater, and carry all the water they need. It’s something to always remember.

Next we got started cooking all the food. Most of the ingredients for the Rwandan feast they cooked were from right there, on the hillside, from the small family farms. We had dozens of different vegetables, and of course - beans which were one of the most important foods of this regions of Africa. It wouldn’t be Rwandan food without beans as I’ve heard! Final dish was akabenz, a famous Rwandan pork dish.

You could taste the freshness of all the ingredients. The food was honestly a little plain for my usual taste buds, but I fully appreciated the natural ingredients, the simplicity of the dishes, and the love poured into each dish.

After eating a giant Rwandan feast, all of a sudden they started breaking out into dance. It was one of the highlights of this entire experience.

Thank you to the entire community for hosting us and to Azizi Life for setting it up!

Village Food in West Africa - BEST FUFU and EXTREME Hospitality in Rural Ghana!

This was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had!

Many thanks to Afia Tours ( for taking on this amazing village food day trip in Ghana (Note: I paid for this tour, it is not sponsored, but I fully recommend it - it was awesome)!

It was about a three hour drive from Accra to get to the village. The village was somewhere in the central Cape Coast region of Ghana (however no near to the coast, but much inland). The people from the village were so incredibly friendly, and it was one of the most genuinely hospitable and friendly villages I’ve ever visited. It was an honor and privilege to spend time at the village.

As we arrived, they had already started cooking some Ghanaian food specialties. One the menu, we had banku with okra soup, fufu (a staple of West African food) with palm nut soup, and finally fried plantains with beans. All the food was incredibly good, and it was one of the best bowls of fufu I ate during my entire time in Ghana.

Thanks again to Afia Tours ( for setting this up!

Welcome to Kigali, Rwanda! Kigali is an amazing city, so clean and organized, and it was a joy to have a chance to walk around, eat, and explore the city. In this video, along with the help of Georgie and Makeda, we’re taking you on an amazing Rwandan food tour of Kigali!

La Gardienne Supermarket - We started off at La Gardienne Supermarket, a small supermarket known for preparing some of the best samosas in all of Kigali. They were delicious, especially the meat samosa. Samosas are very common throughout East Africa because of the Indian and Arabian influence.

Green Corner - Next we went to a restaurant in Kigali called Green Corner, this is one of my favorite restaurants in Kigali. They specialized in grilled meats, especially grilled fish - giant freshwater tilapia. The fish was the highlight of the meal, but the grilled chicken was also pretty amazing. A great restaurant to eat Rwandan food.
Total price - 50,000 RWF ($57.10)

Piano Bar - Next we went to a local restaurant called Piano Bar, not far from Green Corner, to eat one main dish: Akabenz - A Rwandan food known to be the Mercedes Benz of meat! It’s a Rwandan pork dish, fried with onions and served with chili. It’s pretty amazing, and if you enjoy pork, you don’t want to miss it when you’re in Kigali, Rwanda.
Total price - 10,700 RWF ($12.22)

Resto Bamako - Next we went to a restaurant serving Malian food, but also Rwandan food. Their pilau rice and especially their isombe (cassava leaves) were fantastic.
Total price - 4,000 RWF ($4.57)

Chap Chap Food - One of the last food stops was Chap Chap Bar, a small Rwandan local fast food restaurant serving all sorts of snacks. We enjoyed a Rolex, which is actually a Ugandan chapati topped with an egg.
Total price - 4,500 RWF ($5.14)

Ikivuguto - Finally to end the main part of this Rwandan food tour, we couldn't not stop at a milk bar. We had a beverage called Ikivuguto, a fermented milk drink, kind of like thin yoghurt.

Chez Lando - Although it was the next day, I couldn’t have a Rwandan food tour without trying some brochettes, which is one of the national foods of Rwanda.
Total price - 5,100 RWF ($5.82)

Again, huge thank you to Georgie and Makeda for taking me around!

Village Food in East Africa - FREE-RANGE KFC (Kenya FRIED CHICKEN) Kenyan Food in Machakos!

I met up with my friend Bramuel who took us to his farm and house (in the process of being built) in Machakos, Kenya. It was about a 2 hour drive to get there, but along the way we first stopped in Machakos town to eat, and then continued on to the farm. At the farm, we were treated to a fresh chicken and rabbit from the farm, and they cooked both dry and wet fry - classic Kenyan meat preparation. Also, the sukuma wiki was excellent.

Machakos, Kenya - TTOT Hotel - So first, along the way in this village food tour of Kenya, we stopped in Machakos. The mix of green maize and peas and delicious, along with beef stew. The beef stew was especially good with a sprinkle of lemon juice and pili pili (chili).
Total price - 3,000 KES ($29.61) for all

We arrived to Bramuel’s house in the countryside, way off the beaten path. And they immediately got started on our meal. They butched the chicken and rabbit, and we saw the entire process from start to finish of the meal. Along with dry fried chicken and rabbit wet fry, we also had a big pot of sukuma wiki, one of the best and most commonly eaten vegetables in Kenyan food, and ugali (ugali is made from maize meal, and is one of the most commonly eaten starches in Kenya). Everything was delicious, and I especially enjoyed the kachumbari, which was like Kenyan guacamole, to eat with all the meat.

Thank you to everyone who cooked and helped in this video, and thank you to Braumuel for inviting us over to his home.

Thank you for watching!

Rwanda - Rwandese market - you can't get it more African!

When we drove from Akagera N.P. in Rwanda to capital Kigali we stumbled upon this local market. It is as African as you can get it: friendly, colorful, noisy and many, many bananas.

We visited Rwanda on our overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa and South America; see our channel for hundreds of clips. Many more markets are shown in our Markets playlist:

Muslim prayer ritual, West Africa village

A minority people group in West Africa perform the Muslim prayer ritual. The Arabic phrase Allah akbar - God is the greatest or God is greater - is called out repeatedly. It is not a prayer to God, but a prayer which says something about God. To these people the performance of this prayer ritual is the most important key to obtaining good merit, which it is hoped God will take into account, and as a result forgive sins. It is said by them to erase sins such as lying, stealing, adultery, etc.

Shocking: Kigali, Rwanda's WORST Slum

With a name that translates to a place to poop, Bannyahe is the most notorious slum in Kigali, Rwanda. But it isn't as terrible as the name suggests -- in fact, it is beautiful in its own unique way.

Join me on this 4k video walking tour of Bannyahe, Rwanda's worst slum. And if you want more content like this, be sure to subscribe to the Willie Fungo YouTube channel.

Zambian Village Life

While there are a lot of photos floating around of African people, especially African children I've always found that the vast majority of these photos are usually all pretty similar and tell very little about the day-to-days of village life.

During a recent trip to sub-saharan Africa, we had the rare opportunity to spend 6 days in and around my brother's village. David or Nate as I refer to him in the video is about 1/4 of the way through the 2nd year of his deployment with the US Peace Corps - an amazing aid and cultural exchange program through the US Government.

This footage was shot in and around the Luapula Province of northern Zambia and features footage from the area around Chisunka. The lake footage is from Samfya.

I really encourage you all to read David's blogs about his experiences over at and if you're unfamiliar with the US Peace Corps to learn more here:

Video was shot on a Canon 600D/T3i (18-135mm lens) and a Canon Vixia HF200.
