We hopped onto a 3 day 2 night luxury cruise through what is long as Bai Tu Long bay. A majestic area in the north of Vietnam where only magic happens. As most tourists go to Ha Long Bay, we decided to go to a lesser known area of Ha Long Bay where you get to experience a more relaxing cruise on our ship known as the Dragon Legend.
On this cruise, we ate like kings as every meal was 5 coarses but the food was absolutely to die for, and I am being 100% honest when saying this. Our hosts were comedians and kept us entertained every step of the way. Even during the little activities we had during the day, they never stopped smiling and could see that they absolutely loved their job.

A South East Asian Odyssey - Ha Long, Vietnam Part 2
While the application for permission to bring the car into Vietnam was with the Ministry of Transportation and would take at least a day to process, Elvis D'cruz, my friend and former colleague, and I scheduled a visit to the Ha Long Bay. Rain and foul weather, we thought, will play spoilsport with the plans. It remained cloudy and misty right through the day, but the memorable guided trip to Ha Long Bay will remain fresh forever in our minds.
Nick, the ‘English’ name by which the tour guide introduced himself, was a lively 24 year old, or so he claimed. He gave us a brief roundup of the history of Vietnam and that of Ha Long Bay. He told us how the country had been under Chinese dominion for nearly 1000 years, how they got their independence, the fights they had with their neighbours, the North South war, the horrendous war with the US and the one with China in 1978. He said that all this may give the feeling that the Vietnamese are a country of war mongers, but actually all the wars have been only to defend their positions. 80 per cent of the people depend on agriculture in some form – the vast rice fields and vegetable cultivation on the way to Ha Long Bay reinforced this. People even subsist on $50 a month by selling their farm produce on the streets and roads frequented by tourists. Buddhism and atheism are the major belief systems among the people. Nick said that honking was acceptable as the mobikers did not where they were going or where they are coming from – of course, an exaggeration to illustrate the chaos on the roads.
Ha Long Bay is over 165 km from Hanoi city centre and takes about four hours to get to. However, the nuggets of information and steady humour kept the group engaged on the road trip. While in the Bay and the wooden boat the stunning sights of the limestone karsts, caves and lakes formed in islets astounded us. This trip has got embedded as one of the finest experiences of my life.
