University trip to Vanuatu: Part 1 Port Vila

University trip to Vanuatu Part 1 Port Vila

I was extremely lucky to be chosen as one of 15 students selected to go on a 'Climate Change in the Pacific' study tour in Vanuatu for university thanks to the New Colombo Plan.

We spent two weeks in Vanuatu: staying for one week on Port Vila and another week on Tanna. Throughout this time we were able to meet the locals, experience the culture and learn so much.

Vanuatu is honestly the best place I've ever visited. They've been voted by Lonely Planet as the happiest place on Earth, and have won the award twice! Not once did we meet an unfriendly person, and always were greeted with smiles.

The vlog focuses more on the 'free time' we had whilst on this trip; but I am aiming to upload 2 (or 3) more videos which focus on the study part of the tour. I decided to share this video as it showcases what you can do in Vanuatu as a tourist, where as my study videos showcase what you are able to see and do if you have connections with locals.

Part 1 (this video) focuses solely on our week in Port Vila and Part 2 will focus on the week in Tanna.

I was in Vanuatu from the 23rd of November till the 8th of October 2018.

I hope you all enjoyed this video,

until next time,
xox

Things to do in Vanuatu (with Rob's mum) | Port Vila, Vanuatu

For Rob's mum's milestone birthday, we flew her to Port Vila, Vanuatu, a beautiful little island in the South Pacific. It was a great way for her to get some warmth in the height of winter where she lives in Australia. Our favourite thing to do (aside from all the relaxing we did at Tamanu on the Beach) was this Tamanu tour. Our first stop on the tour was the Reef Zoological, which is a sanctuary for some endangered turtles and other animals native to Vanuatu.

WHO WE ARE
We are Nicole and Rob. Nicole was born in the Philippines and Rob in Australia, but through the magic of the internet we met each other more than a decade ago and eventually ended up getting married. We moved from Melbourne, Australia to Maastricht, the Netherlands two years ago, taking the leap across continents to see more of Europe. This vlog is primarily a way for us to document this special time in our lives, but it's great to have you along for the ride as well.

GEAR
We're still learning how to create content with the least amount of gear, so this is bound to change. Nicole is a bit of a gearhead, so she's always trying out new tech. Here's a list of cameras we use regularly, but we very rarely bring all of them on a trip.

DSLR: Canon 6D mark II (
DSLR lens: Canon 16-35mm f/4L (
STABILIZED CAMERA: DJI Osmo Pocket (
POINT AND SHOOT #1: RX100V (

360 CAMERA: Insta360 One X (
WEARABLE CAMERA: Insta360 Go (
MOBILES: Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ ( Note 8 ( S10 (
DRONES: DJI Mavic Mini ( DJI Spark (

Our vlogs have been a mix of all of these, and some are recent acquisitions. We change cameras all the time, depending on where we are, what we're doing, and how much space we had left in our backpacks. :)

Other non-camera gear:
AUDIO: Røde Wireless Go ( Røde Video Micro ( Blue Yeti (
TRIPOD: Switchpod ( Joby Griptight One micro ( Manfrotto 290 (

VLOG #17 - Vanuatu Island Life on Epi (Part 1)

On my 9-months-worldtrip I spent two weeks in Vanuatu to visit friends I met in 2013 on a farm in Australia (because people from Vanuatu often come there to work). In this video I take you to the island of Epi which is one of the eight main islands and show you how people live there. I felt in another world on Epi and this experience changed my view to the world. On one hand it is a paradise but on the other it is a hard life, too. People harvast their own food, go fishing and garding to feed their family. Everything else has to be imported for high costs. But the people are so happy with the little things they have and live completely independent. Read more in this blog article:
