Top 5 Things to Do Around Cancun Mexico (Excursions Outside the Resorts)

Top 5 Things to Do Around Cancun Mexico shows you great excursions in the Yucatan Peninsula around Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, and Merida. If you're looking for more than just beaches and resorts make sure to check out these top 5 Things to do around Cancun. First we start out in Chichen Itza, one of the seven wonders of the world. Next we head to Valladolid which is a great base to get a hotel and explore the surrounding areas. From here you can visit Chichen Itza, other ruins, and plenty of Cenotes. Our two favorite Cenotes being Cenote Suytun and Cenote Xcanahaltun. If you're up for a drive then head to the amazing town of Bacalar which we would argue is more beautiful than Cancun, Tulum, or Playa Del Carmen with out the touristy vibes. Here you can rent a boat on Lake Bacalar and travel to Los Rapidos. Last but not least we drove to the Archaeological Zone of Becán where we saw the most amazing Mayan Ruins. There are plenty of ruins closer to Cancun but we loved that you could climb up the pyramids here. Becan was completely empty and truly amazing to see!

7 Things to do in the GEM of the Yucatan! (Valladolid, Mexico Travel Guide)

We've spent the last 5+ weeks living in Valladolid, a small city city in the middle of the Yucatan Peninsula with just under 50k people. It's more than just a good stopping point between Cancun and Merida. It's known for it's rich Spanish colonial and Mayan history and architecture, and for being the perfect launching point for the Yucatan states most famous cenotes and ruins of ancient Mayan cities. In fact, there's dozens of cenotes surrounding Valladolid and Mayan archeological sites like Chichen Itza and Ek Balam are 30-45 minutes away.

The city itself is charming and photogenic and full of hidden gems. Just booking a place to stay is an adventure. There's beautiful hotels, hostels, guesthouses and Airbnb's, many of which are set in old colonial houses that have beautiful gardens and courtyards. On the more adventurous side you can camp at a Bee Park, or in the jungle inside of classic Volkswagen Beetle cars converted into small rooms. Yes, really.

Stores that sell hand-made hammocks, clothes and crafts line the streets and there are endless crafts makers setting up shop on the sidewalks and in pushcarts. The shopping is endless. The food scene is also incredible, with all of the Yucatan culinary staples being a stones throw from the city center. After you've had your fill of Yucatec cuisine, maybe never, try the street vendors selling things like sopas, tacos, quesadillas, and even hotdogs and hamburgers. Believe it or the not, the hotdogs and hamburgers are the best we've ever had, in the whole world! You won't miss out on much food wise, because even Italian food is super popular here. With more than a dozen pizza and Italian places in town!

Valladolid HAS to be on your list, it truly is the gem of the Yucatan and is so underrated. When you go, check out our top 7 things to do and let us know what your favorites are!

Valladolid, Mexico | Travel Guide 2021 | Things to eat, see, and do! | Calle De Los Frailes | Vlog

Travel Vlog #63 | Valladolid, Mexico
Welcome back to Valladolid, Mexico! We have another travel guide style vlog where we show you some of the best things to eat, see, and do in Valladolid! This city quickly became one of our favorites in Mexico because of the obvious culture, history, and food scene.
After visiting Cenote Zaci and one of the BEST restaurants we ate at in Mexico in the last video, we headed out into the city on a self-guided walking tour. This is one of the most walkable cities, and we actually didn't use any public transportation all day. We started our day out in our hotel eating our FREE breakfast! We really recommend Hotel Colonte Origin, everyone is extremely nice and accommodating, the rooms are beautiful, and you get an incredible free breakfast each morning.
After breakfast we headed out into the city to explore the park, the city market (Zaci), and the famous Calle de los Frailes, also known as 41A street! We loved how colorful and lively this area of the city is, and it reminded us a LOT of Burano in Italy. That's something we said a lot while we were in Valladolid - it reminds us a lot of walking through a European city with the architecture, walkability, and multitude of restaurants and shops. (There's even a Valladolid in Spain)
We spent a good amount of time in the Convent de San Bernardino enjoying how well preserved the convent was. There were so few people there, it felt like we had the place to ourselves! It was well worth the $2 to get in, and there is a lot of history that's well explained.
Right across from the convent is the most beautiful Mexico city sign we've seen yet! Each letter that makes up 'Valladolid' is intricately painted to depict a piece of the city and culture that's important to the people. We couldn't quit looking at it!
We stopped at Wabi Gelato to cool down, and this is a must-do dessert while in Valladolid! The gelato was perfectly made, and just contributed to our list of reasons why Valladolid reminds us so much of Europe.
We finally made our way to San Gervasio Cathedral in the heart of the city. The most interesting fact we learned about the cathedral: it doesn't point towards Rome like most of the places of worship in the Yucatan do.
We're ending this video with giving you one of our biggest money saving tips that's easy to overlook - never accept conversion rates at an ATM, and always use a real bank!
Thanks for watching, and make sure you subscribe to see what we do in Tulum!

Merida Mexico Vacation Guide - The Adventure Continues | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids

Join us as we continue our adventure in Merida Mexico!

One of the best destinations in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is Merida. With a great location full of history, beauty, and some of the most authentic and genuinely nicest people you can’t help but see why so many are falling in love with this city.

We also visited Progresso Beach which is about 20-30 minutes north of the city on the Gulf of Mexico.

Home to the longest pier in Mexico, this relaxed beach town has a laid-back vibe and gets packed with tourists enjoying the water and loads of restaurants serving fresh seafood .

You won’t want to miss The Gran Museo del Mundo Maya. Here you will learn all about Mayan history & culture.

Our next stop was the Santa Barbara Cenotes where we took a horse drawn railroad cart to the beautiful crystal blue water Cenotes.

Enjoy the video and please let us know where you're watching from!

Tulum Mexico Travel Guide - Top Things To See and Do | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids

Tulum is a breathtaking stretch of beach along Mexico’s eastern Yucatan coast and has a reputation as the ultimate place to come to unplug, relax and enjoy the cool vibes.

In contrast to the mega-resorts of neighboring Cancun and Playa del Carmen, the places to stay in Tulum are all eco-friendly and laid-back. You'll spend your days here eating fresh fish tacos, doing yoga overlooking the water, and reading on the beach.

The main draw is Tulum's gorgeous beach, one of the best in Mexico, plus the casual vibe of downtown—these two distinct areas, about a 20-minute bike ride apart, are where you'll spend all your time. Tulum has several things to see, from the historic Tulum ruins to the beautiful Cenotes. There are also world-class shops and restaurants and ita a short drive away to visit the Mexican theme parks such as Xplor, Xcaret, Xsenses and Xel Ha.

You may be wondering if Tulum is still worth visiting despite all the Sargassum seaweed on the beaches you may have heard about on the news and the answer is absolutely yes!!!

Here’s the link to the beautiful Boho Residence where we stayed:

Enjoy the video and be sure to let us know where you’re watching from!

Zona Arqueológica de Cobá homes the ancient Mayan ruins in Coba, Quintana Roo, Mexico. This travel hotspot holds the largest network of stone causeways of the Mayans. Visitors can find many engraved and sculptured stelae which document events and important figures in the Late Classic Period of Mesoamerican civilization. This is one of the best things to do in Coba, and it’s rich with history and intriguing sights. You can take a guided tour when you’re there, but I just took bike and ventured into the site myself. First Impressions of Valladolid ???????? Pueblo Mágico! Mexico

First Impressions of Valladolid ???????? Pueblo Magico! Mexico (We left Playa Del Carmen)

Well guys & girls, we left Playa Del Carmen today!
We made our way to beautiful Valladolid, and in this travel vlog we give you our first impressions of magical city itself ..PUEBLO MAGICO!

To get from Playa Del Carmen to Valladolid, we used a company called ADO and it is the fastest and most reliable way that we have found to get around Yucatan and to go between cities in general.

This is their website!

Key points about Valladolid :
Valladolid is a city on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Its colonial buildings include 16th-century Convent of San Bernardino of Siena, with an ornate wooden altarpiece, and baroque-style San Gervasio Cathedral.
Casa de los Venados has Mexican folk art and furnishings.
Cenote Zací is a sinkhole pool with stalactites.
The underground cenotes of Samulá and X'Kekén lie southwest.
Further west is the Mayan site Chichén Itzá.

Cenotes close to Valladolid :
Cenote Zaci
Suytun Cenote
Cenote Xkeken
Cenote Samula
Cenote Maya Park

Our thoughts on Valladolid so far :
Valladolid is a cute, small and colourful place! Filled with amazing sites to see and the people are so kind and warm.
We will be here for one more full day before head to our next destination.

We hope you enjoy this Travel vlog guys!
Many more to come in the near future for you :D

Exploring Valladolid in Yucatan, Mexico

The town of Valladolid is located in the Yucatan state of Mexico, about two hours from Cancun. It's on the list of Pueblos Magicos, program launched by the Mexican government to promote Magical Towns.

I was there for one day, taking in the beautiful scenery (lots of Instagram-worthy spots by the way!), tasted the best guacamole I've had in a while, swam in a cenote, and discovered some really tasty treats, like Tostielotes and Marquesitas. Yum!

If you want to practice your French and get more information about what we did, you can check out my friend's blog post here:

If you want to try out the amazing guacamole (not a paid ad, I just really liked it): Yutzil Cafe Boutique

Valladolid Mexico Travel Guide - Chichen Itza & Coba Mayan Ruins | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids

Welcome to Valladolid, named after Valladolid at the time the capital of Spain. It is a city located in the eastern part of the Mexican state of Yucatán.Valladolid is located approximately 160 km east of the state capital Mérida, 40 km east of Chichen Itza, and 150 km west of Cancun.

Valladolid is a popular base for visiting nearby major Mayan ruins such as Chichen Itza and Ek' Balam, as well as Cenote Ik Kil.

There is a bus terminal situated in the heart of the city which serves to the travellers going to all mayor cities in the Yucatan peninsula, such as Mérida, Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum as well as archeological sites such as Chichen Itza Coba and Ek' Balam.

We stayed at Casa Hamaca Guesthouse. Everything was amazing from the food to the decor and the gardens!

Valladolid - is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Valladolid.

Visiting VALLADOLID IN YUCATAN with our kids - Family Travel Vlog

Our adventures exploring Mexico started in Valladolid! This city is located in the middle of the Yucatan Peninsula. Valladolid was elected Pueblo Magico (Magic Town) in 2012. Its colorful houses and haciendas make this colonial city one of the most iconic of the Peninsula.

Many tours stop in Valladolid for a short visit on the way back from the Maya ruins and the cenotes. We decided to spend a few days here, take our time and enjoy this city. The most challenging aspect of it though was the heat! Especially with three kids. Luckily we were staying in the downtown area so it was easy to explore and then jump in the pool!

The main place to visit is the main plaza Parque Principal Francisco Cantón Rosado. In the late afternoon, it comes to life with people sitting in the very original chairs chatting, or simply walking around and stopping at the many food stalls. While there, make sure you try the famous marquesitas at Tio Batman's, they are delicious! If you are vegan, there are plenty of options as well, although our favorite was Café del Profesor Pitágoras, with great juices and amazing food!

Valladolid is also a great place to stay when planning to visit Chichen Itza ruins or some of the cenotes in the area. Actually, Zaci cenote is right in town!
We hope you enjoy our tour of Valladolid!!!

Valladolid - Mexico's Hidden Gem in the Yucatan

Even though Cancun remains a perpetually packed spring break destination, and even as Tulum beach has recently soared in popularity, there is one hidden gem that 98% of tourists to the Yucatan totally forget about:

Valladolid, Mexico.

This hidden gem is my favorite absolute destination in Mexico and Valladolid has largely remained a secret.

Until now.

Valladolid Mexico recently won the 2019 Travel Lemming Reader Choice Award for North America - and it's not hard to see why.

From authentic Mayan culture, to proximity to the ruins of Chichen Itza, to a vibrant food scene, and easy access to incredible cenotes, there are so many reasons to visit Valladolid Mexico!

MEXICO'S CHICHÉN ITZÁ & VALLADOLID

We visited one of the Wonders of the World: El Templo de Kukulkan at Chichén Itzá, Mexico. It was our introduction to Mayan history and culture. We saw many temples, places of study, and ritual sites. It was also one of the hottest days we experienced in Mexico but the experience was unforgettable.
