???????? Liechtenstein medieval castles - Vaduz & Balzers

Liechtenstein is a tiny (160 km² / 62 mi²) country between Switzerland and Austria but despite its size, it has plenty of charm with its majestic mountains and medieval castles dating back to 12th century. Liechtenstein is also a perfect stopover place if you are driving between Switzerland and Austria.

Gutenberg Castle is an intact castle in the town of Balzers, Liechtenstein, in the centre of the municipality of Balzers, the southern-most municipality in the country. Gutenberg is one of the five castles of the principality and one of two that have survived intact until the present day. The bailey is open to visitors free of charge throughout the whole year. The castle chapel and rose garden are open to visitors free of charge every Sunday from 10.00 a.m. until 5.00 p.m. between 1 May and 31 October.

Vaduz Castle is the palace and official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein. The castle gave its name to the town of Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, which it overlooks from an adjacent hilltop. Note that Vaduz castle is a private area and therefore cannot be visited, also flying drone near Vaduz is prohibited.

Vaduz, Liechtenstein in 3 minutes - Travel Cubed [4K]

Vaduz - is the capital of Liechtenstein and also the seat of the national parliament. The city, which is located along the Rhine River, has 5,696 residents. The most prominent landmark of Vaduz is Vaduz Castle, being perched atop a steep hill in the middle of the city. It is home to the reigning Prince of Liechtenstein and the Liechtenstein princely family. The city's distinctive architecture is also displayed in landmarks such as the Cathedral of St. Florin, Government House, City Hall, the National Art Gallery, as well as the National Museum. Although Vaduz is the best-known town in the principality internationally, it is not the largest; neighboring Schaan has a larger population.

Liechtenstein is one of the smallest countries in Europe and located in between Switzerland and Austria in the Alps. The capital city of Liechtenstein is Vaduz and is situated close to the Rhein river and the Alps. Vaduz offers a true fairy-tale view with its beautiful mountains and castles.

I recently had the chance to travel to Vaduz and explored the city with my drone. If you are traveling through Europe and especially Switzerland, Liechtenstein should be on your list. Due to its size it can easily be done in a day.

Todays video is a day trip I took to Vaduz Castle in Liechtenstein early this year. Even though we were not able to go inside of the castle it was still pretty cool to get some drone footage of it. I came across a trip on Eurotrip Adventures that was a pretty good deal and I just couldn't pass. Its always pretty fun being able to fly the drone around especially in a different country ...but yea enjoy this video and let know what you think

Everybody knows Vaduz Castle but we have another one worth a visit: Gutenberg castle #liechtenstein

Perched on a hillside in the country's southernmost municipality, Balzers, Gutenberg Castle was built in the High Middle Ages.

The castle stands about 70m above the nearby village, on a hill which has been inhabited since the Neolithic Period. Indeed, many interesting archaeological discoveries have been made near the building, the most significant of which - the 'Mars von Gutenberg' figurine measuring just 12cm - is on display in the Liechtenstein National Museum.

The castle itself may have been built in the 12th century. It was inhabited until the 18th century. After that the building fell into ruin before being rebuilt between 1905 and 1912. Visitors can walk to the castle from the nearby village, and the bailey ('Vorburg') is open throughout the year. Since opening in 2010, the chapel and rose garden welcome visitors from 1 May until 31 October every Sunday between 10.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. A number of cultural events and activities take place at the castle during the summer months.

Die Burg Gutenberg ist eine gut sichtbare hochmittelalterliche Burg in der südlichsten Gemeinde des Landes, in Balzers.

Auf dem etwa 70 m hohen Burghügel mitten in Balzers liegt die Burg Gutenberg. Der Burghügel ist seit der Jungsteinzeit besiedelt und die bedeutendsten archäologischen Funde, darunter der 12 cm grosse Mars von Gutenberg, sind im Liechtensteinischen LandesMuseum zu besichtigen.

Die Burg selbst dürfte im 12. Jahrhundert errichtet worden sein. Bis ins 18. Jahrhundert war sie bewohnt. Danach verkam sie zur Ruine und wurde von 1905 bis 1912 wieder aufgebaut. Nach einem gemütlichen Spaziergang zur Burg kann man die Vorburg ganzjährig besichtigen. Die Burgkapelle und der Rosengarten sind seit 2010 während der Burgsaison jeweils sonntags von 10-17 Uhr zu besichtigen. Im Sommer wird auf der Burg ein interessantes Kulturprogramm angeboten.
