After a long 16 weeks of this VAN LIFE BUILD project, we are living in our 170 Sprinter Campervan and are readjusting to tiny living! We are beyond thrilled to have a functioning INDOOR shower in this space and the fact that we have HOT WATER is the absolute cherry on top... but of course, none of this comes without a leak or two ???? We also tackle the finishing details that will make this home last!

How Did We Get Here?
Abandoning our Van in Africa
After an incredible 3 years of living, working, and traveling in our self converted Sprinter Van we made the very tough decision to abandon it in Africa to take a rescue flight back to Canada. As it has for all of us this global pandemic has flipped our world upside down. When our Prime Minister announced that he was sending repatriation flights over to Africa to pick up Canadians who were stuck (due to border closures) we consulted with friends and family closest to us and realized that in this time of crisis we should be back in our home country. Halting our dream of driving around the world was a hard pill to swallow which is why we knew we needed a big project to keep our mind + body busy while social distancing back here in Toronto. Enter building an off-grid tiny house on wheels!! This is going to be our 3rd time converting an empty cargo van into a campervan and we are both excited and nervous to take on this project. We want this build to be the ULTIMATE OFF-GRID VAN ????

Now that our van is insulated, wired, framed and painted we are moving forward with the challenging task of building the cabinet faces and finishing the trim work around the kitchen and pantry area. And with only 1 more week left in our AirBnB it's crunch time to get this 82 sq-ft home in a liveable, working condition!

After a long 4 months of this VAN LIFE BUILD project we finally have enough electricity, water and other essentials in place to put our new tiny home on wheels to the off-grid test. We head 3 hours north of Toronto to explore some of Canada's most stunning wilderness. But, of course, van life has it's highs and lows, and relearning how to find stealth camping spots presents us with our first van challenge. Sorry again to the kind gentleman who we accidentally trespassed on his property ????. We then realize our electrical system really isn't complete without our solar panels and we're limited on how long we can camp out off-grid. No one say van life is easy but nothing good comes easy... amiright?

After a long 10 weeks of this Sprinter Van Conversion project, we are beginning to tie it all together with some decor and cabinetry! Now that our van is insulated, wired, framed and painted we are moving forward with the challenging task of building out our van life kitchen. We begin the week with receiving our beautiful walnut countertops, install our sink and stove and build a few drawers for under the main counter.

Last week we drove our new tiny home on wheels north to begin putting our off-grid capabilities to the test. So, naturally ????, we decided that for our second trip in the van we ought to put the capacity limits to the test too. While our 170 sprinter van has seemed like plenty of room (almost too much room!) for the two of us, this week will prove just how comfy the new layout is when we add a 3rd human and a medium-sized dog!!! We all travel towards Tobermory and Manitoulin Island (living, traveling, sleeping, cooking & POOPING ???? in 1 van). Could you live in such tight quarters with two other people and a dog?!

After a long 4 months of this VAN LIFE BUILD project we finally have enough electricity, water and other essentials in place to put our new tiny home on wheels to the off-grid test. We head 4 hours north of Toronto to explore some of Canada's most stunning wilderness with one of our very best friend's Lee and her dog Occy! The adventure begins with a hike along the Bruce Peninsula at Lion's Head where we get lost and nearly don't make it back to camp! Luckily the @Vanwives were there to save the day ???? . The crew then heads towards Manitoulin Island where we learn the hard lesson that things aren't as free and open as they were before COVID. Readjusting to tiny living isn't so bad when you're in such great company! All this and more in this week's van life vlog!

We cannot wait to have a place to call our own!! We are SO close and cannot believe what a whirlwind of a week this has been. Which property do you think we put an offer on and where would YOU love to build a tiny home?!

Before starting our conversion we had absolutely no DIY skills, no plumbing skills and definitely no electrical skills. I’m proud to say, we’ve learnt a lot. The best thing about building everything yourself is when something breaks, you know how to fix it.

This is so weird, seeing 4 months of our life in 20 minuets. If you’ve built out a van before you’ll know that it completely takes over every aspect of your life. Our actual blood, sweat and tears are embedded into each layer of this metal tin with wheels that we now call home.

If you have any questions about anything in this video please leave a comment below and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Now that our van is complete, subscribe to join us for adventures all around Europe and the UK where we’ll be talking about the best free campsites, van life hacks and much more! We are so grateful for your support :)

If you saw something in this video that you quite liked the look of, we probably have a step by step video on how to make it.

We finally see a light at the end of the tunnel as our build starts to take shape. What started as a 4 week build ends up taking 8 weeks. Thanks polar blast!

We started off our build planning to vlog everything but that didn't quite work out. We've decided to upload the videos anyway. We'll be releasing videos over the coming months that delve further into aspects of our build like electricity and plumbing.

Our Story
Life is crazy! The tide smashes even the best-laid plans to sand… and so it goes!
This is a story about two people, who met by chance, were bound by fate and who continue to let the quirky side of life guide their paths! How else could a young man from a tiny town in Albania and a farm girl from the mountains of Montana meet in the middle, with a life guided by adventure?
We met in Rome. Engjell was a waiter in a little Roman restaurant down by Trevi Fountain and I was a student abroad, spending a year in the Eternal City. There are some pretty cheesy movies about the giggly American girl meeting the handsome foreigner abroad, who then spend all their time bombing around ancient ruins on a shiny moped, hair blowing in the wind and smiles from ear to ear. And yet… serendipity delivers! We did fall in love and he did have a moped…
In 2006, we moved back to the United States. We returned as a family of three, as little Fiona had been born in Rome at FateBeneFratelli, the hospital on an island… where all the Roman babies have been born for centuries! We moved often, looking for the perfect place. In 2010, we found an opportunity to open our own restaurant in Bigfork, Montana. We spent seven years and thousands of hours bringing the flavors of Italy to rural Montana. We were doing well! We were successful and busy and had finally bought our own home… we had a mortgage and car payments and a full-time, ultra-demanding job! We opened a second restaurant! We even added two more family members with the addition of Hugo and Remy!
We were living the dream! Or were we? On the outside, it looked like we had it all… that success had reached out its hand and we had graciously accepted. But in reality, we were working 80-100 hours each per week, we rarely saw our three beautiful kids who knew the nanny better than they did us, and we were burned out… from too much work, from too little time spent together as a family, from life! We had bought into the well-oiled idea of success and were realizing quickly the fatal flaws in our plan.
So we decided, together, to give it all up! We took the giant, terrifying, leap and sold it all to travel on a shoestring budget and let life teach us again, teach us anew, of what it looks like to be a successful human being! We are just beginning on this wonderful adventure! We have been traveling the U.S. for a year as a family in a motorhome. We are every day astounded by the diversity and creativity of both humans and Mother Nature. In July, we will set off for a one year trip around the world!
This time, too, food and wine lead our adventure. We hope to dig deep into every culture as we go, unearthing culinary tradition everywhere we go! We plan to travel to places where we can stage and work in restaurants and vineyards to learn more and to ultimately be able to take what we have learned and start fresh…inspired, changed… wherever we end up.
This trip is about re-defining success! It is about food and wine…about a plate of pasta or a shared bottle of wine, about experiences! It is about family and figuring out how we all fit together and what life’s REAL plan for us is! We invite you to join us in this crazy adventure as we travel the world!
Engjell, Kaleigh, Fiona, Hugo and Remy

Traveling is embedded into our relationship as we met on a Spring Break cruise in 2016. Since then, we haven't stopped traveling together in the United States and abroad. We left New York in July 2019 to travel the world and we took work with us, including starting a travel vlog. We have made it our mission to slow travel for 16 months throughout South America and Asia and to create travel videos along the way.

Due to the pandemic, we changed course and bought a van to convert into a campervan (#vanlife) to travel to all 50 National Parks in the lower 48 states (excluding Hawaii and Alaska) before Christmas. We are Brandon and Erin, follow the journey and stay tuned.
