Happy First year Anniversary of 12636/12635 Madurai - Chennai Egmore - Madurai Vaigai Superfast Express with LHB (LINKE HOFMANN BUSCH) Coaches..!!

Here I present compilation of Vaigai Express with LHB Coaches captured at various locations.

Here I'll attach last year video of Vaigai express first LHB Run (Full video)

About LHB Coaches:

Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches are the passenger coaches of Indian Railways that have been developed by Linke-Hofmann-Busch of Germany (renamed Alstom LHB GmbH in 1998 after the takeover by Alstom) and mostly produced by Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, India. They have been used since 2000 on the broad gauge (1676 mm) network of Indian railways. Initially, 24 air conditioned coaches were imported from Germany for use in the Shatabdi Expresses, after which the Rail Coach Factory started manufacturing after technology transfer.

The coaches are designed for an operating speed up to 160 km/h and could go up to 200 km/h. However, they have been tested up to 180 km/h. Their length of 23.54 m and a width of 3.24 m means a higher passenger capacity, compared to conventional rakes. The tare weight of the AC chair car was weighed as 39.5 tonnes. They are considered to be anti-telescopic, which means they do not get turned over or flip in case of a collision (chiefly head-on). These coaches are made of stainless steel and the interiors are made of aluminium which make them lighter as compared to conventional rakes. Each coach also has an advanced pneumatic disc brake system for efficient braking at higher speeds, modular interiors that integrate lighting into ceiling and luggage racks with wider windows. The improved suspension system of LHB coaches ensures more riding comfort for the passengers compared to conventional rakes. The air conditioning system of the LHB coaches is of higher capacity compared to the older rakes and is controlled by a microprocessor which is said to give passengers better comfort than the older coaches during summer and winter seasons. They are relatively quieter as each coach produces a maximum noise level of 60 decibels while conventional coaches can produce 100 decibels.

Each LHB coach costs between ₹ 15 million to 20 million, whereas the power car which houses a generator costs about 30 million. In 2016, IR declared that all ICF coaches will be replaced by LHB coaches to provide more safety and comfort. On 19 January 2018, the last ICF Coach was flagged off making way for the LHB Coaches to be used for most of the new coaches introduced in Indian Railways.

Legendary Vaigai Express Celebrating 42nd Birthday in Style | Decorated WAP7 and LHB Coaches

42nd Anniversary as Vaigai Express steps into its 43rd year of service connecting Chennai and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

The Vaigai Express is a super fast Intercity express train running daily between Madurai and Chennai via Tiruchirappalli operated by Southern Railway zone of the Indian railways. The name 'Vaigai Express' has been always popular among not only rail users but also among rail fans of two different generations as the train has won the hearts of thousands of people who have known and experienced it from the early days. Due to the demand for a day train between Madurai and Madras, which gradually began to increase from the 1970s, the Southern Railway decided to introduce a super fast train for the first time on the MG in Southern railway. This train got updated with modern LHB coaches from 30 June 2019.

On 15 August 1977 at 6 am, Down Train No. 135 Vaigai Express began its inaugural journey from Madurai to Madras Egmore, with 16 yellow and green livery coaches and a matching YDM4 diesel loco. When it was introduced in 1977, this train had 16 coaches, hauled by twin-YDM4 diesel locos, and by 1984 it was bifurcated as the Pallavan Express, comprising eight coaches. The Vaigai express clocked the fastest run between Madurai and Madras Egmore over a distance of 497 kilometres (309 mi) on the first day in 7 hours and 5 minutes when it entered Madras Egmore at 1.05 p.m. that afternoon, matching the speed of many Broad Gauge super fast trains on the SR. For safety purposes the train, was slowed down to a journey time of 7 hours and 40 minutes later on. It was the only train in SR which had completely tube lighted interiors and sun control sliding glass shutters installed for the first time in all its eight-second class coaches. The driver and the guard also had a corded telephone system to communicate. With the turntable facility available at Trichy, Chennai and Madurai, the operations staff always ensured that the YDM4 hauling the Vaigai Express always had the short hood facing the front every time its started it journey.

This train also was one of its kind in SR which had its livery changed a number of times from its original yellow-green combination to white-gray-red livery and then again to vermillon red - cream livery and again to cream-brown livery on the MG. The YDM4 for the Vaigai Express had been fitted with a double-tone horn which made it easy for rail users and railway staff alike to identify the loco as well as the train, which was never on use on the other YDM4s which operated on the same route for other trains. This the only MG train on the SR to be fitted with specially enhanced buffers and certified to run at 110 km/h. For the first time on the MG, the ICF manufactured two 40-seat AC chair car coaches exclusively for the Vaigai and Pallavan express. From 12 February 2014, the Vaigai Express is being hauled by electric locomotive WAP-4 from Arakkonam & Erode Loco Shed & WAP-7 from Royapuram Loco Shed from Madurai to Chennai Egmore.

The Pallavan Express was introduced to run parallel to the Vaigai Express, which could not complete the round trip between Madurai and Chennai. The express was initially introduced between Chennai and Trichy on 15 August 1984. Later, it was extended till Karaikudi, effective from 1 September 2013. The express along with Vaigai express serves as fastest public commutation mode between Chennai and Trichy apart from air. The Express makes the 426 kilometres (265 mi) run in 7.15 hours with only 13 stops.

Except for putting the clips together, nothing really was done by me for this video and credit goes to all my friends for helping me with this.

Finally, the actual videos of Pallavan and Vaigai were clicked by Kishore who actually took an effort on a Sunday to capture these for me as I was slogging at work in Coimbatore struggling to achieve my monthly target which I eventually did by the end of the day.

As I was returning from a temple in the village nearby, the gates were closed at the Level Crossing. Given the time, I knew the Madurai bound 12635 Vaigai Express would have reached Chengalpattu. Yet, it seemed too early to close the gates already.

Surprisingly, the Chennai bound 12636 Vaigai Superfast, which was more than an hour late, went past accelerating towards Chengalpattu. The gates didn't open and I knew the other Vaigai was coming. In a few minutes, the Madurai bound Vaigai Express thrashed the LC at more than 100 kmph on its way towards Villupuram
