Siab Bazaar, Samarkand:
Visiting Samarkand and not paying a visit to Siab market means missing one of the most interesting adventures. The oriental market is a special place where you can feel a live atmosphere of the ancient city. Many years ago, bazaars served as the main strategic points on the Great Silk Road trade development. Siab Bazaar in Samarkand is one of the most interesting and ancient must see sights.
Peculiarities of the Siab Bazaar
Siab market is conveniently located, with the great mosque of Bibi-Khanim in only few minutes’ walk away. There is another landmark not far from the bazaar – Hazrat Khizir Mosque. The area of the market impresses with its 5 ha of trade rows. The main entrance is done in the form of a lofty three-fold arch adorned with blue mosaic. Trading rows are under tents that protect the bazaar from a burning sun in summer and from wind and rain in winter.Siab Bazaar is a dekhkan (agricultural) market; there you will mainly find vegetables and fruits grown in Uzbekistan, as well as local hand-made products. Trading rows are conditionally divided according to types of goods. Local sellers say that Siab dried fruits, sweets and nuts are so tasty that make residents of the capital city travel there for their portion. It is also possible to meet huge number and kinds of spices at the bazaar, even the rare ones. Apart from the edible products, you can buy pieces from local artisans and masters.
Special attention should be given to a bread row, as Samarkand bread is a special sort of local flour product. You can see more than 17 kinds of bread at the Siab market.
What is an oriental market without tasting?! there, as in any other bazaar, kind-hearted vendors will not only allow you to taste the product before purchasing, but will also insist on it. Surely, the main subtlety of the oriental bazaar is a bargaining tradition. Each buyer has a duty to trade with the seller before a purchase. The point is not about reducing the price, rather a habit that Asian dwellers have formed from the childhood. The one who shows the talent will gain in the end.
Except fresh and various goods, Siab market in Samarkand has another feature – this is the place where you can find out the latest news and events happening in the city. Uzbek people are very sociable and people get involved in conversations even with strangers. After visiting this bazaar, you will dive into the atmosphere of Samarkand festivity, mystery and will be able to understand the historical city on the Great Silk road. Along with ripen fruits and hot bread; you will take with yourself a piece of oriental atmosphere that will stay with you forever.

Amazing UZBEKISTAN KEBABS! + Farmers Market Tour | Samarkand, Uzbekistan

As my adventures in the ancient city of Samarkand continued, I headed out to tour an incredible local farmers market and tried some amazing Uzbekistan kebabs! Come along with me as I continue exploring this beautiful Silk Road city!

Siyob Bazaar sells lots of fresh local produce like watermelon, corn, vegetable dishes, figs, and more. There was also lots of bread!

I tried a fig, some grapes, and another fig. I loved how fresh the last fig was!

Next, I came across lots of plastic household items like buckets and containers. No one in the market wanted to be on-camera. Then I found vendors selling newspapers, more grapes, peaches, raisins, and figs. This bazaar was never-ending!

There was a vendor selling what had to have been hundreds of watermelons! I’d never seen a mountain of watermelon like it!

I continued through the labyrinthine bazaar toward the second level. On the way, I tried a super sweet blackberry and some fresh blackberry juice. It was so sweet and pure! It cost 10 som, or about $1 USD.

I came across a woman selling some beautiful hand-knitted hats. I bought one for 50,000 som, or about $5 USD. It makes a great souvenir!

In the sweets section, I saw rock candy, as well as a big, round sweet in the shape of bread. I tried some nutty, dense, and sweet yogurt that reminded me of Indian halwa.

Next, I saw a type of sweet wedding bread that smelled amazing. I noticed that a lot of the Uzbek bazaars were very similar and sold a lot of similar things. This bazaar didn’t sell any meat like others I had visited, though.

Next door to Siyob Bazaar is the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, which was built between 1399 and 1444. It was the biggest mosque in Central Asia at the time. Ninety-five elephants were used to built it!

The mosque was absolutely enormous and contained a large courtyard! I hadn’t seen one that big in years. The gate was massive and the entire building was a true work of art. It contains lots of blue and white. The craftmanship to build it was incredible. As is the case with all mosques, there is Arabic scripture on the walls.

Through a wooden gate, I could also see the ruins of the old mosque. From there, my guide and I passed by the grave of Uzbekistan’s first president, Islam Karimov, on our way to view the sunset. It’s right across from the mosque and bazaar. We couldn’t take photos of his marble grave, which follows in the traditions of Uzbek architecture.

From our spot, we viewed the sunset and had an epic view of the city, bazaar, the mosque, and the mountains and neighborhoods. Next, we went to go eat at Samarkand’s most famous kebab restaurant, Ikrom Choyxonasi.

There were 22 different types in total! I decided to get a bunch of different types of amazing Uzbekistan kebabs. I was hungry!

I started with some smooth Uzbek vodka, followed by cucumber, onion, and tomato and mint salad. The tomatoes are out of this world! They’re juicy and crunchy.

Next was fluffy, fresh Uzbek bread, which I added tomatoes to like bruschetta!

We ordered 5 amazing Uzbekistan kebabs: sheep, lamb, liver, beef, and chicken. I started with the liver, which was dense and so tasty and fatty! It was some of the best liver of my life! Next was a flavorful lamb chop with refreshing, crunchy onions. Next was the beef, which had a nice layer of fat around it. It was outstanding and so fresh!

Then, we had more lamb! This one was just lamb on the skewer instead of a lamb chop. The last kebab was beef and bread on a skewer. It had just the right amount of spices. It was amazing with the onions. It was so phenomenal!

I hope you enjoyed exploring the farmers market and having amazing Uzbekistan kebabs with me! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave a comment. Also, please subscribe to my YouTube channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!

From Shahrisabz to Samarkand - Uzbekistan 4K Travel Channel

The route back to Samarkand is the same as the one we came over. After leaving the houses of Shahrisabz behind us, the landscape is immediately brown and dry. Then the road climbs up the Zarafshan Range. On the slopes, we see scattered huge boulders.
At the top, we make a short stop at a fruit and spice market. The offered goods look good. Unfortunately, we have no need for them on our trip.
From here we have a beautiful view over the valley towards Samarkand.
Arrived in Samarkand we drive directly to our hotel.
.....
please read more:

???????? Uzbekistan: a travel documentary

#Uzbekistan #Travel #Documentary

After visiting Mongolia last Summer, we decided to explore a little further the Silk Road and picked Uzbekistan as our next destination.

We didn't really know what to expect: different sources gave us different opinions and we were unsure of what it would have been like.

We found a country full of architectural beauty, a lot of tradition, amazing food and colours. Still quite genuine, tourism hasn't spoiled it that much yet ... unfortunately looked like only big groups of people in their 50s/60s are willing to travel to this country.

It is affordable and it is suitable for both solo travellers, women, families and, of course, groups of any age.

Tashkent: it's the capital city and one of the largest cities in Central Asia. Worth a quick stop but don't spend too much time. The gardens and parks around the presidential buildings are very enjoyable and well maintained. Near the Chorsu Bazaar is the best part of town both because of the few remaining historical buildings are around, as well as for the market itself.

Samarkand: do not underestimate the distance here if you are on foot. It's truly impressive to stand in front of the Registan and look at the magnificent madrasas. It's indeed one of the most impressive square in the World. But even more impressive and fascinating is the Shah-I-Zinda mausoleum. The Bibi Khanyum Mosque is the third landmark and can't be missed. Two other documents are less appealing (unless you are an archeologist or an historian) but are still worth a visit: the Afrosiab ruins and the Ulug Beg observatory. Samarkand's history starts probably 3 millennia ago. The old Marqand was conquered by Alexander the Great. The it flourished as one of the major trading points along the Silk Road under the Sogdians and the Persians. When the arabs came in the region, it continue flourishing and its grandeur survived also the Mongol invasion. Infact, not long thereafter, it was the capital of the Timurid Empire that dominated Central Asia from Turkey to India at the end of the 14th century

Bukhara: different from Samarkand, Bukhara landmarks are less impressive but the entire historical center has been kept almost intact. People still live in the old town and enjoy the evening at the Lyabi Hauz. Bukhara will also give you a taste not only of the Silk Road, but also of the Great Game. The Ark fortress has impressive walls, but the madrasas here are the most interest. Our favourite has been the Abdullah Khan Madrasa.

Khiva: the old citadel of Khiva (the so-called Ichon Qala) is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. So many monuments are packed within it walls: 2 royal palace, 3 minarets and several mosques and madrasas. Khiva may see a museum for tourists during the day, but in reality has its own soul. You can feel it early morning of after sunset, before the tourists hit the road or by the weddings that took place every day on its streets.

PRACTICAL INFO:

Itinerary: we spent 10 days: 1 day in Tashkent, 2 days in Samarkand, 1.5 in Bukhara, 1.5 day in the Khorzem, 3 in Khiva and 1 day to come back to Tashkent. It gives you ample time. Ex-post, we only made an error to dedicate only one and half day to Bukhara as we were unable to see the monuments in the countryside

Flights: direct flights from London with Uzbekistan Airways. 7 hours for £400 with no flight entertainment

Transport: train is perfect. We had a travel agency (Salom Travel) booking for us the tickets in advance and delivering to our hotel in Tashkent. In addition, you need a tour or a driver to visit the Khorzem fortresses. We also relied on the same agency. We highly recommend Salom Travel

Food: amazing food for max $5 per person. We ate a lot at the kiosks in the various bazaar for much less than that. Everything is very tasteful, not only the meat, but also the vegs, the dumplings and the local spaghetti (nothing to do with Chinese noodles)

Safety: super safe

Locals: extremely friendly. Especially the younger, they will try to exchange a word or two in English. Uzbekistan is very isolated and not many foreigners are around. As result locals have not been westernized. E.g. all women still wear traditional dresses and you won't hear Justin Bibier around but rather Russian songs or Uzber traditional music. Some taxi drivers and ticket officers will try to squeeze a couple of dollars out of you but nothing that will bore you too much
