Using a Camping Pad as Hammock Insulation

x

Hammock / Staying warm / on a budget / How to use a inflatable and a closed foam pad in the hammock

Thinking about trying a hammock to replace the tent. But you don't want to spend a lot of money to see if hammock camping is going to work for you. In this episode. We are going to look at ways to stay warm underneath you. Which is one of the challenges of camping with a hammock.

Will a Sleeping Pad Work Inside a Hammock?

Subscribe to join the tribe:

It sounds simple enough. Why can't I just use my sleeping bag inside of my hammock? I've already invested in nice down insulation. Why do I have to buy additional hammock insulation?

This is one of those questions we get a lot. In this video we'll take a look at using a sleeping bag inside of a hammock, and why in reality, it's really not a good option! In addition we'll be testing a lesser known technique; using an insulated sleeping pad within a hammock, and comparing it with more traditional methods.

How (and why!) to use a sleeping pad in a hammock

Yes, it's time to throw away your expensive underquilt for hammock camping. Just kidding! That being said I pretty much use a sleeping or camping pad almost exclusively in a hammock. Two big reasons why you might want to consider it are for cost savings and for flexibility in case you have to go to the ground. In this video I show you how to maneuver with the camping pad in the single layer hammock and how to adjust so that you get an optimal lay.

THING I FORGOT: Of course, all this is slightly easier with a double layer hammock. You can just put a sleeping pad in between the layers. Some people even put velcro or rubberized sticky tabs on their hammock/sleeping pad to stop it from moving around as much.

Q&A / Episode #1 / Why not a sleeping bag / Hammock Camping

Since starting this channel. I have been getting a lot of questions. Mainly about the hammock and the tarp. For a while now. I have been thinking about doing a Q&A series. I believe it is easier to learn something when someone shows you while talking about it. Then to just text it.
So the plan is to take some questions in the comment section. And try to answer them the best that I can.

Beginner Hammock Camping Part 6 - Quilts, Underquilts and Pads

Do I need to use a sleeping pad in a hammock? Do I need an underquilt? These are 2 very popular questions when it comes to hammock camping. Similar to using a sleeping pad on the ground to insulate you from conduction, in a hammock you need to insulate yourself from convection of the air.

Tip #1: Use A Sleeping Pad
Add a foam or inflatable sleeping pad to your setup to keep you warmer and make your hammock more comfortable.

Tip #2: Use A Down/Synthetic Underquilt
An under quilt will be particularly helpful at temperatures under 40˚F.

Tip #3: Use A Tarp In Windy Conditions
Instead of adding more layers, a tarp over your hammock will provide extra shelter from the wind.
