My experience immigrating to Uruguay | 2 year Update | Expat Diaries

If you're new here, I'm maddie, and 2.5 years ago I moved from Australia to Montevideo Uruguay with my Fiance. We moved here because Alejandro has family here, but we never expected things to be quite so difficult. So living here, as foreigners, with very little support during one of the most dramatic changes in the world (2020) this was my experience!
Of course I could talk about so much more, so if you have any questions please comment and I will reply.

???? EXCERPT
Cons of retiring in Uruguay
It is Quite Far From America and Europe

One of the challenges of retiring in Uruguay is its geographical distance from North America and Europe. This can make travel to and from the country quite lengthy and potentially inconvenient. For instance, a direct flight from New York to Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital, can take around 11 hours. From London, it can take upwards of 14 hours, often with at least one stopover.

Furthermore, direct flights to Uruguay from many U.S. or European cities are not always readily available. This means that travelers may need to make one or more stopovers, often in other South American countries like Brazil or Argentina, which can add to the travel time and complexity of the journey.

This leads us to our next point…

Difficulties in visiting family and friends back home
Uruguay in a partial map of South America
This is probably the most important negative aspect of all when we talk about a move to Uruguay.

The geographical distanceto North America or Europe can pose significant challenges for expats trying to keep close ties with family and friends back home. The long and often complex travel arrangements required can make frequent visits difficult.

Firstly, the lengthy flight times can be physically demanding, especially for older retirees. The journey often involves long hours in transit, potential layovers, and the associated stresses of travel such as navigating unfamiliar airports or dealing with flight delays or cancellations.

Secondly, the lack of direct flights to many U.S. or European cities means that planning a trip home can be a complex process. It often involves coordinating multiple flights and potentially dealing with the additional requirements of transiting through other countries.

Finally, the time and cost associated with these long-distance trips can be prohibitive. This sense of distance and separation can be a significant drawback for those considering making Uruguay their retirement home.

Bureaucracy
Like many Latin American countries, Uruguay has its share of red tape, which can be frustrating for those accustomed to more efficient systems.

10 Things NOT To Do in Uruguay

Get more Tips here!

What’s not to love about Uruguay? The nation is not only home to an inviting cultural heritage and diverse natural beauty, but it’s routinely praised as South America’s least corrupt and most democratic nation. However, it's always good to remember these 10 Things NOT to do in Uruguay to avoid troubles.

1. Don’t Stay on the Beaches
There’s nothing wrong with spending a few days lounging and enjoying the scenery, but you’ll be remiss if you don’t take the opportunity to travel inland and enjoy all the cultural and natural beauty of the country. It’s absolutely worth exploring.

2. Don’t Drop Your Guard in Montevideo
While the capital city isn’t more dangerous than any other major city throughout the world, it still has its share of crime. When you’re in tourist-heavy locations, it’s a good idea to be on the lookout for pickpockets and small time criminals.

3. Don’t Park Anywhere
Urban areas in Uruguay are known for car break-ins, so it’s best not to leave your rental car unattended on the street. Montevideo has several pay parking options that will provide for the safety of your vehicle throughout your stay.

4. Don’t Be Put Off By the Hello Kiss
Don’t be surprised if you meet someone and find them leaning in to kiss you on the cheek. Men and women alike will greet you in this way, so it’s best just to go with it.

5. Don’t Shop at the Same Store Over and Over
The prices of goods can vary from place to place in Uruguay, so try to explore the area and visit a series of different shops. You might find that some shops have better prices on various items.

6. Don’t Just Wander Into the Ocean
In the Beaches, lifeguard towers often have flags hanging outside. A red flag indicates the most dangerous conditions and means you should probably stick to sunning yourself rather than taking a dip.

7. Don’t Give Money to Street Kids in Montevideo
They might look friendly and charming, but if you hand over a few bucks, you could be feeding addiction. One of the hardest hit segments of the population are young kids who beg on the street to get cash for their next fix.

8. Don’t Go Without Learning Some Spanish
It’s best to learn a few phrases of Spanish to get through most interactions. Most people in Uruguay will be very patient with you, so don’t be nervous about trying the language even if you’re not fluent.

9. Don’t Go at Any Time of the Year
As gorgeous as it is, Uruguay is also home to its fair share of natural disasters, as well. Be sure to watch the weather before you go, and in the event of an emergency, just pay attention to the local authorities.

10. Don’t Leave Home Without Some Cash
The official currency of Uruguay is the Uruguayan peso. The value of 30 pesos is about one American dollar. As a result, most places love doing business with the dollar, and you can often negotiate the price of certain goods.

Where do you want to know what not to do in next?

Where is Uruguay?

Learn more about Uruguay here:

You may already know it’s in South America. But perhaps you can’t point to it on a map.

If that’s the case, I don’t blame you.

It’s not a place you hear about all that often.

On the surface, it’s simply a small agricultural country on the east coast of South America. But as you look closer, I think you’ll agree Uruguay is definitely worth knowing about. It may even be a place you’ll want to visit.
