The WORLDS largest Wasabi Farm in Nagano (Daio Wasabi) | Japan Travel Guide | GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

The Daio Wasabi Farm (大王わさび農場, Daiō Wasabi Nōjō) lies in the peaceful outskirts of Hotaka town and is recognized as the largest such farm in Japan and was founded in 1915.

The Daio Wasabi Farm is a well known tourist spot for both Japanese and international foreign visitors and is known for its spectacular views and the inhouse restaurants and shops provide guests with an opportunity to try traditional staples infused with Wasabi such as Tempura, Beer, Ice Cream and Soba.

Once you’re done eating Wasabi or if you’re unfortunately not a fan of it, the farm is expertly made to have various walking trails and rest stops that will allow you to view the farm and the surrounding areas.

Perhaps the biggest attractions of the farm are the three watermills lining the larger river on the southwest side of the farm. These mills were added for the filming of the “Village of the Watermills” segment of Akira Kurosawa’s 1990 film Dreams, and were left in place ever since.

From late April to mid-October, visitors can enjoy 20-minute boat tours on the river in the area of the watermills. Visitors enjoy the views from inflatable rafts piloted by experienced guides.

4K NON-STOP Walking around the beautiful Daio Wasabi Farm with its waterwheel 水車のある美しい大王わさび農場を歩く

Today, while visiting Alps Azumino Park, we stopped by the Daio Wasabi Farm. It is a free facility, but we always end up buying a lot of wasabi. There is a waterwheel that was used in a movie called Dream directed by Akira Kurosawa. It really is a very beautiful river scene.

今日は、アルプスあずみの公園に行ったついでに大王わさび農場に寄りました。無料の施設ですが、いつもワサビをたくさん買うことになります。黒澤明監督の夢という映画で使われた水車があります。本当にとてもきれいな川の風景です。

Harvesting Wasabi in Yamagata

Today we join Derek Yamashita, as he harvests fresh wasabi from a rural farm deep in the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture.

We also see how freshly harvested wasabi is prepared and get to taste the difference between imitation wasabi and the real wasabi back at the farmers shop.

Real wasabi is by far the most difficult commercial crop to produce and requires extreme care and expertise to successfully raise over the three years it takes to grow.

We were also joined by Sharla In Japan, a Japan Youtuber who produces content introducing all sorts of places around Japan. See her channel here.

Learn more about Yamagata Prefecture on our site.

Fresh wasabi from Izu! See what wasabi looks like before it's turned to paste!

Just some additional info on wasabi that I got from the people at the store. The spiciness (if that's what you call the nasal-stinging sensation lol) is strongest in wasabi harvested in the winter, but apparently size doesn't make a difference in the taste!

Check out my izu vlog where my friends and I eat wasabi ice cream (that doesn't really taste like wasabi lol)

???? Echoes of Green: The Abandoned Wasabi Farm of Japan

Hidden amidst the dense foliage and quiet streams, an abandoned wasabi farm tells tales of a time when its verdant terraces thrived with the vibrant green of wasabi plants. Once pulsating with life, the farm now lies in solitude, with nature slowly reclaiming its land, leaving behind remnants of a once-prosperous endeavor.

Kurt Bell, an explorer with a keen eye for the lost and forgotten, rediscovers such serene pockets of nature, bearing stories of times gone by. Born in America in 1964, his evocative narratives, captured in works such as Going Alone and No More Looking Out For Number One, highlight the poetic beauty present in abandoned realms.
