Uganda: 11 Tips for Travellers | #WhereisAJ

AJAY JAIN

Do you like the thought of visiting Africa? And Uganda in specific? I have noticed some people looking a bit unsure at the prospect of going to Uganda - after all, we don’t come across too many who have been to the country. But those of us who have - including yours truly - can never stop talking about it. Uganda is clearly a traveller’s delight - and safer than many other places on the planet. While you think about a trip to the country, here are a few tips for you.

1. GETTING THERE
Not too many airlines serve the country - and you may have to hop a few airports to get there. The country does not have a national carrier - but the likes of Ethiopian, Kenya and Etihad will get you there.

2. VISA
Uganda introduced e-visas in June 2016 but the system was not functioning efficiently, at least until recently. You can get a multiple entry visas at the country’s embassy in your country. There is the option of visa-on-arrival too; you get only single entry though at the airport. The process is quite efficient taking only a few minutes and costs USD 100 - although there has been news of this being reduced to USD 50 to boost tourism inflows.

3. YELLOW FEVER VACCINATION
This is mandatory - for your sake more than anyone else’s. Get this in your home country and carry the certificate with the passport at all times. It is valid for 10 years so you don’t have to get one every time you visit countries that require you to.

4. CURRENCY
The local currency is Ugandan Shillings; the exchange rate is mid 2016 was USD 100 = UGX 330,000 approximately. Yes, you read that correct. You can change money in towns easily but not so in remote areas including forest reserves. US dollars are commonly accepted but you should carry small bills as change can be a problem.

5. ACCOMMODATION
The country offers options ranging from budget to luxury - take your pick. If you are in Uganda for the wildlife - which most people are for - I would recommend spending a little extra for a better lodge. Not only do you need the comforts, but the location and staff can make a big difference to your experience.

6. GETTING AROUND
The country boasts a vast network of quality roads; a car is the most enjoyable way to get around. You can pick a self-drive or one with a driver. It is a small country and most tourist attractions are only a few hours from each other. There are planes to take you to national parks with strips in the bush - but these are small ones with 12-14 seats and not to everyone’s liking. And these can be expensive.

7. SAFETY
It is natural to fear for one’s safety in foreign lands, especially when you are in continents like Africa with a disturbed past. Uganda is very safe - in fact, even more than some of its more popular neighbours. Of course, like anywhere in the world, don’t throw caution to the winds and you will be fine.

8. CLIMATE
No one can not love the climate of Uganda. The country is an endless landscape of rolling hills and forests with temperatures often in the mid-20s (Celsius) or mid-70s (F); an occasional shower can surprise you without warning any time. It is never too hot or too cold there. April and May are the wet seasons officially but life and game drives continue as usual.

9. PACKING
Dress for warm weather but do keep a light jacket, raincoat and umbrella handy at all times. Wear sturdy shoes and a hat when out for activities during the day. Carry a tuck of munchies and chocolates as these may not be easily available when you are on the highways or in forests.

10. COST OF LIVING
Uganda is not an expensive country for your daily needs including food. Since tourism is an important source of income, your outings in the wild may be expensive by some standards. But then again, this is one way of keeping such tourism sustainable.

11. LANGUAGE
English is spoken commonly especially in cities and by people in touch with tourists. The country has many local dialects - Ugandans have to speak to one another in English sometimes because they do not understand each other’s dialects.

Passport Mistakes: Part 2! (Plus a Passport HACK!)

Most countries require you to have at least 2 to 4 stamp-free pages in your passport in order to travel.

I know I have pages wasted on that one rogue stamp thrown in there all willy nilly.

Help keep your stamps where they belong by using a paper clip or rubber band to separate your stamp-free passport pages from your stamped pages.

Plan the Perfect Trip to Uganda: Expert Advice|Ultimate guide to Kampala Uganda ???????? as a foreigner|

It goes without saying that pre-solo-travel anxieties will depend on what you want from your trip, and what kind of person you are. Do you relish being outside your comfort zone, or does the thought fill you with fear rather than exhilaration? Are you a sociable person who wants to be in the middle of everything? If so, you might go crazy if you can't communicate, so head somewhere you speak the language.
Conversely, if you're travelling solo and more of an introvert, forget the language barrier. Vibrant cities are perfect for people watching, especially if those with a thriving café culture.

My Travels in Uganda with Audley Travel

Best known for its gorillas, Uganda has plenty to offer besides. Game drives, boat trips and walking safaris get you close to the country’s other wildlife, while immersing yourself in its rich variety of cultures opens your eyes to local traditions.

Safari specialist Mark captured this footage on his research trip to Uganda. His visit this time focused on activities beyond gorilla tracking, taking in quieter national parks filled with animals, as well as rural communities that demonstrate the country’s wide range of cultures.

In Murchison Falls National Park, you could take a boat trip along the wide Victoria Nile River, passing buffalo, pelicans, hartebeest and warthog on the banks, along with the occasional elephant. In Uganda’s far north, you can take walking safaris through the grasslands of Kidepo Valley National Park, looking out for zebra, Absinnian hornbills and baboons. Meanwhile, Semliki National Park is the best place to see the distinctive shoe-billed stork.

Among the different tribes you can meet are the Ik people. Spending time with them gives you a glimpse into their way of life, from herding goats to demonstrating traditional song and dance. Elsewhere, you can get to know the Batwa people, the original inhabitants of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. They’ll show you how they use their natural surroundings in their everyday lives.

Uganda: Planning a Trip to National Parks | #WhereisAJ

AJAY JAIN

Sub-Saharan Africa is teeming with wildlife across many countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia to name a few. But Uganda is where you may want to be in despite it not featuring on too many itineraries.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority ( is doing a good job managing over 10 national parks and I was fortunate to visit three of their finest recently. Join me in my game drives and plan your own itinerary accordingly.

PARKS VISITED
* Murchison Falls National Park
* Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
* Queen Elizabeth National Park (drove through Ishasha wildlife sector to get here and got a good sense of this park too)

PLANNING AN ITINERARY IN UGANDA’S NATIONAL PARKS
No amount of time is enough is you really love being in the wild and close to its flora and fauna. But we all need to draw a line somewhere - do provision for at least 2-3 full days in each park. When you visit Bwindi, you can be there for just two nights - you arrive on day one, go gorilla tracking the following morning, and return the following day.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS OF EACH NATIONAL PARK
* Murchison Falls National Park: It gets its name from falls by the same name on the Nile river. Don’t miss out on a river cruise where you can get close to the falls and feels sprays all over you (and your cameras!!). The river itself is home to countless hippos and crocodiles while the park boasts an impressive line-up to include lions, leopards, elephants, hyenas, giraffes, water buffaloes and many species of birds, reptiles and other mammals. The landscape draws you in - from the crack of dawn till night falls. Magical is the word for Murchison.

* Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: You go to Bwindi for the endangered Mountain Gorillas. They sure make you work hard for the sightings. Expect to be out all day tracking them through thick forests and slushy paths; the hilly terrain tests you, and be prepared to fall, slip and slide on your backside. A good scrub is what you will need at the end - but the sightings of gorillas will leave you glowing.

* Queen Elizabeth National Park: Another park that will leave you stunned with its virgin beauty. Elephants are to be found in abundance here - as are many other species of birds and animals. Take sunset cruises in the Kazinga channel and go up close to hippos, water buffaloes, crocs and thousands of birds hovering around you. Vast plains with pockets of thick forests make game drives a pleasure and an adventure - you never know what lurks around the corner.

SELECTING THE RIGHT GAME DRIVE VEHICLE AND GUIDE
Your experience in the jungle is largely shaped by your guides and the vehicles they use. You can choose from the comfortable closed vehicles with an opening in the roof or from those open on all sides; I prefer the latter as I can shoot from all angles and also remove the soft covers should I need angles from higher up. I always interview guides before selecting one - not only is their knowledge important, but they should have a good sense and intuition in tracking animals. Of course, no one can guarantee any sightings.

DO YOU BOOK A GAME DRIVE VEHICLE ALL FOR YOURSELF OR SHARE?
It all depends on your budget. A shared vehicle in obviously cheaper but it gives you lesser flexibility in choosing shooting positions as well as asking the guides to take you to your areas of interest. Personally, I save elsewhere but prefer to have a vehicle and guide to myself. I cherish the relative privacy too - it resonates well with the silence of the forest.

HOW DO YOU TRAVEL BETWEEN NATIONAL PARKS IN UGANDA?
Most parks in Uganda are within a few hours driving distance of each other. Of course, it can take longer if you were to go directly from, say, Murchison to Bwindi. The road network in quite extensive in Uganda, and they are mostly of good quality with low traffic density. You can also book rides on small planes that land on strips inside reserves but these are more expensive than equivalent flights in countries like Kenya; lower numbers in Uganda lead to higher operating costs here.
