Unique and undiscovered Street Food of Hue, Vietnam and dragon boats on the Perfume river.

We eat Nem nướng cuốn – Rice paper rolls with grilled pork skewers and Bún thịt nướng - cold rice noodles with grilled meat. Both are popular and tasty Vietnamese street food dishes in Hue, Vietnam. After dinner we try some of the famous Hue, Vietnam cold soups for desert. Though they are called cold soups they are served like drinks. Lotus seed sweet soup (Chè hạt sen), Clear tapioca pearls with roasted pork in ginger syrup (Chè bột lọc heo quay), and Purple yam sweet soup (Chè khoai tía) are all delicious.

After our street food dinner we take a dragon boat ride on the Perfume river and under the illuminated jun tien bridge Where we listen to tradional Vietnamese music and release a wish lantern in the Perfume river.

Vietnam Street Food Tour in Hue - You Have to Try This!

The primary reason we travelled to Hue, Vietnam was to taste the incredible and famous food the city has to offer - so we made a list, checked it twice, and went to find our which dishes were naughty, and which dishes were nice! The dishes included in our list were:

[1:55] Bánh bột lọc lá: Started with a dough of boiling water and tapioca starch, it is kneaded until smooth and elastic. It’s then filled with shrimp and pork belly, and steamed in a banana leaf. The Trần variety is made without the banana lead, and found commonly as a street food. Traditionally served with a sweet chilli fish sauce.

[2:49] Bánh Bèo: Translates loosely to water fern cakes. Made of rice and tapioca flour, combined with water to make a gelatinous bite-sized snack. Topped with dried shrimps, scallions and scallion oil, and crispy pork skin. Traditionally served with fish sauce.

[3:50] Bánh Khoái: Uniquely from Hué, it is a thicker and smaller version of Bánh Xèo. The batter is made of rice flour, water (sometimes sparkling water), turmeric, egg, and spring onion. It’s often filled with shrimp, pork, carrot, spring onion, and bean sprouts, and then deep fried. It’s served alongside peanut and pork liver sauce, a salad of carrots, green mango, starfruit, lettuce, cucumber, and pickled papaya and carrot

[5:20] Bún bò Huế: A popular soup found all across Vietnam, originating from Hué. The dish has a unique balance of spicy, salty, and umami unlike the more simple Phở. Its predominate flavour is lemongrass and has thicker rounded noodles compared to the wider flat noodles of Phở. The broth is prepared from beef shanks, oxtail, and pigs knuckles. It commonly includes congealed pigs blood which is said to help fortify the body. It’s served with lime wedges, copious fresh herbs, banana blossoms, and sometimes bean sprouts. Fish sauce and various types of spicy sauces can be added to taste.

[8:10] Cơm/Bún Hến: Another iconic Hué dish which is commonly eaten as a snack, this dish is made of baby clams that are marinated and then stir-fried with onions, oil, chilli powder and fish sauce are served with traditionally over a bowl of leftover rice or with thick round rice noodles, topped with roasted peanuts, a mixed salad of starfruit, green mango, banana leaf and herbs, and pork crackling. It can also be served with clam broth. Chilli and fish sauces can be added to taste.

[12:21] Bánh Ép: A lesser known dish to tourists, popular amongst locals, Bahn Ep is made up of a ball of tapioca dough which is flattened using a special grill, and topped with things such as green onion, eggs, pate, or meat slices. It’s ate by rolling it with herbs, cucumber, green papaya, and carrots. It’s served with a spicy fish sauce. It can be served both “wet”, softer, or crispy. It can also be found dried in markets.

Delicious Vietnamese Cuisine in Hue: 1 Night in Hue 2015

Vietnamese food in Hue is simply delicious. There aren't many other cities with its own unique cuisine or dialect as much as Hue as far as I know. I've been to many places in Vietnam. When I arrived in Hue, I instantly wanted to find bun bo hue, but was a little bit lost with trying to make it on time for the Forbidden City or the Citadel. I was so hungry that I had to stop to eat and a random lady who was making bun bo hue for her family fixed me up a bowl right next to the Citadel. Beautiful late afternoon dinner with a gentle breeze. By the time I finished, the Citadel already closed. So I worked up an appetite out of anger that I had missed it again for the second time in a year. Next, I went to a familiar restaurant and ate some banh beo, banh nam, banh loc- all famous Hue starch based cakes and love love love. Then I still felt hungry and went across town to eat some banh canh ca loc- which is snakehead fish banh canh. Then I met up with Luong and his friends and ate some beef tendons off of the side of the road just like in the original Hue SoJournaling Vietnam videos, and and we said goodbye to them and went to a restaurant to eat some nem, which are grilled pork sausages, and some banh khoai or some wannabe stiff banh xeos that I have never tried before. Overall, it was a wonderful evening and night of eating. By the end I was ready to explode. Check back soon for a few more Hue videos.

This video was filmed in January.
