The territory of modern Ukraine has been inhabited since 32,000 BC. During the Middle Ages, the area was a key centre of East Slavic culture, with the powerful state of Kievan Rus' forming the basis of Ukrainian identity. Following its fragmentation in the 13th century, the territory was contested, ruled and divided by a variety of powers, including the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Russia. A Cossack republic emerged and prospered during the 17th and 18th centuries, but its territory was eventually split between Poland and the Russian Empire. After World War II the Western part of Ukraine merged into the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, and the whole country became a part of the Soviet Union as a single state entity. In 1991, Ukraine gained its independence from the Soviet Union in the aftermath of its dissolution at the end of the Cold War. Before its independence, Ukraine was typically referred to in English as The Ukraine, but most sources have since moved to drop the from the name of Ukraine in all uses.[11]
Following its independence, Ukraine declared itself a neutral state;[12] it formed a limited military partnership with Russia and other CIS countries while also establishing a partnership with NATO in 1994. In 2013, after the government of President Viktor Yanukovych had decided to suspend the Ukraine-European Union Association Agreement and seek closer economic ties with Russia, a several-months-long wave of demonstrations and protests known as the Euromaidan began, which later escalated into the 2014 Ukrainian revolution that led to the overthrow of Yanukovych and the establishment of a new government. These events formed the background for the annexation of Crimea by Russia in March 2014, and the War in Donbass in April 2014. On 1 January 2016, Ukraine applied the economic component of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area with the European Union.[13]

Kharkiv (Ukrainian: Харкі́в, pronounced [ˈxɑrkiu̯]), also known as Kharkov (Russian: Харькoв), is the second-largest city and municipality in Ukraine.Located in the northeast of the country, it is the largest city of the historic Slobozhanshchyna region. Kharkiv is the administrative centre of Kharkiv Oblast and of the surrounding Kharkiv Raion. The latest population is 1,433,886 (2021 est.).
Kharkiv was founded in 1654 as a Kharkiv fortress [uk; ru], and after humble beginnings as a small fortress, it grew to be a major centre of industry, trade and Ukrainian culture in the Russian Empire. At the beginning of the 20th century the city was predominantly Russian in population, but after the Soviet government's policy of Ukrainization the city became populated mainly by Ukrainians with a significant number of Russians. Kharkiv was the first capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, from December 1919 to January 1934, after which the capital relocated to Kiev (Modern day Kyiv).
Presently, Kharkiv is a major cultural, scientific, educational, transport and industrial centre of Ukraine, with numerous museums, theatres and libraries, including the Annunciation and Dormition Cathedrals, the Derzhprom building in Freedom Square, and the National University of Kharkiv. Kharkiv was a host city for UEFA Euro 2012.
Industry plays a significant role in Kharkiv's economy, specialized primarily in machinery and electronics. There are hundreds of industrial facilities throughout the city, including the Morozov Design Bureau and the Malyshev Tank Factory (leaders in world tank production from the 1930s to the 1980s); Khartron (aerospace, nuclear power plants and automation electronics); Turboatom (turbines for hydro-, thermal- and nuclear-power plants); and Antonov (the multipurpose aircraft manufacturing plant).
Cultural artifacts date back to the Bronze Age, as well as those of later Scythian and Sarmatian settlers. There is also evidence that the Chernyakhov culture flourished in the area from the second to the sixth centuries.

We have done a lot of train travel around the world, and this first class overnight train from Kyiv to Lviv, Ukraine surprised us in a few different ways. We give a tour of our private room, show the bathroom, do a little bit of delirious giggling, sleep for 5 hours, and arrive in Lviv by 6 a.m.!

My friend Ann managed to make it out of Kyiv, Ukraine, and on her way to France, she stopped by Budapest with her cat for a visit. In my tiny 1 room apartment we had Kate, Ann, myself and a cat, but we made the most of it. While Kate had to work remotely, I took Ann for a walk though the city and to world famous Széchenyi thermal baths. But along the way, we would stumble though the best children's park in the world and a beautiful castle.

The territory of modern Ukraine has been inhabited since 32,000 BC. During the Middle Ages, the area was a key centre of East Slavic culture, with the powerful state of Kievan Rus' forming the basis of Ukrainian identity. Following its fragmentation in the 13th century, the territory was contested, ruled and divided by a variety of powers, including the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Russia. In 2013, after the government of President Viktor Yanukovych had decided to suspend the Ukraine-European Union Association Agreement and seek closer economic ties with Russia, a several-months-long wave of demonstrations and protests known as the Euromaidan began, which later escalated into the 2014 Ukrainian revolution that led to the overthrow of Yanukovych and the establishment of a new government. These events formed the background for the annexation of Crimea by Russia in March 2014, and the War in Donbass in April 2014. On 1 January 2016, Ukraine applied the economic component of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area with the European Union.[13]

First day exploring Kyiv, UKRAINE! (Ukraine is full of hidden gems)
Here is part 1 of our three part video series exploring Kyiv Ukraine! We are so excited to share this city with you. Kiev surprised us with its stunning churches and cool places to visit and yummy food. On our first day we visit the deepest spot in Kyiv and the highest tower. Kiev holds the world record for the deepest subway station second only to one in North Korea and you won’t believe how long these escalators are. Wow! The subway was not the only underground adventure of the day. We explored Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, the famous orthodox monastery that has an extensive cave system of catacombs and then went up for a skyline view from the stunning bell tower. The nighttime drone footage may be some of my favorite. Sunset of these gold domes really is a sight to see. Kyiv is such a cool city and we cant wait to share the rest of this series with you!
