Exploring the Titan II 9 Megaton Thermonuclear Warhead with Bianca Te Rito
In this travel vlog I'm exploring the Titan II Missile Silo complex in Tucson AZ that housed a 9 Megaton Thermonuclear intercontinental ballistic warhead during the Cold war. It was a top secret location known only as 571-7, and is all that remains of the 54 Titan II missile sites that were on alert 24 hours a day, seven days across the United States from 1963 to 1987. Its also the only place in the USA that allows public access.
This was an eye opening and deeply chilling experience (having been born in nuclear-free New Zealand), but highly worth the visit. The Tour guides (all volunteers) were extremely knowledgeable and added to the interactive experience.
We venture 150 ft underground into a silo, walked past 3 ton blast doors, and get up close to 9 Megaton Megaton thermonuclear warhead. The Titan II was not a first strike weapon it was a retaliatory weapon. These silos are designed to withstand a direct nuclear attack, and yet still launch their missile in retaliation.
All 54 Titan missile sites across the USA operated under what is known as MAD, meaning Mutually Assured Destruction. It sounds horrific, but the logic is based on the theory of peace through deterrence, where the USA's threat of retaliation with such strong nuclear weapons prevented the Soviet Union's use of those same weapons against the USA. This strategy is a form of Nash equilibrium in which neither side has any incentive to initiate a conflict - and it worked. There have been no conflicts between nuclear powers as a result of this strategy.
