Turkmenistan-Ashgabat: Wide Empty Boulevards Part 4

Ashgabat wide empty boulevards:
The capital city of Turkmenistan is over-the-top and outlandish, with white marble buildings flanking wide and empty boulevards, psychedelic government edifices looming over perfectly manicured gardens. Through the last decade, the country has prospered tremendously from their vast natural gas and oil resources. The government has since poured their wealth into reforming their capital city.
Lonely Planet describes Ashgabat as a cross between Las Vegas and Pyongyang — it’s easy to see how accurate this description is once you’re here. With the glitzy marble facades and bright neon lights, Ashgabat resembles Las Vegas especially by night. On the other hand, the artificially clean and new look, and the Stalinist-like regime that governs the country reminds me of North Korea. Coming to Ashgabat is like stepping into the future and yet knowing fully well that you’re stuck in the past. Turkmenistan is a relatively wealthy country but its people are still living in a controlled regime imposed by the government.
How did it get so bizarre?
A major earthquake in 1948 wiped out the entire city of Ashgabat, killing almost 110,000 people even though Stalin refused to admit that and reported only 14,000 deaths. Ashgabat was then rebuilt in the Soviet style. In 1991, Turkmenistan finally gained independence. It’s leader Turkmenbashi (an eccentric dictator of sorts who named himself the ‘leader of the Turkmen’) immediately carried out major construction plans to welcome in “the golden era of Turkmenistan”. The result is a brand new city with a jumble of lavish golden-domed palaces, Bellagio fountains, neon-lit monuments and Stalinist ministries of state.
Is it worth visiting?
Turkmenistan is the seventh least visited country in the world, receiving only 3,000 visitors per year. Many travelers choose to skip Turkmenistan due to the strict visa rules. You can only get a tourist visa if you join a guided tour and that means added cost and limited freedom (you can also get a transit visa but that’ll only give you three to five days in the country). I would definitely recommend a visit, especially if you are a curious traveler keen on places that are unconventional and under-theradar.

Park in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

There was one particular moment and visual in Turkmenistan I can never forget - my favorite one of the entire trip - that will be seared into my brain forever. This simple sight made more of an impression on me than any of the towering gold and marble monuments, the ancient ruins or gargantuan and opulent buildings. It was wandering into the central park that first night. I can't even tell you why, but there was something about turning the corner, walking under the trees and seeing a small, glowing Ferris wheel 200 feet in front of me. As I walked closer, there were the people! The people I'd missed all day...the Turkmen. Oh, how beautiful they were! The families, and kids, and the ladies - all wearing long, flowing, colorful patterned dresses, heels and silk scarves on top of their heads. They were enjoying the small carnival rides, eating popcorn and cotton candy and smiling and laughing. I've always dreamed of having a time machine  and how amazing it would be to travel back to simpler times. This was it! I felt like I was in the 1920s. The hairs on the my arms and the back of my neck stood at attention. It was surreal. It felt like a dream. It was something so simple yet so special. Where am I???

Ashgabat:
Ashgabat – the capital of Neutral and Independent Turkmenistan considered as an administrative, cultural and business centre of the country since the declaration of Independence of the country on 27th of October in 1991.
The fate of Ashgabat is wonderful and unique. With its name, tracing back into centuries, and being wiped off the face of the earth in the middle of the XX century, this city has become an embodiment of immortality, the most everlasting soul of the Turkmen nation.
This nation has passed a historical way equal to the history of the whole human civilization. Having taken upon itself the world joy and miseries, having introduced its inexhaustible spiritual donation and constructive energy, this nation has not worn out in soul and talent, and its today revival witness thereof.
Being founded in 1881 the city was given the name of the adjacent village – Asgabat. The name of the rapidly built, buried in verdure Caspian oblast was translated as “city of love, fertility, welfare”. Hence became the custom: Ashgabat is a city of love. A sunny cosy oasis, protected by the Karakum desert in the north and by the Kopet - Dag ridge in the south, has aroused in its citizens bright and warm feelings towards their native city, and it has become a sing of Ashgabat, its essential peculiarity.
Having been newly built after the earthquake (6th of October in 1948), Ashgabat has preserved this peculiarity.
Day by day the capital of our motherland become more and more beautiful and gladdens the eye with its new appearance. Constellation of unique architectural buildings, lots of museums, exhibition halls and theatres attract the guests of our capital.
For the last years Ashgabat completely changed it’s former appearance. Fresh climatic air, clean and wide streets, new parks with majestic fountains and originality of the capital keep unforgettable impressions.

Turkmenistan-Ashgabat (Seyit Jemaliddin XV century) Part 7

Seyitdzhemaliddin Mosque, Ashgabat
This medieval mosque was built in the XV century. Unfortunately the building was almost completely destroyed by the Ashgabat earthquake, and today it comes in front of the tourist in a renovated version. The mosque consists of 17 rooms, including a square hall covered with a dome supported by for large arches. The hall walls are divided into three floors. Two wide and deep niches lead to the terrace. Spiral stairs located in the corner of the hall lead to the galleries on the first and third floors and also to the roof. In the yard, from northern side there stands a large ayvan (trestle-bed).

The mosque singularity is in its ornamental finishing. The mosque façade is engraved with an inscription saying that this building was erected under Abul-Kasim Babur, Temurid prince who was ruling in Khorasan (1447- 1457). The main portal arch is decorated with figures of fabulous dragons. According to historians these dragons are painted there as magic creatures, allegedly preserving Dzemal’s House from evil.

Gypjak Mosque in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

Gypjak Mosque in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan
Eleven kilometers to the west of Ashgabat there stands the largest mosque in Central Asia and main mosque of Turkmenistan – The Turkmenbashi Ruhy Mosque. Like all other buildings of the period of independence it differs with its immensity and grandiosity.

The mosque was built in 2002-2004 on the initiative of Turkmenbashi and named after him. Its word-for-word translation means “the mosque of Turkmenbashi spirituality” or “the mosque of spirit of Turkmenbashi”. By the way the mosque is located in Gypjak – the Turkmenbashi native village.

The construction of the mosque cost to Turkmenistan $100,000,000. The whole complex is built in white marble by French company Bouygues. The total area occupied by the complex is 18,000,000 m2. The mosque itself is a one-domed building, surrounded by 4 minarets. The height of the mosque is 55 m, and that of the minarets is 91 m to symbolize the year 1991 – when Turkmenistan gained independence. The building is accessible through 9 entries with arches. Around the mosque there are numerous fountains as though the mosque stands on the water and it makes the mosque look very good.

The mosque walls are traditionally decorated with suras from Koran and also phrases from Rukhnama – the book on spirituality and morality written by Turkmenbashi himself. Due to this fact the mosque is not recognized by many Muslims.

Inside the mosque there is a huge praying hall with white columns and richly painted celestial blue dome. The heated floor is covered with a huge hand-made Turkmen carpet. The mosque can accommodate about 10,000 people, but visitors are usually few there. Under the mosque there is an underground garage capable to park over 400 cars.

Near the mosque, there is the Turkmenbashi Mausoleum – more modest in décor and size. Turkmenbashi himself is buried in the central sarcophagus, and around it, there are three more sarcophagi with his mother and two brothers, and one in addition, which is empty – a symbolic sarcophagus with the name of Turkmenbashi’s father, buried in another place.

Turkmenbashi’s mother and both of his brothers are known to die during the earthquake of 1948. As far as Turkmenbashi himself concerns, he had a narrow escape: that very day, he got up early and went outside for a walk.

Opposite the entry to the mausoleum, there is a memorial complex, erected in memory of the people killed by the earthquake of 1948.

The Turkmenbashi Ruhy Mosque is a national asset and pride of the Turkmen people. Its image can also be seen on a national currency – 500-TMT banknote.
