Have you ever heard of ASHGABAT, TURKMENISTAN before? If not, then get ready to learn about how strange it is here in my 170th country.

I've spent the last 24 hours roaming around the capital city of Ashgabat, and IT REMINDS ME EXACTLY OF PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA in just about every way possible. Huge fancy buildings with very few people inside perfectly manicured gardens and boulevards with nobody on them and this eerie feeling that someone is watching over my shoulder 24/7. TURKMENISTAN IS WEIRD.

People had told me that Ashgabat was strange, but I had no idea to what extent it was until arriving here.... Find out everything you need to know about Turkmenistan's capital in this video!

How many of you guys actually knew about this place? Would love to see a show of hands :)

Turkmenistan - Ashgabat

Ashgabat is the capital and the largest city of Turkmenistan in Central Asia, situated between the Karakum Desert and the Kopet Dag mountain range.
The city was founded in 1881, and made the capital of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic in 1924. Much of the city was destroyed by the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake but has since seen extensive renovation under President Saparmurat Niyazov's urban renewal project.

Spending $20 at a Turkmenistan Market

Ashgabat Turkmenistan is a strange place. I have never seen so much gold and marble in my life, but the streets seemed empty. In this Turkmenistan travel vlog, I join my friend Lexie Alford and make a trip to a local Turkmen market called the Russian Bazaar. Here, we tried street food, interacted with the locals, and witnessed some real culture.

I say real culture, because Turkmenistan is known as the North Korea of Central Asia. The president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow has a tight grip on the country, and it's very hard to get off the normal tourist path.

Beside our hotel was a local market, we asked our guide if we could visit, and he said if we really wanted to we could, but not to bring a camera because of police. The locals had been so nice to us, so thought we would take a small chance.

One more thing to note. After I posted the first Turkmenistan travel vlog in Ashgabat, I had said that we had our US dollars exchanged to Turkmen Manat at 1 to 13. Locals commented that it's actually suppose to be 1 to 20. It's funny though, from an atm it's 1 to 3.5.
Very happy we got our money on the black market.

Visiting Turkmenistan as an American Tourist!

After a long time I finally got around to making another video! In June of 2019, I visited the country of Turkmenistan, located in Central Asia. I visited this country with a tour company called AdvanTour. This country is one of the hardest countries in the world to get a visa for.

I'm sorry for the glitches... It happens every time I make a video on my computer. I found out a way to fix it but it was too late. Hopefully on my next video there won't be glitches!

The World's Most BIZARRE Building? | Ashgabat Turkmenistan vlog

Welcome to Ashgabat, capital of one of the strangest countries I've been to. This is the second travel vlog in our Turkmenistan series!

While travelling through Ashgabat, things seem strange. Everything is vibrantly white and gold, and there is no one around... If you're looking for the strangest and most bizarre places to visit in 2020, Turkmenistan might be it.

The presidents of this country have taken a liking to collecting Guinness World Records. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Turkmenistan's Dictator/President and the former (now deceased) president Turkmenbashi have decorated the capital of this closed republic with white marble, and buildings built to break records.

Highest density of white marble clad buildings, largest architectural star, and this... the largest indoor Ferris Wheel, and many many more.

We were able to take a few hours to experience this giant space compass for ourselves, and even take if for a ride.

We visited in early 2019, but it's worth putting on your radar for 2020. The new president Gurbanguly has opened up the country much more than it used to be. Getting the VISA wasn't a walk in the park, but our friends at Lupine Travel set everything up for us.. Check out their trips to some of the lesser travelled countries!

10 Wacky Things About TURKMENISTAN

✅ SUBSCRIBE for More Travel Videos:
???? Get My Top 100 Travel Pics FREE!

It's been a wild several days in Turkmenistan. In my opinion, this is (by a long shot) the world's most bizarre country.

In this video, I explain the 10 strangest things that I find about Turkmen culture -- from the thousands of white-marble buildings to the shockingly empty streets, a massive fire crater in the desert that hasn't stopped burning for 50 years, and the heavy censorship of the internet.

Turkmenistan is essentially the North Korea of Central Asia. Both the capital cities of Pyongyang and Ashgabat feel eerily similar when walking around. The only major difference is that the people of North Korea are oppressed, whereas the people of Turkmenistan seem to be warm, friendly, and hospitable.

Please share any thoughts/comments/questions about Turkmenistan and I'll be happy to answer!

The city where DOGS ARE ILLEGAL | Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

Ashgabat Turkmenistan is one of the strangest cities I have ever made a travel vlog about.

Recently brought to the attention of the world through John Oliver's popular program Last Week Tonight, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Turkmenistan's Dictator/President is quite a character.

However the craziness it didn't all start with him. Turkmenistan's first president, Turkmenbashi, set quite a powerful precedent.

He instated many strange rules for the country, and for the city of Ashgabat. No opera, it's too noisy, no makeup on television, the natural beauty of the Turkmen people is enough, and no dogs. Dogs were not allowed in the Capital city of Ashgabat due to their foul odor.... what?

We only had a short day in Ashgabat before continuing our trip to Merv, and eventually to roast marshmallows over the door to hell. We were able to do some sightseeing to the Arc of Neutrality, which is topped with a golden rotating statue of Turkmenbashi, also the wedding palace of happiness, and the world's largest indoor Ferris Wheel, which is the next vlog ????????

We visited in early 2019, but it's worth putting on your radar for 2020. The new president Gurbanguly has opened up the country much more than it used to be. Getting the VISA wasn't a walk in the park, but our friends at Lupine Travel set everything up for us.. Check out their trips to some of the lesser travelled countries!

Turkmenistan-Ashgabat: Wide Empty Boulevards Part 4

Welcome to my travelchannel. ☛☛☞☛
On my channel you can find more than 1000 films of almost 80 countries. See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy!

Ashgabat wide empty boulevards:
The capital city of Turkmenistan is over-the-top and outlandish, with white marble buildings flanking wide and empty boulevards, psychedelic government edifices looming over perfectly manicured gardens. Through the last decade, the country has prospered tremendously from their vast natural gas and oil resources. The government has since poured their wealth into reforming their capital city.
Lonely Planet describes Ashgabat as a cross between Las Vegas and Pyongyang — it’s easy to see how accurate this description is once you’re here. With the glitzy marble facades and bright neon lights, Ashgabat resembles Las Vegas especially by night. On the other hand, the artificially clean and new look, and the Stalinist-like regime that governs the country reminds me of North Korea. Coming to Ashgabat is like stepping into the future and yet knowing fully well that you’re stuck in the past. Turkmenistan is a relatively wealthy country but its people are still living in a controlled regime imposed by the government.
How did it get so bizarre?
A major earthquake in 1948 wiped out the entire city of Ashgabat, killing almost 110,000 people even though Stalin refused to admit that and reported only 14,000 deaths. Ashgabat was then rebuilt in the Soviet style. In 1991, Turkmenistan finally gained independence. It’s leader Turkmenbashi (an eccentric dictator of sorts who named himself the ‘leader of the Turkmen’) immediately carried out major construction plans to welcome in “the golden era of Turkmenistan”. The result is a brand new city with a jumble of lavish golden-domed palaces, Bellagio fountains, neon-lit monuments and Stalinist ministries of state.
Is it worth visiting?
Turkmenistan is the seventh least visited country in the world, receiving only 3,000 visitors per year. Many travelers choose to skip Turkmenistan due to the strict visa rules. You can only get a tourist visa if you join a guided tour and that means added cost and limited freedom (you can also get a transit visa but that’ll only give you three to five days in the country). I would definitely recommend a visit, especially if you are a curious traveler keen on places that are unconventional and under-theradar.

Turkmenistan: World’s Strangest Dictatorship | Fake Image VS Reality

This is one of the most mysterious countries in the world! The Turkmen people live without freedom and are often scared to share their true experience with outsiders. It’s almost impossible to get a visa to come here, but I had a chance to visit Turkmenistan several years ago, and I would love to share my thoughts on it with you.

Why the streets are always empty, why you can’t grab a bite at local cafes, why Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow needs so many palaces, why everything here is made of gold and white marble and what Jennifer Lopez had to apologise for? More about the strangest country in the world in my new video!

Unveiling Ashgabat, Turkmenistan: A Journey Through the City of Marble and Mystery

Discover the intriguing city of Ashgabat, where the streets of its new white marble districts are eerily quiet, earning it the nickname ‘city of the dead’. But don’t be fooled by its stillness - this city is full of surprises. In fact, it holds the Guinness World Record for having the most white marble on Earth. Join us as we uncover the secrets of this fascinating destination.

Ashgabat is the capital and largest city of Turkmenistan, located between the Karakum Desert and the Kopetdag mountain range in Central Asia. Founded in 1881 on the basis of an Ahal Teke tribal village, it was made the capital of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic in 1924. The city was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1948 but has since been extensively rebuilt under Saparmurat Niyazov's White City urban renewal project.

The city is known for its lavish marble palaces, gleaming gold domes, and vast expanses of manicured parkland. Built almost entirely off the receipts of Turkmenistan’s oil and gas revenues, Ashgabat’s transformation continues at break-neck speed. Whole neighborhoods have faced the wrecking ball in the name of progress, with gleaming white marble monoliths springing up overnight like mushrooms.

Ashgabat is home to many popular attractions such as the Turkmen Museum of Fine Arts, which features sculptures, museums, and art galleries; Turkmenistan Independence Monument; World of Turkmenbashi Tales; Ertuğrul Gazi Mosque; Ashgabat National Museum of History; Monument to the Constitution; and Russian Bazaar.

Join us as we explore this unique city and discover its many wonders. From its stunning architecture to its rich history and culture, Ashgabat is a destination like no other. Don't miss this opportunity to experience one of Central Asia's most fascinating cities.

Ashgabat (Arkadag) Turkmenistan. Aşgabat (1000000)

Ashgabat is the capital of Turkmenistan, the largest administrative, political, industrial, scientific and cultural center of the state. On May 25, 2013, the city was included in the Guinness Book of Records for the fifth time as the whitest marble city in the world (543 new buildings lined with white marble) On August 6, 2018, it was announced that the city's population had exceeded 1 million residents.
City of the future: “Ashgabat City” with “smart” apartments will appear in the capital of Turkmenistan. The name of the new city “Arkadag” appeals to the official title “Arkadag” (or “Hero-Arkadag”) Construction of the city began in 2020; by the end of 2022, a significant part of the first phase of construction of the new city was at an advanced stage of completion.

Turkmenistan Vlog | Exploring Ashgabat an INSANE marble city!

Turkmenistan Part 2:

Thank you so much for watching! My brother and I traveled across Central Asia in October 2019. Read about locations and trip details below:

Location: Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

Stop #1: Happiness Palace (Wedding Palace) -- The eleven-story building holds seven banquet rooms, 36 shops, and two cafes, providing all the necessary items of wedding services, including dress shops, decorations, beauty salons and a 22-room hotel. The third and fourth floors hold administrative offices and a library.

Stop #2: Old Nisa -- One of the Parthian Empire’s earliest capitals. Its Parthian name was Mithradatkirt, or fortress of Mithradates (171-138 BC), after the king who turned Parthia into a powerful empire and one of Ancient Rome’s greatest rivals. The Parthian Empire was the most powerful force on the Iranian plateau, intermittently controlling Mesopotamia between 190 BC and AD 224. At one point, its empire occupied all of modern Iran, Iraq and Armenia, parts of Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. It also briefly held territories in Pakistan, Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Palestine.

Stop #3: Türkmenbaşy Ruhy Mosque -- The mosque, constructed by the French company Bouygues, was built in the hometown of President Saparmurat Niyazov. It opened on October 22, 2004 and was built by Niyazov with a mausoleum in preparation for his death. Niyazov died two years later, and was buried in the mausoleum on December 24, 2006.
