Tunisian Street Food | Bambalouni | Fricassé | Kafteji Sandwich
Bambaloni, also referred to as bambalouni, is a sweet Tunisian donut. It can be made at home or bought from fast food shops. It is prepared with a flour dough fried in oil. The bambaloni is eaten sprinkled with sugar or soaked in honey. It can be eaten at any time of day.
The fricasse is a savory donut often filled with tuna, hard boiled egg, olives, harissa, and mashed potato condimented with turmeric usually purchased from a traditional Tunisian food vendor. It can be made at home or in fast food restaurants.
Kafteji is a staple of Tunisian street food. It is the on-the-go version of the Kafteji dish. Made of fried vegetables namely peppers, tomatoes, pumpkin, potatoes and adding a fried egg at the end.
kafteji differs from the main Kafteji dish simply in the format as the mixture of vegetables is put into a piece of sliced bread to turn it into a sandwich. Of course it would not be a Tunisian street food icon without adding harissa.

Tunisia has developed its own version of fast food with Tunisian sandwiches over the years. When you visit Tunisia, you will notice the fast food industry is not dominated by major fast food franchises, but rather there are little street side restaurants scattered throughout the country.

We took a day trip to Ashdod, Israel, and it was only a short drive from Tel Aviv. We first stopped at an amazing Aunty who is known for her Moroccan food. We then had an incredible Tunisian sandwich in Ashdod, before finishing with a gourmet fish lunch.
“The Old Lady” - There’s no restaurant name, but setting up around 11 am in a small park in Ashdod, this Aunty serves some unbelievable Moroccan Jewish food. We ordered a plate of tuna stewed in chili and a plate of mixed beef parts, mostly tongue and head meat, stewed in the same chili. It was one of the best meals I ate in Israel.
Total price - 80 ILS ($22.33)
Mauris Tunisian Frikase - Another legendary hold in the wall food spot you have to try when you’re in Ashdod is Mauris Tunisian Frikase, a type of fry bread sandwich. The bread is fried then filled with a variety of harissa, vegetables and tuna. Mauris also insisted I try some Boukha, a Tunisian fig spirit. The combo was awesome.
Frikase - 30 ILS ($8.37)
Pescado Restaurant - Finally for lunch we drove over to Pescado, a gourmet fish restaurant. The owner's family has a fishing industry, so that’s why they have such a good source of best quality fish from the Mediterranean. The food was fresh and excellent. I enjoyed the fusion of Middle Eastern and Japanese cooking ingredients and techniques.
Total price - 400 ILS ($111.63)
And that completes our Ashdod food tour. Food was amazing, my favorite was the amazing elderly lady who cooks Moroccan food that will blow your taste buds!

MARRAKESH, MOROCCO - Welcome to the thrilling city of Marrakesh, Morocco - and a Moroccan street food paradise. Today we’re eating our way through the old town - we’ll taste some of the most famous street foods and some things we find along the way. It’s going to be an exciting day of Moroccan street food in Marrakesh!
A huge thank you to Moroccan Food Tour ( for arranging my trip to Morocco!
Breakfast - We started with breakfast donuts - known as sfenj - the dough is made into a ring by hand and deep fried. I especially loved the ones that are flattened and then filled with an egg on the inside. Next we had bisarra - Moroccan fava bean soup, which was delicious.
Zaazaa - Next up we stopped in a fruit shop and had a deluxe avocado milkshake with all sorts of toppings.
Chez Omar Sandwich Mixte - One of the highlights was Chez Omar Sandwich Mixte who makes classic Moroccan fast food sandwiches made with a mix of meats and onions and coriander all sizzled in oil on a hot plate. It’s a Moroccan street food you have to eat when you’re in Marrakesh. And it costs just 15 MAD ($1.49 USD)!
Continuing with this street food tour, we had some refreshing pomegranate juice, Loubia - Moroccan stewed white beans, and did some olives tasting.
Chez Lamine - Nothing is more famous in Marrakesh than Chez Lamine for their Mechoui - Moroccan pit roasted lamb. It’s quite a scene with all the lambs roasting in an underground oven.
Restaurant Tiznit - Full of lamb we headed to the next restaurant to try a Rabbit Tagine - Rabbit and raisins slow cooked in a clay pan, and another must eat dish in Marrakesh; Beef Tangia - Beef and spices slow cooked in clay vase.
Finally we finished this Moroccan food tour with a bowl of special local yoghurt.
