Tunis, the capital of Tunisia | Best Places to Visit in Tunis, Tunisia

Tunis is the capital and largest city of Tunisia, a country in North Africa.
It is located on the Mediterranean Sea's Gulf of Tunis, behind the Lake of Tunis and the port of La Goulette.
Founded by the Libyans in the 2nd millennium BCE, and over time occupied by Berbers and Numidians.
The city of Tunis has been controlled by the Phoenicians, Romans, Arab Muslims, Ottomans, the Spanish, the French, and the Germans, and finally achieved independence as the capital of Tunisia in 1956.
This history has made Tunis a city of wonder with the largest cultural contrasts.
Tunis is divided into the World Heritage Listed old city and the new city, or ville nouvelle in French.
The city has many ancient buildings and a captivating mix of North African and French architecture.
From the winding alleys of the medina, filled with tantalizing aromas and colourful bazaars, to the sleek and contemporary architecture of the modern city.

Tunis (Arabic: تونس Tūnis) is the capital and largest city of Tunisia. The greater metropolitan area of Tunis, often referred to as Grand Tunis, has about 2,700,000 inhabitants. As of 2020, it is the third-largest city in the Maghreb region (after Casablanca and Algiers) and the eleventh-largest in the Arab world.
Situated on a large Mediterranean Sea gulf (the Gulf of Tunis), behind the Lake of Tunis and the port of La Goulette (Ḥalq il-Wād), the city extends along the coastal plain and the hills that surround it. At its core lies Ancient Medina, a World Heritage Site. East of the Medina, through the Sea Gate (also known as the Bab el Bhar and the Porte de France), begins the modern city Ville Nouvelle, traversed by the grand Avenue Habib Bourguiba (often referred to by media and travel guides as the Tunisian Champs-Élysées), where the colonial-era buildings provide a clear contrast to smaller, older structures. The avenue also hosts the famous clocktower Further east by the sea lie the suburbs of Carthage, La Marsa, and Sidi Bou Said. As the capital of the country, Tunis is the focus of Tunisian political and administrative life and also the center of the country's commercial and cultural activities.

The Souks of Tunis, Tunisia 2023.

In today's video, we are going to walk in The Souk of Tunis in Tunisia.

The souks of Tunis are a set of shops and boutiques located in the medina of Tunis, the capital of Tunisia.
Most souks were built under the Hafsid dynasty in the 13th century and near the Al-Zaytuna Mosque.
They are organized in several streets and alleys and The souks were housed in the Medinas, which were the Old Towns. These souks were traditional markets that came alive with bright colours, vibrant people, and beautiful aromas. The larger cities like Tunis, Sousse, Kairouan, and Sfax all had Medinas that housed these bustling souks.

When I entered the souk for the first time, I was prepared for a very different shopping experience from what I was used to. The souks were set along narrow passages and covered alleys, offering a wide selection of stalls selling traditional Tunisian items. From copper to pottery, jewellery to clothing, carpets to leather goods, you could find anything you desired in these souks. It was the perfect place to find souvenirs to take home or gifts for friends. I quickly learned that I had to put on my bargaining hat when walking into the souks. The hustle and bustle of the market, the electrifying atmosphere, the bright colours, and the amazing smells were all part of the experience.
The stall owners expected visitors to barter with them, so negotiating on price was not considered an insult. It added to the authenticity of the souk experience.

Visiting a souk in Tunisia was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, unlike any market I had ever visited back home. It was alive, thriving, and most of all, fascinating. I could have sat in the souk all day, watching as the stall owners bartered, visitors wandered through the passages, and the colours brightened up the ancient Medina. It was a personalized adventure that brought me closer to the vibrant culture of Tunisia.

Filmed: July 27, 2023, 05:20 PM. (pre-recorded).

Tunis - discover the capital of Tunisia

Tunis - discover the capital of Tunisia

We leave Kairouan and continue to drive north. What a difference with the quiet south. It takes some getting used to the crowds and the noise.
It is a challenge to drive here. The traffic in the city is completely crazy.

There are lots of people in the souk. It doesn't feel completely safe in Corona times. We walk past all the souvenir shops. Unlike what people warned us about we are not harassed and no one is trying to sell us anything.

We wander through the souk and find a great roof terrace where we can recover from the heat and enjoy the beautiful view over the souk.

In the Bardo Museum you Can find Roman mosaics that come from the former Roman cities. The mosaics are very impressive and are well preserved. Unfortunately, the bardo museum is not only known for its collection of mosaics.

The attack on the Bardo Museum in March 2015 killed 21 people. During that time, several terrorist attacks took place in Tunisia, including one on a hotel in Sousse. The attacks had a major impact on the local tourism industry as major European tour operators ignored Tunisia. Since then, tourism has never fully picked up again. Now in corona time there are hardly any tourists except in the beach resorts.
