My backpacking journey through Afghanistan's rugged Wakhan Corridor (as an American). I spent a total of two weeks in the country, 10-days trekking over 100 miles through the Pamir Mountains. It was a wild trip!

The Wakhan Corridor (Panj River & Pamir Mountains) Afghanistan - Guide With Commentary Before Travel

Learn about the Wakhan Corridor in Afghanistan, with this simple short guide and commentary. Discover where it is located, its length, width and what you need before travelling.

Before Travel Information About The Wakhan Corridor:

Located in the North East part of Afghanistan, is the remote area known as the Wakhan Corridor.

This remote strip of land, borders several countries, which include China, Pakistan and Tajikistan.

The Wakhan Corridor, is situated between both the Pamir Mountains and Karakoram Range. The Pamir Mountains are to the North and Karakoram range to the South.

The area to which the Wakhan Corridor is located, is known as the Badakhshan Province.

The area has become more popular with Explorers over the past few years and is believed to have been travelled by Alexandra The Great and Marco Polo, whilst on their way to China.

The Length of The Corridor:

The actual length, is approximately 218 Miles (350 Kilometers) long.

The Width Of The Corridor:

The width of the Corridor ranges from between 7 Miles (13 Kilometers) and 40 Miles (65 Miles) at its widest point.

Getting There:

Travelling to the Wakhan Corridor is not easy and requires much planning and research. You will be required to obtain 3 visas from different authorities, before you are allowed to enter the region.

History Of The Wakhan Corridor:

The history of the Corridor, dates back many centuries. Although the Wakhan is currently closed, it was not always so. It was originally an integral place in which countries met but all changed in 1873. In 1873, an agreement was made that created a border between both Afghanistan and the Russian Empire.

Then, in 1949 the borders were closed, which restricted the movement between countries.

DRIVING the WAKHAN VALLEY! - TAJIKISTAN - The Way Overland - Episode 72

Following the Panj River down the valley, the days were becoming a little warmer and we were beginning to see more people around as we crossed over the halfway point of our time in the Wakhan.

Our next stop was Yamchun Fort, one of many fort ruins which can be found in the Wakhan and date back to the third century BC. Many of them, like Yamchun were built to service the silk route, and although appearing quite deteriorated, Yamchun Fort is actually the most well preserved in the region. We wandered around for an hour or so, taking it all in and tried to imagine what it would of been like centuries ago when it was being used.

Our plans for the rest of the day were to drive to Ishkashem, have a quick lunch stop and continue on looking for somewhere to camp for the night. We kept a lookout for tracks going off down towards the river and managed to find a great spot to set up which was hidden from the road and had incredible views up to the mountains in Afghanistan.

In Ishkashem, if you time your trip to be there on a Saturday you can cross the border to the market which is held on the Afghan side. Unfortunately our timing didn’t work out to go to the market though we’ve heard it’s a great experience!

From Ishkashem to Khorog, which is the end/start point of the Wakhan, the scenery is incredible as the valley walls come closer together and you pass through more small villages. There’s not a huge amount of places to camp so we just enjoyed the drive and continued on.

With no real need to stop in Khorog for anything, we stopped in for lunch and to get some groceries, and continued driving west towards Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan. Khorog is a beautiful town which sits at 2,200 metres and is actually home to the second highest botanical garden in the world at 2,320 metres.

We kept driving, working our way back up another mountain range and found a nice spot to set up for the night on a green hillside with views of the mountains surrounding us.

A Game of Buzkashi in the Wakhan Corridor of Afghanistan

From Persian, the name Buzkashi translates as 'goat grabbing' an apt description of Afghanistan's national sport which sees horseback players fight for possession of a goat or calf carcass, ripping it to shreds in the process.

On a 22-day remote trekking expedition into the Wakhan corridor with Secret Compass, the team got an up close and personal showcase of this spectacle with the Pamir mountains stood tall in the background.

The Pamir Mountain range of Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor is a peaceful and extremely hard-to-reach part of the world where few have travelled and little has changed in a thousand years. It's home to the Wakhi and Kyrgyz nomads who live a traditional way of life on the outer limits of human habitation. They survive the lengthy and brutal winter thanks to their herds of yaks and sheep that provide them with milk and cheese, wool for warmth and dung to fuel their fires. In summer, they welcome traders into their yurt homes and -- more recently -- intrepid tourists who hire pack animals to explore the region.

Season 2 / Episode 9 - Overland Vagabond.

Buckle up! Lots of dash-cam clips of the Pamir Highway towards the Wakhan Corridor! The Panj River Valley that divides Afghanistan from Tajikistan for hundreds of kilometres is full of wild foxtail flowers, has impervious cliffs and is one of the bumpiest tracks in all of Asia. We also visit a few Zoroastrian temples and are wonderfully greeted by local kids.

The Wakhan Corridor in 90 Seconds

Let me take you on a quick trip through the Wakhan Corridor. This area of the world encompasses the borders of Tajikistan and Afghanistan and is considered relatively safe. I had no issues traveling through the region and quite enjoyed the amazing views despite the horrific road conditions. However, that's what makes the area so special because it's not that easily accessible.
