Montserrat was probably my favorite place on my whole Spain adventure. Come as we travel from Barcelona, up the mountain and make the pilgrimage to see Our Lady of Montserrat. This place is an incredible place just an hour or so outside of Barcelona. You can't miss it!

Whether you are into hiking or not, if you are in Barcelona do not miss out on Montserrat. Montserrat is only one hour away from Barcelona and easily reachable by public transportation. The Montserrat Mountain offers epic hiking routes but even if you are not into hiking adventures, the Montserrat Monastery is worth a visit. The Montserrat Monastery is a very historic place of Barcelona but also for Catalunya. The Montserrat Monastery can be visited everyday and you will be impressed by its beauty and the history you will learn about in the Monastery.

Montserrat is a must-visit for most tourists when in Barcelona or the Catalonia region, Spain. It has a natural park with many hiking trails and we hiked Sant Jeroni, the highest peak of the Montserrat region after visiting Montserrat Basilica.
It is around 60 kilometers northwest of Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia region and easily-accessible by public transportation.

The BEST Day Trip in Barcelona Spain ????????
In this video, we take a day trip from Barcelona to Montserrat, Spain's stunning mountain retreat just about an hour out of Barcelona in the Catalan mountains. We booked this excursion on TripAdvisor and it included transportation from the train station to Montserrat, the cogwheel train up the mountain and also a tapas lunch at a local winery, Oller Del Mac, a 1000 year old winery! In our opinion, this is the BEST Day trip to take while in Barcelona and definitely worth it!

Montserrat is one hour from Barcelona but bit of a hidden gem. Although plenty of tourists visit the monastery, the walking routes are very quiet. This place has a fascinating history with Napoleon and Himmler paying it a visit. Himmler specifically came looking for the holy grail which he believed would give him supernatural powers. It is easy to get here from Barcelona and a perfect day trip. We sleep in our car again and find out that many truck stops have showers to use for a small fee, a great budget travel hack.

How to get to Montserrat Mountain | Daytrip from Barcelona

Step 1: take train R5 from Espanya station in Barcelona
Step 2: stop at Aeri to take the cable cars or stop at Monistrol to take the train (Cremallera to go up)
When you're visiting Barcelona it's an absolute must to pay a visit to the Montserrat mountain range as well. It's just 45 minutes on train from the Barça center.
At Montserrat, which literally translates into sawtooth mountain, you can find the Benedictine Abbey Santa Maria de Montserrat, which hosts the Virgin of Montserrat.
