Travelling in Zambia, our Christmas 2020 break in Lusaka and Kafue National Park.

A few clips of our journey travelling down to Lusaka to pick up work permits and then on to Musungwa Lodge for a Christmas break. It was a lovely setting overlooking the lake and we got to see some wildlife - hippos, elephants, monkeys, zebras, impala and birds.
The food was great, and the chef was able to cater for our dietary requirements. The staff were very helpful and polite and we really enjoyed our stay.

Here is a link to the lodge. (This is not a sponsored link)

A review of the Mukambi Safari Lodge in Kafue National Park in Zambia

Francis Tapon interviews Ntanga, the Public Relations Representative for the Mukambi Safari Lodge in Zambia. It's in the middle of Kafue National Park, which is Zambia's biggest national park.

It's part of The Unseen Africa since many who go to Zambia just see Livingstone and Victoria Falls.

To Kafue National Park

Our transfer day in Zambia continues with another small plane ride to Kafue National Park. On the way we stop at a very colorful and interesting local outdoor market. It was fun and a total pleasure to talk to local Zambians and see true everyday life. Sometimes I think I enjoy more the things that happen on the way to travel attractions :)

Hippo Lodge, Kafue National Park, Zambia

Hippo Lodge is situated along the banks of the Kafue River in Kafue National Park, Zambia. Kafue National Park is one of Africa's largest game parks comprising 22,400km2 of breathtaking wilderness and the greatest species diversity of all the National Parks in Zambia. It hosts 158 species of mammal, 481 species of bird and 58 species of fish. This makes it a perfect destination for nature lovers, bird watchers and anglers alike.

Hippo is a small, vintage-style stone-built camp with four uniquely built private chalets and two rustic safari tents each with open-air stone bathrooms.

Days can be spent game-viewing on foot, by vehicle or boat, ferociously fishing the Kafue hot spots, ticking away at that bird list, unwinding with a sundowner in a natural hot spring, devouring delicious bush meals on idyllic islands in the Kafue River, taking an insightful trip back in time with a tour of a derelict copper mine, or catching that intensely beautiful sunset.....

Africa Travel Vlog: Exploring Lusaka

In this video I take you on another exciting walk exploring Lusaka in Zambia.
I decide to take a walk to the showgrounds to see the place where I learnt how to ride as a child. What has changed?
On the way there I meet several street vendors, and taste a Zambian delicacy.

Balloon Safari over the Busanga Plains

Our last day on safari... *sad* BUT, what a way to end it! We went on a hot air balloon flight over the Busanga Plains! A once in a lifetime experience, so amazing!

This is definitely one of the best days of safari ever, if not the very best of all. We woke up ridiculously early hour, at 4.14am, but as it was for a balloon safari it was more than worth it.

As soon as the sun started to rise, we went on a hot air balloon flight over the Busanga Plains in northern Kafue National Park. It was simply amazing! The plains are so open and flat, you can fly just several meters above the ground as well as high in the air. It was my first time in a hot air balloon, but I don't think there's a place that's more beautiful to fly in than the Busanga Plains.

The hot air balloon flight took us over places you can't reach by car as we flew over swamp area. Close to red lechwe, even a young one that was just born may be just an hour before we passed it. It looks like it's alone in the video, but don't worry, the herd was back at him/her when we passed them.

Ofcourse we saw many hippos and even some crocs on our hot air balloon safari, as we flew over water and wet areas.

After landing we enjoyed a champagne breakfast we had a long ride to the main lodge of Mukambi. There we had a late lunch directly followed by an evening game drive on which we saw great things.

There were many elephants around and also we found the 5 lions cubs again, who were having dinner and afterwards in a very playful mood. So much fun to just watch them play and practice hunting.

When night fell, it was difficult to shoot video. We did manage to see a genet. Later we even had a leopard crossing the road in front of us. We had a very good sight of the leopard, but it quickly disappeared in the bush.

All in all probably the best day on safari ever!

Crossing into Zambia???????? border by car | Katima Mulilo to Kalabo

In this video I finally cross the border from Namibia into Zambia at Katima Mulilo. Ill share some info on the 10 step process involved. Crossing the border into Zambia by car is a tedious process. Come prepared and the process will be a little easier.

From there I drive up to Mongu and then Kalabo for my visit to the Liuwa Plain National Park. Along the way I stay at the Kabula Tiger lodge, Mongu Country lodge (Mongu) and Golden lodge (Kalabo).

Based on my vehicles specifications, this was my experience:

Step 1: Port health. Check your vaccination certificate and complete a health arrival form for you.

Step 2: You, the health arrival form and passport proceed to immigration. Where they stamp both your passport and your health form. I am eligible for 90days at a time, but border officials are only allowed to authorize a 30 day stay. Entry permits need to be extended inside the country if you intend on staying longer.

Step3: Return the stamped health form to the lady at port health desk. No need to queue again, go straight to the front and hand it to her.

Step 4: Proceed to Interpol desk. I waited an hour and 10mins for this person to rock up, and hand them your passport, vehicle registration paperwork and police clearance (done in your home country)

First they compare the documentation against one another and then against your actual engine and chassis no on the vehicle.

If they are happy, they stamp your police clearance, and you fill in their book. You cannot proceed without that stamp.

Step 5: Proceed to customs (this is the only office outside the main building) for your temporary import permit. Nothing to do here. Hand in all the documents you have collected thus far and submit. Wait about 10mins, go and check the vehicle again as per your paperwork and all good. The TIP is only valid for 30days. No payments.

Step 6: Buy 3rd party insurance for your intended period of stay. I paid K522 for 3 months. You receive a disc that goes onto your windscreen. The lady even cuts it out for you , but it feels like I was overcharged according to the research I did beforehand.

Step 7: Proceed to a different customs desk a few cubicles away. Hand in all documentation. Provide name, email, telephone no and size of motor vehicle engine. They calculate your carbon tax dues. I paid K240 for my 2000 2.7i Toyota Hilux pick up.

Step 8: Proceed to Road Tax cubicle. They want to know how long you will be here and how far you intend to go. I think it is a flat rate…so not sure why they asked. I told them Ill be visiting all parts of Zambia and this is actually indicated on the paperwork. My total was US$38 and can only be paid in this currency. No credit card machines.
This is where I became impatient. The US$ I had was a bit used/worn and they refused to accept it. Not torn and taped back together, but normal wear and tear.

Step 9: Proceed to the exit gate. Before you reach it. Pay the local council tax K50. I believe this allows me to use the local roads. Judging from the size of the potholes, it is obviously not used to maintain the roads. Lol. Keep your receipt, there are roadblocks and people ask for it.

Step 10: The final exit gate. Submit all your paperwork, the guard checks that your disc is on your windscreen. It’s a quick verification that everything was completed. Then you are free to explore Zambia.

The entire process took 2.5hours. Just remember to renew your immigration permit and TIP before 30 days.

A bit of a different video from me showing our 30hr door to door journey from the UK to Zambia were we are missionaries. We flew out in December 2020 which was the last day of lockdown in England. I wanted to show a contrast between the roads and surrounding as well as a quick review of the food on our flights.

USA partner, Huffman Travel journeys to TIME + TIDE in Zambia with ease.

We get regular queries since borders have opened around just how easy is it in reality for internationals (and particularly US citizens) to travel to Zambia on a safari. We are truly grateful to USA Partner, Lauren Kroger from Huffman Travel. She has documented and shared her recent journey from the USA to Lusaka(with Emirates) and onto 2 of our TIME + TIDE properties Chinzombo in the South Luangwa & Chongwe on the Lower Zambezi to show you exactly what to expect.

Zimbabwe Christmas Safari 2020
