Traveling to ISLAMIC HOLY CITY! Trying STREET FOOD in Kairouan, Tunisia! السفر إلى القيروان

After a couple of days in Tunis, we headed a little bit further south to the UNESCO Heritage town of Kairouan. Kairouan was founded in 670 and is considered by many to be the 4th holiest city of Islam, after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem.

We spent two days exploring and eating in Kairouan, and while there wasn't a great abundance of food to try, this was compensated for by the food we did have being amazing, and the sites of Kairouan being truly spectacular!

This video also marks the end of our Tunisia series. Thank you to all the Tunisian people we met, the hospitalty and warmth we were greeted with made this trip truly special!

Traveling to TUNISIA! - AMAZING AIRBNB and trying STREET FOOD in Tunis! السفر إلى تونس

This is day 1 of our trip to Tunisia!

We departed from Stockholm Sweden and flew to Tunis via Istanbul, which meant a 10-hour night layover. On our first day in Tunis we settled into our BEAUTIFUL Airbnb, which was a stunning 19th-century apartment in traditional Tunisian style.

We then took the local train to the northern province of Sidi Bou Said where we had some Tunisian street food snacks! Having been on the move for quite a long time, we quickly got very tired and decided to head back to our Airbnb for some well-deserved sleep - and to prepare for a GIANT two-day food tour of the Tunis old town/medina!

WELCOME to TUNISIA - TOUR of the GREAT MOSQUE of KAIROUAN and SBEITLA ROMAN RUINS (vlog) القيروان ????????

We are in Tunisia to explore two of the major architectural monuments, the Great Mosque of Kairouan and the Roman Ruins of Sbeitla.

Our first stop is Kairouan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and important pilgrimage destination. In fact, it is the 4th most holy destination in the Muslim faith for its architectural masterpiece, the Great Mosque of Kairouan which dates back to 670 AD, making it one of the oldest mosques. The walled medina is also famous for being the filming location of the 1981 film Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Next, we visit a carpet shop where we explore the Berber and Tunisian carpets, a hand-made traditional craft in Tunisia.

Sbeitla (aka Sufetula and in Arabic سبيطلة‎ ) is a city in north-central Tunisia where we find the best-preserved Roman forum temples in Northern Africa. It was the entry point of the Muslim conquest of North Africa. The archeological site is massive and we explore the forum, baths, and theater.

Trying TUNISIAN food! Tunis local food and STREET FOOD tour! الغذاء التونسي

We spent two days in Tunisia's capital of Tunis eating amazing Tunisian food and meeting super friendly locals - some let us sample their food, some gave us free makroudhs (Tunisian pastries) and some shared a giant feast with us while teaching us about Tunisian culture! As you can probably tell, the hospitality is truly amazing in Tunisia, and I am so thankful to everyone who made us feel so welcome in Tunisia!

Now, onto the food - we started our day off at a small, hole-in-the wall restaurant where a very cheerful man served us two classics: lablabi and ojja. Lablabi is a hearty chickpea stew made with harrisa (a spicy chili paste), pieces of bread, tuna and olives. A hearty and delicious start to the tour! The ojja (chicken and vegetables fried together with a lot of harissa and olive oil) may very well have been our favorite dish of this whole tour! Mopping up that caramelized chicken sitting in a pool of spicy harrisa and olive oil was just too good to be true.

After trying some awesome Tunisian tea following our first meal, we made our way to what seemed to be a pretty popular restaurant - El Baraka! Here, we tried an eggplant mix with lots of olive oil and tomatoes which we scooped up with more bread, as well as their signature grilled fish which was super smoky, with crispy skin and extremely tender and juicy meat!

On our way back to our accommodation we tried some Tunisian sweets called makroudh. They were amazing! We were also given these for free by the owners of the stand making them, we are so thankful! The Tunisian hospitality shines through here, once again!

Finally, the next day we meet up with two locals - Yassine and Yassine. Together we enjoy a giant Tunisian feast at the legendary Dar El Jeld, a restaurant a bit fancier than what we're usually used to! The interior was made in traditional Tunisian style and was stunningly beautiful. We tried a lot of food, ranging from fluffy cous cous (Tunisia's national dish), unbelievably tender lamb and stuffed phylo pastries (brik)! Everything was amazing, and on top of that, we were able to learn a lot about Tunisian culture thanks to our new friends, with whom we had a great time!

Tunisia : From the Romans to the Arabs. The amazing Dougga and Kairouan holy city.

In this episode, we retrace some of the best preserved sites of ancient Rome.

We leave early in the morning in direction of the archaeological site of Dougga, located at approximately 112 kilometers from the city of Tunis. The way will take us a little less than two hours. The landscape is spectacular the region being very hilly and fertile.

Dougga is an ancient Numidian city that came under Punic rule before being reconquered by the Numidian Berber king Massinissa around 200 BC. Dougga was integrated into the Roman Empire after the battle of Thapsus in 46 BC. Situated on the ancient road, halfway between the metropolis Carthage and the garrison of Theueste, the current Tebessa in Algeria, the city developed rapidly. The Punics seized the place because of the quality of the fertile lands of the place and the region would have even ensured the supply of wheat to Rome.

You can still see the remains of the temple of Neptune, but especially that of Saturn which preserves some columns. Although little remains of the hippodrome and the Temple of Minerva, one can still see the remains of the Roman cisterns that today house some of the remains of the site.

The ruins of Dougga are impressive and the landscape is breathtaking. We come across the Temples of Mercury, Augustus and Fortune, as well as residential areas. But Dougga's surprise is to find there a Forum and a nearly intact Capitol, a mecca of Roman civic life. The view from the building is exceptional over the entire region and forms the heart of an almost completely reconstructed city.

After our visit of the archeological site classified by Unesco since 1997, we set course for Kairouan, the religious heart of Tunisia. The journey is 148 kilometers on country roads, a journey of more than two hours.

Kairouan which was the first Arab city in North Africa. According to historians, al-Qayrawân would be a word of Persian origin which probably refers to the caravanserai. Thus, the camp of the Muslim conquerors became their capital in the 7th century. This is why it is often said that Kairouan is the fourth holiest city in Islam, the holiest city in the Maghreb.

Today, it is a city of 140 000 inhabitants famous for its wool carpets and pastries.

The Great Mosque is probably the most beautiful legacy of this period. A visit to this grandiose building is a must for the tourist in Tunisia. You should moreover cross many of them during your visit.

The city of Kairouan is also known for its huge water basins built in the 8th century under the Umayyads.

The Barber's Mosque, known as the Mausoleum of Sidi Sahab, is a Tunisian zawiya located in Kairouan, outside the walls of the medina.

Kairouan | Great Mosque | Mawlid celebration | Exploring Tunisia

Took a trip to Kairouan in Tunisia to see the celebration of the Mawlid – Birthday of the Prophet (peace be on to him).

A great day with so much history, it was difficult to make a short video on the diverse experiences of the day.

After a 3-hour drive from Tunis, we arrived in Kairouan and when directly to our first stop: Aghlabid basins, large water reservoirs used in the middle ages to collect water for the area that was semi-arid.

We then walk through the street that was set up as a market area as they expect a large crowd to visit for the Mawlid. The crowd was large and it was hardtop walk but we eventually made our way to our next location: The Mausoleum of Sidi Sahab also known as the Mosque of the Barber, it houses the grave site of a companion of the Prophet (peace be onto him).

We then walked to the Medina in the old city and saw the souk, a traditional market place. It was fun walking through all the small alley ways seeing how they lived in ancient times.

We then went to the Great Mosque of Kairouan, officially named Great Mosque of Sidi-Uqba, a grand structure that is very important to the Islamic world. There was a celebration held in front the Mosque with a group singing traditional religious songs or Hadhra. The crowd was so massive but everyone was enjoying the live music, it was truly an amazing experience.

On our way back, we stopped at a bakery that specializes in Makroudh and we where lucky enough to get a demo of how its made!
