The BEST Ukrainian Street Food in Kyiv

Kyivska Perepichka is considered the FIRST Ukrainian fast food. It dates back to the early 80s and since then has climbed the list of top things to do and experience in Kyiv (Kiev), Ukraine. Almost 40 years later and this hole-in-the wall kiosk named Kyivska Perepichka has become a cult street food place. For less than a US dollar you get this pastry consisting of a sausage enclosed in deep fried dough. Perepichka seems to attract all categories of consumer populations and there seems to be no direct explanation to its success. Come join me for this classic Ukrainian street food item!

Restaurant address:

Kyiv is underrated and probably one of the best cities to visit in Europe. The capital of Ukraine should be on par with Rome, Paris and London. Kyiv is a beautiful destination high on interest, but in comparison to those mentioned; non touristy. Adding friendly people, delicious food, grand architecture, great weather, inexpensive... If you ever plan to visit Europe, then Kyiv should be on your list.

Kyiv exceeded my expectations big time. I rank the capital city of Ukraine as my favorite destination on my recent trip through parts of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe.

Ultimate UKRAINIAN FOOD TOUR of Lviv's Old Town | Ukraine

???????? LEARN MORE ABOUT UKRAINE:
???? TOURS BY LOCALS:
????????‍♀️ DIANA:

After exploring the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, for a few days, I set my sights on the city of Lviv in western Ukraine. Come with me as I explore the Old Town of Lviv!

Lviv is the biggest city in western Ukraine and is also thought of as the prettiest city in the country. It dates back to the 13th century and is considered one of the country’s main cultural centers.

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

My guide Diana from Tours by Locals and I started our tour of the city in Rynok Square, which has been the heart and soul of the city since the Middle Ages. It dates back to the second half of the 13th century.

The square is bounded by roughly 45 UNESCO buildings, as well as the City Hall, museums, restaurants and coffeehouses. There are also 4 quarters around it: Catholic, Armenian, Jewish, and Orthodox.

I loved the city. It reminded me a lot of Krakow in Poland. Lviv was part of a kingdom called Galicia, which included parts of Ukraine and Poland.

Our first stop was the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, a 14th-century Roman Catholic cathedral in the Catholic Quarter. Then, we saw the Boim Chapel, a Hungarian family’s burial chapel from the 17th century.

Past several coffee shops is Amadeus, a VIP restaurant that sells Galician food. The building Amadeus is in once belonged to the cathedral and served as the monks’ quarters.

I started with garlic toast and a crunchy European salad, followed by some homemade vodka made with honey, borscht, and Yorkshire pudding! Then, we finished up with eef roast and tender duck.

Next, we left with the owner of Amadeus and walked through the historical center to Under the Golden Star, a former pharmacy where the kerosene lamp was invented in 1853.

Our first dish was a citrusy Galician cheesecake with chocolate, lemon peel, and raisins. We also had cherry liqueur in a chocolate cup, chocolate cake, a strawberry eclair, and rum balls.

Then, we passed through Freedom Avenue near the Lviv Opera. From there, we headed over to the Vernissage handcraft market, where I bought some embroidered shirts and a carved wooden beer mug!

On Lesi Ukrainky Street, also known as 100 Pubs Street, we passed the Armenian Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary, which dates back to 1363. The Armenian community in Lviv dates back to the 14th century.

We continued on through the Old Town, east of Market Square, and saw the gorgeous Dominican Church and Monastery, which dates back to the 13th century. The present-day Baroque-style church was built in the 18th century.

After arriving back in Rynok Square, we made it to Lviv Coffee Manufacture, where you can buy coffee and souvenirs in the first two rooms. Downstairs is where they mine coffee !

I put on a hard hat as we went down to the coffee mine. They make your coffee and nuke it with a blowtorch to make the top a crispy layer like crème brulee!

From there, we saw their terrace and then headed to Lviv Handmade Chocolate. They make dozens of types of chocolate. After visiting the kitchen, I tried some hot chocolate with almond shavings on top. It was so thick, rich, and decadent!

We then continued on to a masochism shop called Masoch Café, where you can buy whips, ball gags, and other sex-related items. They whip you when you go inside!

There’s a hotel and coffee shop, and a lounge area for parties on the lower level. Then, we headed to Piana Vyshnia, which is a shop famous for their cherry liqueur. They have a huge red chandelier made from bottles on the ceiling!

The cherry liqueur was rich in cherry flavor. It’s the #1 drink in Ukraine after beer. I loved it!

Ukrainian Cuisine - 5 Foods To Try in Kiev, Ukraine Travel Food Video Transcript:

We are diving straight into another Ukrainian food (українські страви) video as you can see the food is already at the table so we're going to get rolling here. We're at a restaurant called O'Panas (ОПанас) which Sam discovered by chance when he was walking around Taras Shevchenko. I was just jogging in fact. It is located in the middle of a park and also the restaurant is like built around this giant tree. I know. It is so cool. Right now we're on the second floor and the tree trunk is just there.

Yeah. So it is a pretty cool setting. It feels very rustic, very traditional. We actually came here for dinner last night and they had live music playing the accordion. So we were like we need to come back for lunch.

or my appetizer I ordered a mushroom soup. Mushroom soup with dumplings (Грибна юшка з домашніми галушками у хлібній скоринці) and it said it came with bread crusts so I was like alright they'll bring me some bread.

I am having a Ukrainian salad (Закарпатський) here and it is pretty special. It has got um veal and it has goat cheese, it has zucchini and you can see that it has some tomatoes here. I'm just going to like. I see mushrooms as well. Mushrooms oh wow look. That looks so good and it comes in a honey mustard glaze.

Here is what I call a big sexy mug of beer. That is a proper pint. And I'm trying the local one. It is Lvivske 1715 (Львівське 1715). So that one probably comes from Lviv.

I am having a forest berries juice (Напій з лісових ягід).

I ordered cabbage rolls (Голубці з домашньою сметаною) and yeah these come stuffed with rice, beef, pork. Those look good.

This is duck brisket (Вогняна качка) and it appears to be cranberry sauce and then some caramelized oranges. Some caramelized oranges on the bottom.

I'm not going to lie there is probably nothing Ukrainian about this dish. We ordered apple strudel (Штрудель яблучний з морозивом).

So the price of that meal was 770 which was $30 USD Highly recommend this place.

Chicken Kiev (котлета по-київськи) - Eating Ukrainian Food in Kyiv, Ukraine travel food video transcript:

Alright Mister Foodie it is time for dinner. When in Kiev there is one dish you have to get for sure that being Chicken Kiev (котлета по-київськи). Oh yeah. So we've ordered this and we've ordered a whole bunch of other different things and we're just waiting for it to come. And it is always that exciting moment because I'm hungry.

Yes, so the complimentary appetizer is basically brown bread and it comes with pork fat (salo - сало) and pickle. Alright. Pork fat and pickle. A one-biter.

Alright, so I too am kick-starting the evening with some Ukrainian vodka (Horilka - горілка).

So I thought this was butter but no this is a salty cheese and then I thought this was butter but no apparently it is pork fat (salo - сало) with like garlic and some chives.

The wine has arrived. The wine. The cool thing about this wine is that it is a Ukrainian wine. It is a dry red and I'm really excited to try this because I did get to try an Odessa dry red at a wine bar the other night.

Nice salty herring (маринована оселедець). Wow. That is a really smooth fish.

For something that is pickled it is surprisingly juicy too.

I ordered some potato pancakes (Deruny - Деруни). Yeah. Fried potato pancakes (Deruny - Деруни). We're going to add a little bit of sour cream there.

So the main has arrived. This is what you came here for. The star of the meal. Yeah. Yeah. Chicken Kiev (котлета по-київськи).

This is basically breaded chicken and inside sometimes it can be stuffed. Every restaurant has a different way of preparing it. Stuffed with some goodness. It looks buttery. Yeah, it usually has like butter inside.

Trying my first Chicken Kiev (котлета по-киевски) in Kyiv (Киев). Haha.

First Chicken Kiev (котлета по-київськи) in Kiev (Київ).

Dessert has arrived. We arrived. We ordered Varenyky (Вареники) which are these little dumplings and we got two kinds. So I know we ordered the cherry kind and the other one is kind of a surprise.

Well, it is time for price point. That was 560 in the local currency what is just under $22 US dollars at the moment. Really good value. $11 per person. We feasted. It was really good.

That was just an awesome Ukrainian meal (українські страви). We've been really enjoying Ukrainian food (українська кухня) here in Kiev (Київ) and we are leaving tomorrow so it is a little bit sad. So this is our officially our last dinner here in Kyiv (Киев).

Korean Food in Kiev, Ukraine

Come join us in Kiev, Ukraine for a delicious Korean feast as we visit Arirang Restaurant (아리랑). Having not had Korean food in nearly half a year, we were craving some of our favorite Korean dishes, and we were absolutely over the moon excited when we found out Kiev, Ukraine had a number of places to choose from. After doing a bit of research we decided upon Arirang which was just a few metro stops away from where we were staying in Kiev. All in all we ordered the following dishes:

1) Kimchi-Bokkeum-Bap (김치볶음밥) Korean kimchi fried rice
2) Sundubu-jjigae (순두부찌개) Korean tofu soup
3) Pajeon (파전) Korean pancakes with scallions and seafood

The food was quite authentic for the most part and the coolest thing was that we got a generous amount of Banchan (반찬 - 飯饌)
including some of our favorites like Kimchi (김치). Overall, we'd highly recommend Arirang for anyone with a craving for Korean cuisine in the Ukraine.

Korean Food Review in Kiev, Ukraine Travel Video Transcript:

Today is a special day. We haven't had Korean food in ages. Ages! Ages!

We were actually racking our brains and thinking like when was the last time and we believe it was in Pokhara, Nepal. Which is months ago. Months ago. That is half a year ago. So when we came to Kiev (Kyiv - Київ - Киев) and we're kind of here for a little while. Yeah. We actually researched online to see if there was any Korean restaurants. We've been craving it for ages.

Uh huh. And we found one. There is actually one that is quite highly rated. It is Arirang (아리랑).

Orders have been placed and I don't think they're going to be very many surprises. We have our favorites. We tend to order the same things over and over again. But we do get six free little dishes. Side dishes. Banchan (반찬 - 飯饌).

So excited. And one thing I did order a little bit different that I normally tend to get Dolsot Bibimbap if I haven't had it for a while but I ended up getting Kimchi-Bokkeum-Bap (김치볶음밥) which is the kimchi fried rice. And yeah, we ordered mandu as well. No! We got the pajeon (파전) instead. Oh right. We got pajeon (파전).

And I got sundubu jjigae which is what I always get. I just love my tofu stew. And you know it is like August here. It is getting a little bit chilly in Kiev (Kyiv - Київ - Киев) so yeah.

Oh, that was so much food. So so much food. Yeah, we did a pretty good job I think finishing the mains. We polished off the mains. We put a really good kind of struggled with the side dishes. We put a good dent in the side dishes. Yeah, we didn't finish them though. But yeah, we are done. Defeated. Time it is time to ring the ding dong. Ding the ding da dong.

Well, well. What a beautiful way to end the meal. They brought complimentary watermelon which I think might supak in Korean. Correct me if I'm wrong. Isn't that pumpkin?

No, hopak is pumpkin. Oh, okay. A lot of paks in there. Yeah, anyways, it came to 491 which was $19 USD and I thought that was great value because we got three main dishes, we got tonnes of banchan (반찬 - 飯饌). Tonnes of side dishes. We forgot to show you, I had Georgian red wine and we also got a big thing of tea to share. So yeah, that is pretty good. I mean we're talking about like nine something a person to have a really nice authentic Korean meal here in the Ukraine. Yeah, that was awesome. I would come back here again for sure. Highly recommend this place. The name is Arirang ((아리랑)). Arirang tata. Tata. Bye.

A TYPICAL CANTEEN IN RUSSIA | What food do Russian people eat? ????????

Heading to a 'Stolovaya' or canteen to try some typical Russian food. You can find Stolovaya's (or typical Russian / Soviet cafe's) all over the former Soviet Union, from Ukraine to Kazakhstan, and they are the best place to try local favourites at the best prices.

These typical Russian food halls have all sorts to choose from; from Ukrainian Borsch, to Russian Olivier salad, Solyanka soup and Chicken Kiev with mash potato. The food in these Stolovaya are typical of what an average Russian family would eat at home. We went to a fairly new one in the centre of Adler (Sochi) but they come in all forms, from the modern to the more Soviet. ????????

A TYPICAL CANTEEN IN RUSSIA | What do food Russian people eat? ????????

Transcarpathian FOOD in UKRAINE WINE CAPITAL - Snails and Wine | Berehove, Ukraine

???????? LEARN MORE ABOUT UKRAINE:
???? TOURS BY LOCALS:
????????‍♀️ DIANA:

My time in western Ukraine continued in one of its most beautiful regions, Transcarpathia, near the Polish, Hungarian, and Slovakian borders. Come with me as I take you to experience authentic Transcarpathian food in Berehove, Ukraine!

My day began with my friend and guide Diana from Tours by Locals at Chateau Chizay in the wine capital of Transcarpathia, Berehove. We were right on the Hungarian border, and Chateau Chizay is the best winery in the area.

???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

Inside, I met everyone and saw the gift shop, where they sell 25 types of wine, including kosher wines, pinot blanc, cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, and many others. They also have a big, old-school barrel that used to be used to press the grapes. It’s now used for leaving tips!

Next, we saw the Chateau Chizay Museum, where you can learn about the history of the wine-making practices in the region. I loved the giant barrels!

The museum was one large room where you can learn about the wine-making process and the region’s history of wine-making.

Then, we headed to the wine tasting room for a Premium tasting, which includes cheese, crackers, chocolates, and nuts, and 8 different wines.

We started with a dry, white 2020 Chersegi. It was clean and easy to drink and not too fruity. Next was a dry rose called Sakura Transcarpatia. It was very young and pink and had a strong, fruity, strawberry flavor.

The dry red cabernet came from their best wine year ever and was smooth and bold. It would be great with a big steak! We followed that with a semi-sweet white called Moscato Ottonel, which I loved. It was so good!

Their semi-sweet red blend was dry and fruity but also easy to drink. Next was pinot grigio with lime and mint, which was semi-sweet. It’s the first wine they ever exported to the U.S. It had such a unique flavor!

The Troyanda dessert rose is served in a small glass and smelled like port and cognac. I loved it so much! It costs only $15 and took me back to my time in Portugal! Their grape white blend was also excellent! I loved the flavor of the indigenous grapes!

Then, we drove 5 minutes through the historical center of Berehove to Chizay Mala Hora, which looked like another chateau with vineyards behind it.

In the kitchen, I saw the snails, which are frozen and stuffed with butter and baked. They also made some stews, mushroom soup, beetroot salads, and more. They put so much love into the food!

Back at our table, we started with the snails from the vineyard. They were amazing with the garlic butter. I followed it with a beetroot salad with pork, cabbage, and greens. I loved the honey-mustard dressing.

Next was the mushroom soup, which was so creamy. The entire Transcarpathia region is famous for its mushrooms. The soup was earthy and oily and would be the perfect hangover cure! It contained more mushrooms than cream!

Next was the turkey and white mushroom sauce with mashed potatoes and some pinot noir. It felt like a Thanksgiving dish! The turkey was so fresh and the mashed potatoes were nice and creamy. It was a nice, heavy dish and one of my favorite dishes of my trip so far. The pinot noir was light, dry, fruity, and not too sweet.

Next was deruny, a type of potato pancake with sour cream, avocado, arugula, and trout. It was thick, creamy, fatty, and so fresh! Everything was phenomenal! Then, I finished with some espresso. I loved this restaurant!

Ukrainian Food Review - 5 traditional dishes to eat in Lviv, Ukraine:

It is lunchtime here in Lviv (Львів) and we tried to find the most traditional Ukrainian restaurant that we could and that is how we ended up at Seven Piggies (Сім поросят) and yeah I can tell you taxidermy is really popular. Lots of stuffed animals.

She brought us something called Banusz and I believe this is some kind of sheep's cheese (brynza) with like looks like bacon so I'm just going to try it on bread. Sam with the fancy waterwheel right behind him. Right behind me. Alright, time to try this. Banosh (Банош).

We also ordered wine. And we got a bread basket. And yeah, usually I found when you order a bread baskets here in Ukraine (Україна) you get both brown and white bread which is cool.

We got a Cabernet it is made from the Ukraine and most of the wine from Ukraine apparently comes from Odessa.

We've ordered something called Kremslyky (КРЕМЗЛИКИ В ГЛЕЧИКУ) and I need to break this baby. I can't actually lift the bread basket off.

So in here we've got some pork. We have potato pancakes (КРЕМЗЛИКИ В ГЛЕЧИКУ) . We have this like creamy sauce with dill and carrots and garlic and it all looks really really good.

I've now had it about 3 or 4 times and it is dish now that whenever we go out and order like traditional Ukrainian food (українська кухня). It is a stample.

They have actually named this dish after the restaurant and it is the 7 pigs and it is a huge pork leg (ГОМІЛОЧКА “СІМ ПОРОСЯТ”). Oh, this meat looks so tender.

Actually it is not a cheese sauce it is a mustard sauce. Oh, it has got a kick to it. Yeah. Totally different than what I thought.

Another side dish we ordered is Varenyky (ПЕЛЬМЕНІ “ВІД ВУЙКА КОЦЬО”) which are the dumplings but these ones are black. Yeah. So we haven't had this before. It looked interesting. Yeah, we've never tried the black dumplings (ПЕЛЬМЕНІ “ВІД ВУЙКА КОЦЬО”). All I know is that they are stuffed with pork and veal.

Thankfully dessert is a smaller portion than everything else because yeah we're stuffed. We're stuffed.

And this is like a Ukrainian cake style of cheesecake (ТОРТ “СИРНИК”). And it has got like a chocolate topping and I think I've been able to see what might potentially be dried pieces of fruit in the middle.

Cheesecake with raisins.

That is so good. Because like this is just like pure cheesecake. There isn't really a bottom layer. It is just pure dense thick cheesecake (ТОРТ “СИРНИК”). Just the way I like it.

Kiev, Ukraine is next up on our travel vlog. We had a 10 hour stop over in the middle of our 30 hour journey from Amsterdam to Bangkok. We were delirious with sleep deprivation but tried to make the most of it.
