Why Getting A Room In The First Place?
This is surely not for you if you're bringing your whole family to Medellin or if you don't like to live with other people.
But for people on a budget, that don't mind sharing an apartment with one or more different people, this option can save you a lot of money. Depending on where your roommates are from you might be able to improve your Spanish and get to know the culture better.
The great thing is, that sharing an apartment is really common in Medellin. A lot of people, foreigners and Colombians, are willing to share their apartment in order to save on rent and to get to know more people. Age is usually not an issue at all.
How To Find A Room?
The most common used websites to find a room are the following:
Airbnb (short and long term rentals)
Airbnb is surely one of the most common websites people use when it comes to finding an apartment. When looking for a room, we recommend asking if you could see it before booking.
That way you can check if the apartment is the way you imagined it to be and more importantly you get to know you, future roommates.
And when you think it is a fit, you might even consider negotiating the price, especially if you are planning to stay for a longer period of time.
CompartoApto (long term rental)
CompartoApto is another really popular website to find a room in Medellin. Other than Airbnb, CompartoApto is usually used by locals and not so many foreigners. In case your Spanish is not enough to communicate, you might consider starting on Airbnb till your Spanish is good enough.
The difference between the two websites are surely the prices, usually, you get to pay more on Airbnb. Colombians usually have a better deal with renting an apartment and, therefore, won't charge you that much.

Laureles is an area of Medellin Colombia and a popular destination for locals and people traveling on vacation. this was my second trip to Medellin, Colombia and definitely my best experience. If you choose to travel to Medellin, Colombia consider staying in one of the many apartments for rent in Medellin.

In today's video, my friends Michelle, Andrea, and I set out for an afternoon in Poblado, Medellín Colombia to give you a glimpse of what you can purchase for only $10.
But the point of this video wasn't to say, Look how inexpensive Colombia is to travel, because price and value are relative, and you already know that Medellín can be a bargain depending of course on where you're coming from and which currency you exchanged upon arrival. (Mind you, we were in hands-down the most expensive part of the city.)
So rather than rehash that old story, I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you to put your time, energy, and money towards the things you want MOST... whatever that may be.

Explore El Poblado Medellin. We're Shocked this is here! What to do + Where to Eat. Travel Colombia
While in Medellin, Colombia we spent a day checking out the area called El Poblado to find the best things to do in the district. El Poblado is known for being touristy and trendy. It’s full or restaurants, bars, boutiques and coffee shops. It’s also becoming a big hub for digital nomads.
We start off the video by showing you the amazing view from our apartment rental in El Poblado (which also has a rooftop pool).
Because it was a Sunday, and we were in a trendy area we decided to go in search of brunch and ended up at a place called 37 Park.
Later, as we explore the neighourhood we check out all the different types of restaurants/foods that are available there.
We found it frequently rained in the afternoons in Medellin, and this day was no different. A big thunderstorm came in so we took shelter in a craft beer bar called BBC.
Lastly we took an Uber back towards our apartment to a very local bar/restaurant called La Otra Estacion which is quite affordable and has a small but delicious menu.

So many people have asked and expressed concern about the safety of Colombia and in particular Medellin when we mentioned going there. People have many outdated notions of Medellin and immediately thing of drugs and cartels. In this video we discuss our feelings of safety while exploring the city!

To start things off we take public transportation using both the metro and cable cars (which are integrated into the public transportation system) to reach Arví Park. At first we were a bit confused about where to go in the park but eventually we come across a beautiful picnic park with walking trails, a stream and a bridge.
The next day we head out on a free Medellin Walking Tour with Zippy Tours ( to explore the neighbourhood of Comuna 13. Back when the city was run by cartels and Pablo Escobar this was considered one of the most dangerous neighbourhoods in the entire world. Nowadays its a vibrant area with amazing street art/graffiti that tells the story of this community. The tours are given by members of the community so you get to hear first hand experiences of living there, and how the community pulled through. Along the way we heard many stories, saw some amazing street art, went up the famous escalators, and saw some fabulous street dancing.
All in all we felt very safe throughout those two days spent in Medellin but we always advise everyone to do their research and be aware of their surroundings.

In this video, Sam and Tacha are explaining some reasons for choosing Colombia and in particular Medellin and not another place in Latin America. Living in Medellin is not always easy but we still love it.
We will take you back on the journey when we had to figure out, where we want our new home to be. We traveled through many Latin American countries, especially Panama and Ecuador. But we found our personal gem in Colombia, especially Medellin.
In this video, we will tell our expat story why we chose Colombia and especially Medellin, Colombia. This covers why we love living in Medellin Colombia and why we stay here long term.
It's not easy to decide to leave your home country but it's even more difficult to find the right place to live!
We knew it's the right time to leave Switzerland, but we didn't know where to go. Of course, we made research, watched documentaries and more. But no documentaries, vlogs or travel stories, can really help you decide where the right place is.
Before making a decision you have to see the country, in order to decide if it is really as you expected it to be.
Medellin, Colombia was way more than only a positive surprise to us. We were in shock, in shock how beautiful everything is, how developed, how friendly the people are and also educated.
As a first worldlier you tend to think that you are higher educated than most others, have a better mindset ..blah blah blah
But this is just not true, never underestimate people you have never met before! The people here of course may have other work mentalities and other interest, but we met a lot educated, intelligent, warmhearted Colombian a long our way. That we never expected to find.
We're glad to be a part of the change in Colombia, we are honored to tell the world how great it is!

Things to do in Medellin range from free tours over parks and excursions to the transformed poorer neighborhoods to nightlife and tours to see the impressive panorama from El Penol.

— About Exploring Colombia —
Colombia, a country which many only know because of it’s violent past, has been on my list since I went to South America for my first long-term trip in 2012. 6 Years later and with 5 weeks to spend it was finally time to properly explore my country number 9 on the continent.
For the first part of the trip I’ll be traveling with my mate David to the historical city of Cartagena, some picturesque Carribean islands and to the city of Medellin where we get to learn about the violent past and the transformation of the country. After a few days in the capital Bogota I’ll be joined by my good friend Stefan to learn salsa and take on some outdoor adventures in Cali before heading up to Santa Marta where we checkout the most beautiful beaches, float down rivers and hike through the mountains.

We hope we can give some of you a better idea of how Medellin is like and things you should be prepared for before making the big move.
Medellin has so many advantages when living here. I mean the weather couldn't be any better, the Cost Of Living is great and being in a huge beautiful country like Colombia, you have so much to discover. The culture is also a big factor that makes the difference to other countries, they love to dance, to sing and to party. They are really family oriented and love to invite other people to join them.
But of course, with every advantage there disadvantages like people being late all the time. You never know if they will show up, come late, or even be on time. You always need a plan B in case the person doesn't show up at all. The bureaucracy is a hassle and it's never the same, they change laws really fast and sometimes they apply it and sometimes they don't, therefore you never know what you get. Also, you should try to avoid Rush-hour, the traffic is horrible and it can take you twice as long to get where to your destination.
Active retirees will surely be a fit to Medellin same with entrepreneurs that want to start their own business and of course the digital nomads.
