All of the stress of getting the visa and acting as a business consultant is behind me now, and I have REALLY ENJOYED exploring the capital and biggest city of Tripoli. This city really caught me by surprise!

My intention in making this video is to give you a glimpse of the local life and tell you what it's like to visit Libya as a tourist from my perspective.

Out of the 191 countries I've been to, LIBYA has been the most challenging and most expensive visa I've ever gotten (by far). My anxiety levels were at an all time high before entering Libya -- mostly because I had to pretend to be an oil consultant (Libya only issues business visas, not tourist visas). If they found out that I was a journalist, then you may not have heard from me for a long, long time.

In this video, you will find some of the unseen shots that I took as I flew from Tunis, Tunisia to Tripoli, Libya during the height of the Libyan Civil War. I do not recommend traveling there until the situation clears up.

Libya is one of the most interesting desert countries and it is gradually opening its doors to the outside world. It is a veritable treasure trove of history. Ancient art and culture of various epochs as well as the fascinating exotic flair of the Orient make Libya a wonderful and fascinating holiday destination. The capital, Tripoli, awakes early in the morning as fishermen return from their nocturnal work at sea along with their catch which is fresh and tasty and ready for market. In antiquity Tripoli was called Oea and was one of the three cities of Tripolitania. Seventy kilometres west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its Theatre has been rebuilt and is an impressive structure that dates back to the second century A.D. It was originally built by the Romans who came here after the Phoenicians and gave the city a completely new appearance. It could accommodate up to five thousand onlookers. Just like the country’s former explorers we venture further and further into the desert and spend the night in Kirkiba Camp in circular straw huts at the foot of huge sand dunes. Next day we visit Garma, now in ruins, but whioch around two thousand years ago was the capital of the Garamantes Realm. From the Sahara we travel to the country’s eastern Mediterranean coast and to ancient Cyrenaika, the largest city in today’s Benghazi. Of the historic city of the Pentapolis, the Greek five-city alliance, nothing remains today as it is now covered by modern city buildings. Magnificent history, untouched coastlines and endless desert landscapes with oasis settlements, salt lakes, rock paintings and Berber towns: Libya, a little known land in amazing North Africa.

How Safe Is Libya for Travel?

Full safety review:

Libya is a country located in North Africa, with a coastline along the Mediterranean Sea and in between Egypt to the east and Tunisia to the west.

It also shares borders with Algeria, Chad, Niger, and Sudan.

Geographically, it isn’t too diverse as more than 90% of the country is covered in desert or semidesert.

Culturally, you can definitely broaden your views by visiting Libya: you can see the Leptis Magna, a prominent city of the Roman Empire whose ruins are located in Al Khums, on the coast where the Wadi Lebda meets the sea.

Overall Libya isn't safe and many governments are advising their citizens against traveling to Libya because of the current conflict following the bloody war to oust the Gadaffi dictatorship. This country is dangerous and if you're currently in Libya, make plans to leave as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

LIBYA.. WHO KNEW? Today was one of those days where I truly can't believe what I saw with my own two eyes.

Located in Northern Libya, Leptis Magna is widely considered to be (one of) the world's most preserved ancient Roman cities.

I had the entire place to myself and I have been in a constant state of shock by how impressive this is. By now, I've had the chance to thoroughly explore 5 or 6 Roman cities -- and Leptis Magna is by far the best.

I'm struggling to explain any further in words. Just watch the video and you'll understand what I'm saying!
