Travel guide to Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia | Aliz’s Wonderland

Santa Cruz de la Sierra was a totally different world after visiting Uyuni, La Paz and Copacabana. The mountain scenery and high altitude changed to humid weather, modern vibes and less poverty. I’d say not authentic Bolivia. However, we liked this other type of Bolivia with its exceptional flora and fauna.

A complete guide to Copacabana and Lake Titicaca - Bolivia travel vlog | Aliz’s Wonderland

Copacabana is situated at Lake Titicaca, which is the world's largest navigable high-altitude lake with its 8372 km2, sitting at an altitude of 3812 m. The lake is situated between the mountains of Peru and Bolivia.
We travelled to Copacabana after 1,5-week travelling in Chile and Bolivia, so our 5 days there were very relaxed. Don’t worry, staying 3-4 days would be also enough to see the most significant spots around Copacabana.

Let’s see how we spent 5 days in Copacabana:

0:22 DAY 1 - TRAVELLING TO COPACABANA
Copacabana is approachable by taxi, rented car or as part of a tour. We chose the EASIEST AND CHEAPEST WAY and travelled there by bus from the Central Bus station in La Paz, which took 4 hours for us. We bought a bus ticket online on Tickets Bolivia, which offers transportation by multiple companies. Direct buses depart from La Paz at 7:30 am, 8 am and 1:30 pm.
After a 2-3 hours scenic drive we arrived at the boat station of Tiquina, where all passengers had to take off the bus, buy a boat ticket and cross the strait by a small boat. On the other side, we waited for our bus, which was transported by a little ferry.

Tickets Bolivia -
For more information about how to get there, prices and Copacabana read my blog post:

1:54 DAY 2 - A TRIP TO ISLAS FLOTANTES (FLOATING ISLANDS)
Islas Flotantes (Floating Islands) are located in Lake Titicaca and are accessible by boat from Copacabana. Tickets can be purchased at many places in Copacabana, though at tourist agencies it might be more expensive. We bought our return tickets in a kiosk at the lakeshore (at the end of Av 6 de Agosto).
During the 20 minutes ride, you can adore the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Real, green hills and blue vastness of the lake.

4:39 DAY 3 - DISCOVERING THE LAKESHORE
Copacabana sits between two hills, Cerro Calvário and Horca del Inca. The bay is home to many boats, so this part of the lake isn't recommended for swimming.
Trying out local dishes is part of travelling and discovering new cultures. THE MUST-TRY FOOD IN COPACABANA IS TROUT (trucha) and the perfect place to try it out is the lakeshore. Next to the harbour, you’ll find many kiosks serving trout. The menu and the prices are almost the same at every food stall.

5:12 DAY 4 - ISLA DEL SOL DAY TRIP
Isla del Sol is not just an ordinary island. It’s situated in Lake Titicaca and home to Inca ruins, scenic paths, cute llamas and other animals. You only have to enjoy this sacred atmosphere, get ready for high altitude and walk slowly.
During our Bolivian trip (March of 2020), ONLY THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE ISLAND WAS OPEN FOR VISITORS. Unfortunately, the northern and southern part had some differences again.
Read the blog post about our 1 day trip in Isla del Sol, Bolivia:
And watch the Isla del Sol travel video:

6:05 DAY 5 - RELAXING AND CLIMBING CERRO CALVARIO
The peak of Cerro Calvario dominates the lakeshore of Lake Titicaca at Copacabana. As I mentioned before, Copacabana lies at a high altitude, so WALKING AND CLIMBING CAN BE CHALLENGING.
The breathtaking panorama of the lake and the harbour will compensate for the exhausting hike. From the peak, you can also watch the sunset and its reflection on the surface of Lake Titicaca.

7:55 DAY 6 - TRAVELLING TO LA PAZ, EL ALTO AIRPORT
Buses depart from Plaza Sucre, the main square of Copacabana. For returning to La Paz, we chose a local bus, which wasn’t that comfortable but it stopped at El Alto, so we could reach the airport easier.

Santa Cruz, Bolivia. 4K Walk

Santa Cruz is a city in east-central Bolivia. It is located in the hot tropical lowlands at 1,365 feet (416 m) above sea level.

It was founded in 1561 by Spaniards from Paraguay on the site of present-day San José de Chiquitos, but was repeatedly attacked by Indians until 1595, when it was relocated to its present site on the Pire River and renamed Santa Cruz de la Sierra In 1811 the inhabitants declared their independence from Spain. It was only temporarily recaptured by Royalist forces after the declaration of independence from Spain, and in 1950 the highway to Cochabamba was completed. The railroads serve Brazil, Argentina, and southern Bolivia, and the city's international airport is the busiest in Bolivia.

Santa Cruz is the largest city in Bolivia. It is a huge city located in the middle of the tropical lowlands.

Despite its size, the city is not very popular among foreign tourists. There are many reasons for this, but the most common is its location.

It is located in the eastern part of Bolivia, close to the border with Brazil, and slightly off the route through Bolivia - La Paz, Potosí and Uyuni.

Santa Cruz is home to several educational institutions, including the Autonomous University Gabriel René Moreno (1879). There are also museums and art galleries of natural history and ethnography. In addition, about 60 miles (100 km) southwest of Santa Cruz is Samaypata, a pre-Columbian site that was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. Population (2001) 1,113,582; (preliminary 2010) 1,616,100.

This modern city is growing rapidly and feels like a city in transition: new restaurants, bars, apartment complexes and stores are everywhere, as well as a thriving local nightlife scene.

In the old narrow streets of downtown, cabs and horse-drawn carriages compete with each other for a ride. In the square, old men doze over chicha (an alcoholic corn drink) and teenagers play loud music.

Santa Crucenio is home to people from different periods of Bolivian history, from Russian immigrants to the Japanese community.

A day trip to Isla del Sol, Bolivia | Aliz’s Wonderland

Travelling to Lake Titicaca, Copacabana or La Paz? Don’t miss the magical island of Isla del Sol.
Isla del Sol is not just an ordinary island. It’s situated in Lake Titicaca, so on the way there and also from the island you can enjoy the view of snow-capped mountains, green hills and the blue vastness of Lake Titicaca. Furthermore, the island is home to cute llamas and other animals. You only have to enjoy this sacred atmosphere, get ready for high altitude and walk slowly.

Want to learn more about Isla del Sol? Visit my blog and read my post to find out how to spend a day in Isla del Sol, Bolivia.

CHECK OUT HOW WE SPENT OUR 1 DAY TRIP IN ISLA DEL SOL, BOLIVIA.

00:17 Our small boat left Copacabana harbour at 8:30 am, just next to the kiosk, where we bought our tickets the previous day. After a 1,5 hours boat ride, we arrived at its harbour at Temple of Sun, which is located on the southern part of the island.

02:34 From there, we started to walk north to visit a viewpoint called Cerro Queñuani. On our way, we also met horses, donkeys and could spot a few llamas in the distance. From the viewpoint of Cerro Queñuani, the panorama was fascinating to the peninsula of Copacabana, other islands and the deep blue lake. A stone mausoleum was also located on the top and cute llamas were eating grass next to the path. A baby llama was very interested in us, it even came close to us.

03:58 Before having lunch, we climbed another hill called Palla Kasha. The slope looked steep, though hiking for us took around 30 minutes. The panorama from the viewpoint totally compensated us for the suffering at high altitude. Cerro Palla Kasha is the highest point in the southern part, so from there you can even have a view to the northern part of the island and the village of Yumani.

05:45 After the hike, we deserved lunch with a view! So we headed back to the village to find a perfect lunch spot. On the western road of the hill, there are many restaurants with a panorama to the lake. Our chosen restaurant was Restaurant Pachamama with its fantastic terrace and colourful flowers. The must-try dish is the local trout in Isla del Sol and around Lake Titicaca.

06:44 After the tasty trout and sunbathing, it was time to go to the harbour, which took 25 minutes to the port of Yumani through curvy streets and stairs of the village. The last part was the Inca Steps, more than 200 steps leading to the lakeside.

07:11 The boat departed at 3 am with us sitting on the upper deck again.
