Travel Guide to Lesotho

►Read the blog:

In this episode I take you to the the Sky Kingdom of Lesotho, the highest country in Africa. This country has the highest low point on earth.

The entire country is 1000 meters above sea level. It's located about 7 hours drive south of Johannesburg and 5 hours west of Durban. For the next 72 hours I am going to be showing you what to see and do in Lesotho!

This is Semonkong the horse capital of Lesotho. It's located in the central part of the country. Right now we are going to walk around the market and buy a typical beanie follow me. Follow me lets go shopping!

After a bit of a negotiating I got three for 100 Rand. The beanies are made out of wool and it's the most traditional thing you can buy.

Welcome to Semonkong Lodge! If you're looking to explore central Lesotho this is the place to stay. They have a restaurant, 25 rooms and they are very close to Maletsunyane Fall's the highest single drop waterfall in the southern hemisphere. You can go pony trekking and explore Semonkong.

Next up we head to Maliba Lodge on the northern side of Lesotho. They have 6 chalets and 4 river chalets. A few different activities you can do in the area are horseback riding, village tour and a massage. They have heated floors, beds and wife.

We head out on horseback for a two hour trek in the mountains of Tsehlanyane National Park. After an incredible trek we head to the near by village of Hamadi to experience local life. At the local bar I tried some Lesotho beer which was bitter but traditional :)

LESOTHO: The Country Located ENTIRELY inside of South Africa

Lesotho, formerly known as Basutoland, was renamed to the Kingdom of Lesotho upon independence. It is a country in Southern Africa with an area of over 30,000 square kilometers and a population of about 2 million people. It was previously a British Protectorate. Lesotho gained independence on October 4th 1966 and is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Commonwealth of Nations and Southern African Development Community(SADC). Maseru is its capital and largest city. ‘Lesotho’ loosely translates to ‘The Land of the Sotho’. Its people are referred to as Basotho and its currency is Lesotho loti and South African rand.

Lesotho’s position is unusual. It is the Southernmost landlocked country in the world. It is the largest of the world’s three independent states completely surrounded by another country’s territory. San Marino and Vatican City are the other two states. Lesotho is also the only state of its kind outside of the Italian peninsula and is a microstate as well. The country is simply an enclave.

In this video, you are going to discover Lesotho through many facades, so please watch it until the end.

Welcome to Lesotho - Rough Guide

Toby is in Lesotho in Southern Africa to explore a country of amazing natural diversity and an extremely friendly population.

How Safe Is Lesotho for Travel?

Full safety review:

Lesotho is a country located in Southern Africa, and is often referred to as the Kingdom in the Sky due to its altitude — it has the highest lowest point in the world (1400m) and is the only country in the world to be entirely above 1000m!

Lesotho is completely surrounded by South Africa and has many attractions to offer which make it an adventurous holiday destination.

When it comes to unique adventures Lesotho has to offer, look no further than the Kome Caves – the staggering cave houses once built by the Basotho people with a purpose to form the cannibals.

Overall Lesotho is generally considered a safe country to travel to. However, even though it has served as a safe haven and a sanctuary from all the troubles that are hitting the rest of Africa pretty hard - Lesotho also has its issues with crime, both petty and violent, illnesses and poverty.

A Journey through Rural Lesotho | Travel Documentary

Lesotho Kingdom in the Sky. On this episode of Adventure Calls we travel through Rural Lesotho in a rented 4WD Nissan which had been outfitted for true adventure. We would go horse trekking deep in the Lesotho mountains, visit one of the world tallest waterfalls and drive through the roughest terrains imaginable towards South Africa. We also got an opportunity to donate school materials which was donated by fans, friends and family.

You can learn more about the Malealea Development Trust here where you can also donate to those in need

Lesotho was our very first travel documentary that we filmed.

Lesotho is a fantastic place to visit and a place we highly recommend. If you stay longer and plan to drive around the more rural areas you should highly consider bringing or renting a good 4WD car (the cheapest and easiest option is in Johannesburg, South Africa). Many places are inaccessible without.

We hope you will enjoy this video and please subscribe to our channel for more adventures around the world. Please leave any comments and questions below. We love to interact with our viewers :)

A huge thanks to Darren Lowe for composing our theme music tracks. Fantastic job my friend.

Thanks to Marconi De Morais for helping with the final audio.

Have to know:#
1. Rental Cars from south africa need permission to get into Lesotho.
2. Visa on arrival was not a problem in our case and very quick.
3. Check border closing times for your trip. No 24h at al points!
4. Check petrol for your trip and calculate 4WD.
5. Don´t await for big local help to navigate.
6. No road signs in the north west.
7. The main roads are in good and mostly in very geed conditions. If you go on side roads 4WD needed.

My travel report:
It was 2008 in Johannesburg at dinner. Our Work was so much advanced in time schedule and for tomorrow no chance to continue. So what to do. OK let us go to Lesotho! OK look on a paper Map (no google maps on this time on a smart phone;-)minimum 4 hour drive to the border. Start at 2 am? We go to bed and most of the crew take it with a pinch of salt.
2 am I stand on side of the rental car and I am surprised. Someone was waiting. We start with three person in our rental. One comment it is not possible to drive with the rental over border from South Africa this trip not works. No problem if I pick up the car I get a permission for this case! OK
We arrived early in the morning at the border as only and perhaps first car. With our imprecise map we enter after 15 minutes on both sides at the border Lesotho. Our best information for this day this border close in the evening. Our rough plan make a right circle turn to the drakens mountains and go back to the capital Maseru. How much kilometers our map gives no answer.
We have a amazing experience. After a few kilometers no cars on the street. That fantastic landscape, the round simple local houses, and before we enter the high mountain area lot of walking people on the streets they are very tall and looking very strong at this simple life. On the Map was one main road and then one right. Easy. Yea We saw 3 street signs but no signs show similar names on our map. We have enough petrol? You know how much kilometers we have to drive? No OK .... If we ask someone on the street how many kilometers to Maseru we look in big eyes. How can someone who walk his whole live know how kilometers. Sorry kilometers? OK Thanks it is fine. But all tell us street only for 4 Wheel Drive. No Problem we sign with magic marker behind the sign VW Jetta a 4WD and everything was brilliant for us.
Absolute crazy, stupid or irresponsible. In point of view of today. YES. In this moment it was like a drug. Absolute other world outside the window. Awesome of all this impressions go go forward. And if we go more and more in high area of the mountains the car was bucking. Oh what can be happen? The answer comes from one of this rare broken signs on side of the street. 3222m high pass. What...
And go forward past a ski region (no just one slope with a lift and nobody there) past a diamond mine (Do not enter they can shot! Thanks mean on the street) ah when we have to go right. The Next! Ok sorry sir this the way to Maseru. yes yes. And this kilometers of unsettled road was the best ride ever. River cross with our 2+WD VW Jetta just amazing what is going on here/now jus WOW. Just a few hours ago we sit in an absolute other world in our business hotel in Johannesburg and now Scotty beam us up
The end of the trip was a hill. No chance to go up with our car. OK our situation 3pm and tomorrow 8 am we must go back to work. Our feeling very close to the capital just some kilometers. Maby 70 or max 100... OK cool map. In some hors sunset comes you can not drive here. No chance. Best option at that point in this situation same way back.
Challenge was drive NO race back in the half time to better streets. Don´t ask we did it. Don´t be gentle it is a rental go out at the 24H border back to Johannesburg with many driver changes and stay back at midnight at our crew hotel where some wondering colleges listen our little drive around.
If I lock at google today easy to see we turned 30km to early right and the unsettled road was a short cut and Maseru 300km away!!!
Today as a father it is a very different way to look of this trip. Plans, preparations, safety and so on is having a other priority.
But looking back i will never miss this amazing memory on my first and not last trip to Lesotho.
Looking forward to the next Video from 2013 were we enter Lesotho this time at Maseru.....
Thanks my colleges Dominik and Gerd it was a great day you´re nuts absolutley.
