- Old Havana / Habana Vieja
- Classic Car Tour in a Convertible
- Cuban Cuisine at Nao Restuarant
- Hop on Hop Off Bus Tour

A massive thanks goes out to my Sponsor G Adventures who helped me to pull this off and who were absolute legends in organizing this awesome „Cuba Libre“ tour.

For many years I was searching for a suitable partner who offers tours which align with my style of traveling as well as my values. After many meetings I’m glad I found this partner with G Adventures who offer many adventurous tour packages for travelers like me…but who also care about the environment and local communities in order to execute sustainable tourism. I forced this cooperation because I like the products and the philosophy of the company. Nevertheless all opinions, recommendations and views are my own.

How to Travel to Cuba 2019!

Traveling to Cuba as an American has been complicated for the last 50 or so years. In 2017, more legal avenues started opening for easy travel. Recently the laws have changed again offering a few different option on how to travel there.
There's 4 main things that have changed in recent years: How to go, where to stay, where to eat and internet access. Up until 2017, there were basically 2 ways for Americans to go to Cuba. You could book though an authorized tour group or book a flight to a different country (Mexico/Cancun), book a regular plane ticket to Havana and fly over.

Be sure to Check this video out:

Now you can book direct flights to from the US to Cuba. In order to go, you'll need to delcare a travel category for the purpose of your trip. You can choose between: Family visits, journalistic activity, official busniess of the Government, foreign governments, and certain intergovernmental organizations; professional research and professional meetings, humanitarian projects, activities of private foundations or research or educational institutes, exportation, importation or transmission of informational materials, support of the Cuban people and certain authorized export transactions.
You'll also need to obtain a Cuban travel card. This can usually be obtained through the airline you're flying in on and usually costs $50. Last I checked, the $25 tax to enter & leave no longer applies, things change there all the time so be prepared to pay that or any other un-expected fees.

Finally, you'll need Cuban health insurance which will usually run you a couple bucks a day.

The restricted list is a list of over 100 different businesses that you're not allowed to spend any money at. These are places that are said to benefit the Cuban government more so than the Cuban people. I personally would take it with a grain of salt but an easy way to avoid places like this... Stay in local Casas instead of hotels and resorts. Eat at small local restaurants & bars or with the hosts at your casa. Also talk to them and take their advice. It's pretty hard to get into trouble in Cuba but legally, there are always things that can go wrong.

Finding a place to stay has also changed in recent years. Before recently, a common way to find a place to stay was to just fly down and ask. Most people there know of someone who is doing it and will point you in the right direction.
Airbnb has been there for the last few years. Now you can just go on the site, cruise though and check out all the places available and read the descriptions.
Internet is now widely available there. Just a few years ago, it was so hard to get on the internet that unless you absolutely had to, it wasn't even worth it. The only 2 options were: internet cafe and hotel lobby. The Cafes had a long wait and the hotels would frequently crash.
Now, there are WiFi hot spots through out the city and even some casas and restaurants offer internet access.

Food has also changed a lot. I would still advice eating with the casa you're staying at or in small in home restaurants but there's also a much wider variety of restaurants that cater more heavily to tourists.
People, locals, tourists, classic cars, beaches, the ultimate travel guide.

Varadero Cuba travel tips! | A guide to Varadero town and beach!

Travelling to Varadero Cuba? Here’s a guide on what you need to know before you head out for your #Cuba beach vacation.

We had an amazing time enjoying the beach, seeing #Varadero town and drinking cocktails during our trip in 2019. We put together our top travel tips, recommendations and discoveries from that trip.

Check out Factoria Varadero 43 Cerveceria for a surprisingly amazing frozen daiquiri or Nonna Tina for mojitos! Other options are Casa de la Música, La Bodeguita del Medio and Snack Bar Calle 62.

For great coffee grab a café con leche from El Golfito or Panderia Doña Neli.

For a relaxed, no-frills Cuban restaurant with great food, don’t miss Sabor Cubano.

We recommend walking to get around but cabs are plentiful and can be found on Avenida Primera very easily.

There are shops and stores in town that sell essentials for locals and tourists. Many of which are open late!

You can grab extra cash at ATMs, banks or by visiting the money exchange located in the Centro Comercial Hicacos.

Etecsa internet cards can be purchased at several Wifi Etecsa shops throughout Varadero town. The one we visited was at Avenida Primera and Calle 42.

Tour Cuba in 7 days with MiCuba

Between its rich heritage, historic architecture, and spectacular natural beauty, you’d be hard-pressed to find a destination that’s more intriguing than Cuba. If this island nation is sitting firmly at the top of your travel wish list — or if you’re just curious to learn what all the fuss is about — come along with TourRadar and MiCuba as we explore Cuba like a local!

Although there’s so much more to this country than its world-famous capital, no Cuba itinerary is complete without a visit to Havana. This frozen-in-time city is seriously beautiful, and it’s also a place where the past is palpable. Every sprawling square and crumbling building has a story to tell, so start in Habana Vieja and get lost in the country’s fascinating history.

From Havana, it’s onto to Viñales, where you can trade bustling city life for lush greenery and some of the most stunning scenery in the country. This sleepy, picturesque area is the epicentre of Cuban tobacco culture, and touring a tobacco plantation is an absolute must here. Not only will you learn why Cuban cigars are revered around the world, but this activity is also one of the best ways to get acquainted with Cuban culture and connect with locals.

Next up we’re venturing off the beaten track to visit Cienfuegos, a seaside city that’s nicknamed the “Paris of Cuba” thanks to its distinctly European feel. While you’re here, you can explore its historically-significant sites, wander through charming waterfront neighbourhoods, or enjoy its lively nightlife scene (or all of the above).

The last stop on this week-long tour is Trinidad. Even if you’ve never heard of it before, you’ll want to add this colonial town to your Cuban itinerary ASAP (trust on this one!). Pristinely preserved and largely unchanged since the 1800s, Trinidad is home to a wealth of architectural treasures and notable landmarks. History buffs, prepare to be wowed!

If you’ve been dreaming of visiting Cuba for a while now, we think it’s about time you start putting the wheels in motion on your next adventure! Head over to TourRadar now to explore this itinerary and other amazing MiCuba tours.

Cuba travel tips! | Helpful hints on tourist cards, currency, Airbnb, buses, cash

Going to Cuba raises a lot of questions for travellers: How do the two currencies work? How much cash should I bring? How do I get around in Cuba? When do I get my tourist or visa card? How does the internet and wifi work? (We answer that question in another video!

In this video we address some of the common questions new travellers have as well as add a few #cubatips that we learned during our stay.

The bottom line is that #cuba is a beautiful and exciting country with tons to offer –– from the beautiful beaches to the bustle and excitement of Havana. It’s a country with a few unknowns however –– and it's changing rapidly, so even regular visitors can be surprised –– and the lack of easy internet access can make finding information once you’re there a little challenging.

We hope we answer some of your questions! If you have other questions, we'd be happy to answer. Just leave your question in the comments below! :)

Our tips:

Don't worry about the tourist card: They hand them out on the plane, whether you're on a regular commercial flight or part of an all-inclusive getaway package. Fill out both halves of the card and avoid errors or you'll have to buy a new one. The fee is small, but it will probably delay your entry. This tip is based on our experience as Canadian travellers, we're not sure how it works for travellers from other countries.

Use Viazul buses for inter-city travel: We recommend using Viazul buses, a comfortable and moderately priced bus line with routes between all major Cuban destinations. The great news is that you can buy your tickets in advance at viazul.com. Reminder to check in when you arrive at the bus station. You need to be there an hour in advance.

Or taxi colectivos: If Viazul isn't available, taxi colectivos are a more expensive but quicker to-your-door option. Generally, taxi colectivos will cost 3 times more than the bus. For example, taking the Viazul bus from Havana to Varadero is $10 CUC ($10 USD) per person. A taxi colectivo is about $25-$30 ($25-$30 USD) per person. Taxi colectivos huddle around Viazul bus stations. Drivers will approach you when you arrive.

Bring about $50 USD per day for spending: We recommend at least $50 CUC ($50 USD) per day for spending money for most tourists. Travellers with non-US bank cards can be a little more flexible because more and more ATMs are available, but that can be risky as ATM machines and networks can sometimes be down. So you can't make assumptions that getting cash from a machine is always available. Obviously, budget travellers can get by with much, much less if they stick to street food and avoid the tourist areas.

If you're at an Airbnb, get to know the host: A good Airbnb host can help with everything from restaurant reservations to day trips to arranging taxi colectivos; they will go out of their way to ensure you have a smooth Cuban experience.

Do an extra amount of research and planning before you go: The lack of easy internet means it's more challenging to do some quick research on a destination or activity, or even figuring out local customs. Brush up in advance and bring a good guidebook.

Take Cuba's challenges in stride. It's not personal!: One of the most disappointing things we saw in Cuba was watching a group of rich, entitled tourists walk away from a table full of delicious breakfasts because they were dissatisfied with their orders. The point of contention? Pancakes! Yes, that's right, the restaurant wasn't able to provide pancakes that day, so they walked out.

Use street vendors to get some Moneda Nacional (CUP): Moneda nacional is the currency that most locals use. Tourists use convertible pesos, or CUC. $1 CUC = $25 CUP. To get some CUP –– which is helpful for going off the beaten path and travelling a bit cheaper –– just use CUC at the small food vendors that are found throughout most cities. Your change will be in CUP.

Don't miss the beach!: Even if you're in Cuba just to soak in the culture, make sure you find your way to the beach at some point. They are fantastic, and a great relief to the hustle and bustle of the bigger cities like Havana!
