Nasi Padang - AMAZING Indonesian Food - Beef Rendang and Gulai Otak!

►Read more about this Nasi Padang restaurant here:

I can still remember my first time to ever eat Nasi Padang, when I visited the island of Sumatra back in 2009. I had a plate of rice, piled high with a variety of different curry dishes and chili filled dishes. The combination of flavors and the variety of dishes on my plate just astounded me, and my taste buds rejoiced. Until now, Nasi Padang has always remained one of my favorite Indonesian food meals to eat. And along with being very common throughout Sumatra, in Jakarta, Padang food is perhaps one of the most beloved meals as well, and you’ll find hundreds of Nasi Padang restaurants in the city.

There are two ways to eat Nasi Padang. If you go to a street food stall they normally served it in the pesan way, where you get a plate of rice, and designate which curries and dishes you’d like to eat, and they are all placed on top of your rice - so you’ve got a one plate meal. And this is the way that I’d normally always eating Nasi Padang. But when you go to a nicer sit down restaurant, still very local, they often serve it in the hidang method, where as soon as you sit down, you’re given a variety of all the different dishes they have prepared, and they set them all in front of you on your table. You don’t need to eat everything they give you, but you pay for what you eat, and don’t pay for what you don’t eat. It’s truly a magical way to have a meal, to see all the different dishes and varieties of ingredients all laid before you. The toughest part is trying to decide what to eat.

When I was in Jakarta, thanks to the help of Renis, who invited Ying and I to come to her favorite Nasi Padang Indonesian food restaurant in Jakarta, we ate at Rumah Makan Surya Masakan Padang. What I liked about this restaurant, as opposed to others I ate in Jakarta, is that it seemed not so much like a chain, but it had more character to it. The restaurant is known for its makan Padang, Padang food, and as soon as we arrived, I could smell the aroma of the incredible dishes.

The beef rendang is a famous Indonesian food that’s commonly served at Nasi Padang restaurants, and it’s a dish you don’t want to miss. The combination of chilies and herbs, mixed with desiccated coconut, and caked onto each piece of meat, makes it incredible. Beef rendang is one of the greatest Indonesian dishes. Additionally, another common Indonesian Padang food that you’ll find is gulai otak, which is brain curry, usually made with cow brains. The cow brains are incredibly creamy and soft, and then it was within a very creamy coconut milk based curry. I’m also a huge fan of the different types of fresh chilies and sambals that you each along with your rice and curry when you eat Nasi Padang. Rumah Makan Surya Masakan Padang is an amazing restaurant in Jakarta, and I fully loved it.

Rumah Makan Surya Masakan Padang
Address: Jalan Bendungan Hilir Raya No.15, Bendungan Hilir, Jakarta
Open hours: 9 am - 8 pm daily
Total price - 165,000 IDR ($12.52)

Welcome to our INDONESIA STREET FOOD series! Today we are starting the Indonesian Food tour in PADANG city, the capital of West Sumatra, and home to delicious MINANGKABAU culture and cuisine! Let’s eat!

We are starting our food tour at the beautiful Grand Mosque of West Sumatra before going to a restaurant serving Padang’s most notable dish (or dishes): NASI PADANG! We tasted lots of different rich flavours and different Indonesian spices. Nasi Pandang is a great way to sample lots of different Sumatran dishes. Our entire meal with drinks cost: Rp. 136.400 (USD $9.67).

Padang City is coastal and that means delicious and fresh seafood. We went to a local restaurant nearby for IKAN BAKAR (grilled fish). We ordered a grouper that was marinated in spicy sambal and grilled to perfection. Inside the restaurant, we were given a few small dishes similar to Nasi Padang and a plate of rice. The fish was fresh and quite meaty! Our entire meal cost: Rp. 81.000 (USD $5.74).

We wanted to experience a traditional market in West Sumatra so we visited Pasar Pagi Juanda. It looked like we were a little late to visit the market, which is bustling in the morning, but we got to sample some of Padang’s local fruits like Langsat!

It was time to cool down with a unique drink found in Padang known as Teh Telur (egg tea). What makes this drink very special is that it is made with egg yolk and served with a slice of lime, which you squeeze into the tea. It is sour, bitter and sweet all at the same time. Although it was not our favorite, it was worth a try! The drink cost: Rp. 14.000 each (USD $0.99).

Watching the sunset on one of Padang’s many beaches is popular with tourists and locals alike. Many of the beaches have small drink and food stalls that you can enjoy at the beach, while sitting under an umbrella. We ordered a hot black tea and a hot orange drink (which tasted like Fanta) and enjoyed the sounds of the waves until night time. It was unfortunately raining, but we stayed dry under the umbrella. The drinks cost: Rp. 5000 - 10.000 (USD $0.35 - $0.71).

Something that is common across all of Indonesia is a night time specialty: MARTABAK. Martabak is a thick dough, slathered in butter and stuffed with various ingredients. You can choose between savoury martabak and sweet martabak. We ordered a savoury beef martabak (MARTABAK MESIR) that’s stuffed with various vegetables and served with a spicy soy sauce. These stalls become packed at night time and it is best to visit late at night. Our martabaks cost: Rp. 20.000 each (USD $1.56).

CRAZY Indonesian Food Spread ???????? NASI PADANG in West Sumatra

Jakarta Crazy Nasi Goreng ????
Padang Food is one of the spiciest, bold, vibrant and exciting cuisine in the World. This is the first food vlog of my West Sumatra street food tour, and no better place to start than Padang itself, home to incredible Indonesian / Minang food heritage.

There is a lot of food places that I'll be showing you in this series, but this video focuses on the classic, unmissable, food spots and food to try in Padang. Below is the list of places we visit in this video:

???? Warung Kopi Nan Yo:
This is the oldest coffee shop in Padang, people come here for their famous Teh/Kopi Talua, traditional West Sumatra egg tea/coffee. It'a legendary place, everything looks 100 years old inside, from the menus to the decor. And the coffee with raw egg is to die for.

???? RM Pagi Sore:
Needless to say, there are numerous really good and traditional Nasi Padang Restaurants in the city of Padang; I went for RM Pagi Sore because recommended by several locals, and I'm glad I listened to them. Not only they have one of the best fried chicken I've ever tried, but every dish in that Nasi Padang flavour was a marvellous dance of flavours in my mouth! Obviously my number one favourite dish was the beef rendang, which still haunts me at night.

???? Es Cendol Patimura:
This is the spot to go fo a proper street food cendol in Padang. Cendol is a refreshing drink based on coconut milk and pandan-flavoured jellies. The Es Cendol in this spot also contains shredded durian which made me happy like a kid when I discovered it.

???? Sate Bahagia Indah:
Sate Padang is one of the must try food in Padang. This amazing street food spots make a version of 'black' Sate Padang which is acknowledged to be the most spiced and aggressively flavoured in the city. You try it and initially your mouth copes well, until you go for the second and the third one, and the burning/tingling sensation builds up and, strangely enough, pushes you to eat more...What a food sanctuary.

???? Sate Itjap:
This is another local favourite for Sate Padang. I had to try this one too because they make a sweeter version of Sate Padang, which locals also love. I liked it for the thickness of the sauce which has an irresistible black pepper aroma. When it comes to the meat, I don't have a sweet tooth but it was lovely nonetheless to try this atypical version of Sate Padang.

Jakarta has so much street food that it is really hard to pick which one is the best. So the best would be just to go out there and try all the different types of food that Jakarta has to offer.

Nasi Padang So Good Made Me Rethink My Life ????????

Today we ate nasi padang for the first time in Indonesia and it was incredible.

Where better to try nasi padang than Padang City here in West Sumatra? It would be rude to pass up the opportunity so we headed to a local restaurant for the ultimate nasi padang experience.

The food was fantastic especially the beef rendang which was just on another level honestly.

Indonesian food is pretty bloody good ????????

Indonesian Street Food - GIANT Fried Rice in Jakarta, Indonesia (Nasi Goreng Kambing Kebon Sirih)!

Indonesian street food is amazing!

Nasi Goreng Kambing Kebon Sirih is a legendary Jakarta street food stall that serves nasi goreng kambing (goat fried rice) in a huge way! Although some say that their fame has made them not as good as they previously were, I still think it’s an amazing place with an action packed street food atmosphere that you need to try when you’re in Jakarta.

I watched them making this Indonesian street food specialty and rather than normal fried rice with is dry fried in a wok, this is actually almost more like a biryani. The meat is cooked in a curry like sauce, before a huge amount of rice is added.

The rice was very fragrant with lots of cinnamon and spices added. The meat, some of it was quite tender, while other pieces were a little grizzly, but had wonderful meaty flavor.

When you’re in Jakarta and looking for a legendary Indonesian street food stall, Nasi Goreng Kambing Kebon Sirih is a great place to go for nasi goreng kambing (goat fried rice).
