Luderitz Namibia ???????? Kolmanskop, Elizabeth Bay & Diaz Point

Namibia Road Trip continues to Lüderitz. We travelled north, passing the iconic Canon Roadhouse, almost completely deserted, thanks to you know what. Then stopping briefly at the quirky Seeheim Hotel. From there we turned west through Aus, spent some time watching the wild horses of the Namib desert at Garub and then continued through the bleak desert landscape to Luderitz.

Luderitz is quite a bustling town, once a wealthy diamond mining centre, it's now mostly reliant on fishing and tourism. Kolmanskop Ghost Diamond mining town is a place that's maybe unique in the world. Between 1908, when the first diamond was discovered there, until the late 1920's it was a very wealthy town, with electricity before most cities in Europe, a theatre where acts from Europe would perform, a fully equipped hospital and some luxurious mansions. It's all been left for the desert to reclaim though, once the diamonds ran out, everybody left and the town was abandoned.

Elizabeth Bay, on the coast about 30km south of Kolmanskop, lasted an even shorter time. It's a more industrial decay experience, with massive processing plants, tunnels and railway network. Rusting machinery and collapsed buildings tell of a past where greed ruled the day (pretty much like it does nowadays).

Also worth a visit is Diaz Point, where the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias landed in July 1488. He named the bay Angra Pequena and erected a padrão (stone cross) on the southern peninsula. It's a bleak, windswept place, and you can see why he didn't hang around, but nevertheless it's oozing history and character.

Namibia, The Shining Diamond of Africa (Full Documentary)

Namibia is called “Africa’s Best-Kept Secret,” and at Diamonds International, we have worked hard to maintain this special country’s way of life while working with its people to develop unexpected designs, cuts, and stones to offer the world. The time and effort is worth it: stunning in its own right, featuring sweeping vistas of extreme contrast, Namibia produces some of the most stunning diamonds on earth.

Diamonds International has sourced its stones from some of the most fascinating places on the planet, and in this video, Hon. Pohamba Shifeta speaks to the wonders of Namibia – from the warmth of its people to the greatness of its landscape.

Celebrating its 10 year anniversary in Namibia, Diamonds International parent company ALMOD is being recognized by industry leaders, DeBeers and the Namibian government for its contribution to the beautification of the local communities and for its dedications to skills transfer.

Crown of Light diamond, Diamond's International signature diamond brand is primarily cut in Namibia. This short documentary shows how the growth of the Crown of Light diamond impacted the personal and professional growth of the employees in Namibia as well.

THIS IS WHAT NAMIBIA IS MADE FROM

WINDHOEK
10 APRIL 2021

The Alte Feste received some love and care when a handful of Namibians got together and clean her up.

Armed with rakes, spades, lawnmowers and lots of high spirits about 50 residents got together and cleaned this building dating as far back as 1890.

Though going through various phases of pre and current Namibian history, this building remains one of the few landmarks in Namibia that drew local and International tourists and historians.

This video is not to point fingers or blame anyone, this is a pure indication how Namibians value their country.

Ghost Town - Kolmanskop is a ghost town in the Namib desert in southern Namibia, 10 kilometres inland from the port town of Lüderitz.

Deadvlei - Deadvlei is a white clay pan located near the more famous salt pan of Sossusvlei, inside the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia. Also written DeadVlei or Dead Vlei, its name means dead marsh.

Ocean Adventures - Departing daily from Swakopmund or Walvisbay, we ensure you an unforgettable experience.
Once on the boat, we will proceed to Pelican Point, where you will Experience the excitement of feeding a few seals who might even join us on the boat. Best of all, you will be highly exhilarated to see dolphins riding the bow of your boat.
With a bit of luck you might see a Sunfish (Mola Mola) and the Leatherback Turtles. In season, the larger mammals like the Southern Right Whale and the Humpback Whales may be spotted and occasionally the Killer Whales (Orcas).
Afterwards, just relax on the boat and enjoy a complimentary glass of champagne with fresh oysters and snacks.

Etosha National Park is a protected area in northern Namibia. Lions, elephants, black rhinos and giraffes gather at waterholes such as Halali, Okondeka and the floodlit Okaukuejo. Rough roads fringe the vast white-green salt flat of the Etosha Pan, a breeding ground for flamingos. Other birdlife includes eagles, hornbills, owls and ostriches. Camel thorn trees provide food and shelter for many of the park's animals.

The Hoba or Hoba West meteorite lies on the farm Hoba West, not far from Grootfontein, in the Otjozondjupa Region of Namibia.

Okonjima resort, home of the Africat Foundation, is the luxury resort where ... Okonjima Game Reserve has some of the best accommodation in Namibia, but the ... are opportunities to see these beautiful carnivores in their natural environment.

Vintage German architecture of Swakopmund, west coast of Namibia, southern Africa

Swakopmund is located in the Namib Desert and is the fourth largest population centre in Namibia.

Swakopmund is a beach resort and an example of German colonial architecture. It was founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South West Africa. As of the 1970s, German influences remained evident, including German street names, a German daily newspaper, and the German language being spoken by some residents, prompting The New York Times to describe it as more German than Germany. A 2008 New York Times article describes the town as having the dislocating feel of a Baltic Sea resort set in the tropics.

Prominent colonial-time vintage buildings in Swakopmund include the Altes Gefängnis, a prison designed by Heinrich Bause in 1909. The Woermann Haus, built in 1906 with a prominent tower (Damara tower), is now a public library, Kaserne, Prinzessin Rupprecht Residenz - now a small B&B establishment, Hohenzollern House, Swakopmund Hotel (1900s-built railway station), 1905 Hansa Hotel, 1899 Fachwerk Biergarten, Villa Wille, German school, Otavi Bahnhof building, a Lutheran Church and many other fine buildings.

Other attractions in Swakopmund include a Swakopmund Museum, the National Marine Aquarium, Crystal Gallery, and spectacular sand dunes near Langstrand south of the Swakop River. Outside the city, the Rossmund Desert Golf Course is one of only five all-grass desert golf courses in the world. Nearby is a farm that offers camel rides to tourists and the Martin Luther steam locomotive, dating from 1896 and abandoned in the desert due to breakdown.

THRILLZ:

In April 2017 I left Australia for a solo trip around the world on a BMW F800GS. I named it “Are We There Yet” because I don't know my final destination or the duration of this journey.

Throughout my journey, I was raising money for a young disabled child in Poland named Franek. Franek was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (weakness of the entire right side of the body) and he will require constant rehabilitation for the rest of his life. All the money raised will go directly to helping Franek and his family so he can lead a normal life as best as possible, so please donate generously:

Namibia - Sosussvlei and Deadvlei 2017 (4K)

Visiting amazing Namib desert at Sossusvlei, including mysterious Deadvlei.

For more about our trip visit

We're Going to Namibia!

Today we're heading to Namibia. Well, not quite. Today, we're about to leave for Namibia and wanted one last day to explore around Cape Town before leaving.
It might seem to you that we're leaving for Namibia already after only a couple days. But, the truth is we've been spending so much time catching up on work here in Cape Town, it's actually been nearly 2 weeks.
Still, it's fast. It does feel like we did just get to Cape Town. But, we will be back. We're going to Namibia just for 2 weeks and then we'll be back in South Africa for the next 6-7 weeks.
So, I wanted to use this vlog to explore Cape Point. But, in the end we got there too late and it turns out that the park closes for sunset. So, instead I kind of wanted to lay out what my plan is for Namibia and just after returning from Namibia.
Of course, I have a bunch of new gear arriving after I return from Namibia. I have the Canon EOS R arriving. And, I'll have my hands on the Google Pixel 3 when we get back from Namibia too.
So, for now, let's head north!
