Top 5 Things to do in RAROTONGA Cook Islands

If you're planning a trip to Rarotonga Cook Islands, then you might be wondering what are the top things to do in Raro. This video is here to help you out :)

On this episode we take you along to all the great activities we did during our week long stay in Rarotonga Cook Islands.

Number one on this Top 5 Things to do in Rarotonga video is doing some fun water activities. Luckily we were able to rent some kayaks for free from Pacific Resort which was the place where we were staying. We had a blast paddling our kayaks from our main island all around the lagoon in Muri.

But if your hotel doesn't have kayaks for hire you might want to check out The Dive Centre - The Big Fish for some snorkeling in Raro instead.
Address: Are Tapu Aroa Beach Rarotonga, Cook Islands
For $15 each, we hired some snorkels and had an amazing time looking at all the tropical fishes.

Yen's favourite activity during our stay was visiting:
Te Vara Nui Village
Address: Te Vara Nui, Ara Tapu, Cook Islands
We had a delicious buffet of local Cook Island food as well as an amazing live cultural show. The dancing and energy at Te Vara Nui is fantastic and something we really enjoyed. Definitely a highly recommended experience from both of us if you're holidaying in Rarotonga.

You can also check out Rarotonga town centre. Along the way you can pick up some local clothes and eat at some popular food spots.

To check out the food stops in full you'll need to wait for our Best Eats Rarotonga episode which comes out next week :)

You can also visit the Punanga Nui market while you're in Rarotonga's town centre. Or, if you are staying near the lagoon at Muri, conveniently there is another night market there. The Muri night market dishes cost around about $15 each and you can also expect to pay around $5 for a drink but you have to go early as food tends to sell out fast at Muri night market.

Finally if you're in Rarotonga you have got to do one of the famous treks, whether it is The Needle or Raemaru. They are both spectacular.

We opted for Raemaru Trek as it was a lot shorter. The incline was pretty challenging especially after a few days of rain and so it is best to be careful while scaling the mountain. Also bring plenty of insect repellent as there are a lot of mosquitoes.

We hope you enjoy this Rarotonga series! Check out our other 2 videos here:

3 Unique Rarotonga Tours (Epic Things To Do!) | Cook Islands Ep. 6 of 7

We're nearing the end of our Cook Islands travels, so for this Rarotonga vlog we're mixing things up - here's some unique things to do! ???? Learn how to edit video with Dane — ⬇ More Below ⬇

Welcome back to the Cook Islands, it's our 6th vlog in this series and only one more to go from Rarotonga - man, what a holiday it's been! There's plenty of things to do in Rarotonga, but understandably a lot of the activities, tours and things to do end up being the same just recycled. Like we mention in the video, that's to be expected and we love laxxing in amazing accommodation, exploring the island, snorkelling, visiting the night markets, tasting the food and touring the lagoon — BUT there is so much more!

So for this trip back to Rarotonga we really wanted to pick a few unique things to do, finding some activities that may not be on everyones to do list or at the top of the tours to book. What we found were 3 epic adventures we wanted to share.

Check out the sea scooter safari with Ariki Adventures here —

Hang out with locals and crack into an island buffet here —

Stand up paddle board, catch a sunset, race some crabs and watch a fire show with KiteSUP here —

We were hosted by Cook Islands Tourism to assist in making this travel series in Aitutaki and Rarotonga, but as always we have full editorial control over what we film, what we say, and how we share the experience with you in these vlogs. There’s loads of incredible info about the Cook Islands here for your own holiday —

New Zealand is an incredibly beautiful country with so much to offer — but it's a lot larger than what you'd expect! We're producing the Ultimate New Zealand Travel Guide, a hub full of Kiwi knowledge to help you on your next adventures here. Take a look —

Cook Islands top 10 things to see & do

Cook Islands lie in the center of the Polynesia triangle. Rarotonga is the most populous island of the Cook Islands. You will be rewarded with natural beauty and colorful experiences! The surrounding barrier reef protects the lagoons and beaches for safe and beautiful swimming and snorkeling.

1. Aitutaki Lagoon - The world's most beautiful lagoon with its clearly blue waters and unforgettable snorkeling!
Best place to start your stay: goo.gl/DbH1kg

2. One foot Island - This is the highlight of the pristine natural beauty of the lagoon. Here you can get your passport stamped at the most isolated post office in the world!
Best stay: goo.gl/xZ7rE7

3. Hiking Te Rua Manga The Needle - Part of the Cross Island track, the views from this mountain are superb. Recommended stay: goo.gl/aZRp0l

4. Snorkeling Muri Lagoon - One of the iconic places on Rarotonga where you can enjoy the views of many tropical fishes in their natural habitat. Fabulous beach house to stayl: goo.gl/gJ8OFg

5. Black Rock Beach - The spectacular black volcanic rocks are surrounded by amazingly white sand, making this a perfect spot for a day at the beach. This place is traditionally believed to be the place where the souls of the dead people commenced their trip to the afterworld. You can stay at this villa: goo.gl/0EuBwi

6. Arorangi Cook Island Christian Church (CICC) - The cultural experience of the Cook Islands won't be complete without attending a church service with gorgeous songs. Stay close at: goo.gl/qlWLRT

7. Ancient and modern canoe circles - This archeological site commemorates the 7 ancient canoes (vaka) that completed the journey to New Zealand. The modern circle commemorates the 6 Polynesian canoes that arrived during the 6th Festival of Arts.

8. Arai te Tonga (marae) - The Island's most important marae, or sacred place. It was used for gatherings and prayers.

9. Highland Paradise (guilty rocks) - Cook Island cultural center, where you can learn about the Cook Island Maori culture and history. The guilty rocks are particularly interesting, as those who committed adultery where forced to carry the very large and heavy stones a certain distance.

10. sunset at Titikaveka Beach - During the day a great spot for snorkeling, and in the evening one of the best places to watch the often spectacular sunset!
Best stay at: goo.gl/W2zzHY

Where to eat in Rarotonga, Cook Islands

This is the final video in our 3-part Rarotonga vlog series! It's safe to say that food in Rarotonga really exceeded our expectations. The fish was so fresh it felt like it was caught only a few hours before it reached our plates. Check out this episode to find out all the great local spots that we managed to hit up during our time in the Cook Islands.

We're sure there were a bunch of other fantastic spots that we missed out on, but guess that means we'll just need to make another trip back to Raro one day :) If you're from Rarotonga or you've been there before, let us know where else we should try next time we visit the Cook Islands.

Here's a list of all the places we managed to cover in this Rarotonga food vlog though:

1. Charlies Cafe and Beach Hire - Awesome lil spot. You can either get a mean feed or rent a kayak and snorkel to venture out into the beach which is right next door. Their sandwiches are huge!
Address: Ara Tapu, Takitumu District, Cook Islands
Hours: Monday - Saturday 11am–9pm

2. Trader Jacks - Just the thought of this place still brings smiles to our faces. The crayfish tail we had was so good we came here a second time and ordered the same dish. Peter also got the ika mata here (not shown in the video unfortunately) but believe us, it was amazing!
Address: Ara Tapu, Avarua District, Cook Islands
Hours: Monday - Thursday 11am - 11pm
Friday 11am–3am
Saturday 11am–12am

3. The Waterline Restaurant and Beach Bar - One of the most beautifully located restaurants we went to during our stay in Rarotonga. Right next to the beach and in a charming wooden beach hutt. Also houses the best pina colada Peter has ever had.
Address: Arorangi, Rarotonga, Cook Islands
Lunch - Tuesday - Friday 11:30am - 2pm
Dinner - Tuesday - Sunday from 6pm till late

4. The Mooring Fish Cafe - We heard from our Cook Island friends that this is where locals from Rarotonga go to get a great lunch.
Address: Avana Fishing Club near Ngatangiia District, Cook Islands
Hours: Monday - Saturday 10:30am–3:30pm

5. Bite Time Cafe - This place surprised us with the quality of the ika mata and tuna. We ended up eating here after the Raemaru trek which you can see the whole video in:

Address: Avarua District, Cook Islands
Hours: Monday - Saturday 8:30am–9pm

We hope you've enjoyed this Rarotonga series of ours! Be sure to watch our other 2 videos we made about Raro if you haven't seen them yet :)
