MULTIHULL OF THE YEAR - Results 2022 - Multihulls World - Multicoques Mag

Winner Multihull of the Year 2022

Under 40’ Sail category
MARLIN 33
In this category, where four trimarans were competing, it was the all-carbon model built in Denmark that won by a wide margin, with nearly half the votes. Obviously, we've made an appointment to test this little rocket ship for you!

Winner Multihull of the Year – 40 ‘-45’Sail category
LEOPARD 42
Three cruising catamarans and one trimaran competed in this section, and South African builder Robertson & Caine took the top spot with 37% of the votes - the Seawind 1370 came in second with 24% of the votes.

Winner Multihull of the Year – 45’-55’ Sail category
RAPIDO 50
Victory for this fast and folding trimaran built in Vietnam, came as a real surprise in a category which included models with very distinct personalities. While all the other competitors obtained very similar results, ranging from 17 to 20% of the votes, the Rapido took almost 27% of the votes.

Winner Multihull of the Year - Over 55’ Sail category
OUTREMER 55
Among the five competitors in the largest sailing multihulls category, it was the Outremer that got everyone in agreement, taking almost 30% of the votes, quite some way ahead of the second-placed Lagoon 55 which received 20.85% of the votes. A result that was celebrated at home since the manufacturer is actually based at La Grande-Motte!

Winner Multihull of the Year - Under 40’ Power category
MY4.S
Two cruising boats and two opens competed in this category, and it was the cabin versions that topped the poll. The MY4.S, the new Sedan from Fountaine Pajot, won by a narrow margin over the Herley Boats 3400 (33% against 29).

Winner Multihull of the Year – 40’-60’ Power category
AVENTURA 14
Aventura Catamarans' flagship powercat appears to have made an excellent impression since first being presented at Cannes back in September, taking the top spot in this category with 40% of the votes. The LEEN 56 trimaran came in 2nd place, with 24%.

Winner Multihull of the Year – Multiyachts Power category
SILENT 60
A clear victory for the Silent 60, the only electric catamaran among the four other nominees, with 29% of the votes, demonstrating that both technology and users are now ready for a different kind of boating. The luxurious long Island 78 Power came second with 17%.

CK70 Catamaran - Boat Review Teaser - Multihulls World

► Full test in Multihulls World 189 :

► In recent months, Squalt Marine International has promised the public a 64, then a 67... but it was finally an imposing 70-footer that was moored right in front of our booth at the Cannes Yachting Festival - so we couldn't miss it! Claude Kermoal is well known in the boating world – in both the leisure and the service sectors. The builder, now based in Bizerte in Tunisia, has managed to present a catamaran perfectly suited to long distance sailing in extreme latitudes thanks to its robust aluminum construction. You could easily envisage living on board such a craft or even using it as a base for a scientific expedition. Contrary to many preconceived ideas, aluminum gives a guarantee of excellent weight estimates in these large sizes: at 38 tons on the scales for 69 feet (21 m) of hull, it is almost identical to the characteristics of the Alegria 67, for example. Inside, there’s a very careful standard of finish, and it features plentiful equipment that includes all conceivable options. The construction material obviously allows the catamaran to be customized to a great extent.

► TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Builder: Squalt Marine International
Design: Claude Kermoal

LAGOON 55 Catamaran - Boat Review Teaser - Multihulls World

► 1987 - year of the first Lagoon, the Lagoon 55. 34 years after the launch of the Lagoon 55, the brand’s very first model, the builder who has become the world leader in cruising multihulls is (re)launching a 55... Quite a challenge, but above all an opportunity to measure the incredible evolutions in terms of comfort and ergonomics that separate the two models. The ultimate aluminium catamaran Garcia Explocat 52 Metal multihull for comfortable circumnavigation

o reconcile what might seem contradictory, to bring together what seemed incompatible, it took all the experience of Garcia Yachts, the know-how of its teams, the intelligence of our partners, architect and designer, to propose a new way to explore the world: the Explocat 52.

Twin aluminium hulls with shallow draft, built to withstand all the hazards of the most magical long-distance voyages, with bows that can brave all storms, in complete serenity, the Explocat 52 is perfectly in line with the historical Garcia lineage.

Handleable by a crew of two, who are always well protected thanks to the intelligence of its unique design, its generous sail area and controlled weight make the miles scroll like never before, in first-class comfort.

A subtle blend of proven solutions and innovations that offer you a truly unique sailing experience. This is so true so that the British sailor Pete Goss describes this unit as the ideal machine for everyone being able of “stretching boundaries”.

Naval architecture
Displaying the Garcia Yachts coat of arms on its hull means it perfectly, and in every respect, meets the qualities required of a sailboat designed to sail independently anywhere on the planet.

Designed by naval architect Pierre Delion, the Explocat 52 is no exception to the rule: design, structure and materials are determined so that you can face the most challenging conditions in complete serenity.

With its millimetre-precision deck layout, rigid platform, generous sail plan, serious deck hardware, ergonomic sail handling station offering protection and visibility to a happy crew, the Explocat 52 is the result of thousands of hours of engineering, discussion and reflection, for an exclusive result.

And like the carrying capacity, the water or fuel tanks, the energy sources have also been adapted to meet the most far-off sailing projects, the Explocat 52 is THE catamaran setting new standards for unlimited cruising.

The Explocat 52’s external steering station can also be equipped with a pendulum helm system. This equipment allows you to steer either in a low position sheltered from the cockpit, or high up for manoeuvring and sailing in good weather conditions.

The front cockpit also contributes to making the Explocat 52 an outstanding unit. From this forward cockpit, the crew will be able to carry out various types of observation of the natural environment.

Interior Design
Due to Darnet Design, the interior design of the Explocat 52 offers all the functional advantages of a catamaran on an exploration yacht, with a great panoramic view from every part of the saloon.

Reaching the northernmost latitudes, the most remote islands, can be achieved in unequalled comfort. Insulation, equipment, woodwork and upholstery are all to the most exacting standards sailors demand from the Exploration range.

From the interior helm station, you will of course enjoy the magnificent environment around you, keep watch, and be able to maintain your course on your Explocat 52, nicely warm and dry, whatever the weather may be doing.

The dimensions and brightness of the saloon, galley, cabins and bathrooms, in all the configurations offered or in the one you have designed, are unparalleled. Moving around between these different private spaces, or to the outside, directly to the vast aft cockpit, or via the solid watertight door opening onto the forward cockpit, is exceptional.

With the Explocat 52, Garcia Yachts has given the multihull a reputation, that of the most beautiful of programmes: that of infinite possibilities.

Top 10 Performance Cruising Cats [50 Foot Range, 2022 Models]

If you were to buy a brand new Performance Cruising Cat today, what would you get?! As the Annapolis Boat Show comes to a close, we look at the Top 10 boats we would have liked to see during the show. We provide our thoughts on the types of questions you should ask when buying, what we consider important for a cruising cat, and list the pros and cons for each vessel. Just looking for a particular boat? No problem, just skip to the chapters below:

Take our 1 question survey, which boat would you buy?:

CORRECTIONS:
Since the release of this video we have been informed of a few (inevitable) mistakes. We're sorry! But here are the corrections we wish we could go back and make:
1) The WINDELO price was off badly. We're not sure where we got that information (as price info is hard to find, especially on new boats), but the price should be $1.1m USD. This is down significantly from the $1.6m we reported. It's an interesting boat and one that everyone should check out if you find that layout interesting! And we love their Eco approach. Hopefully that spurs more competitors to do the same.
2) The SEAWIND 1600 is now heavier than reported. After producing the first few hulls they saw a need for improved Heavy Displacement payload and widened it a bit. I'm not sure it affects performance that much, but it is a change from what we reported.
3) The people at ITA reached out to inform us that you can get both Diesel and Electric engines on their new design. Again, this is a pretty cool new boat and very similar to Outremer in terms of design (and probably performance). If you're looking for the fancy Italian version of that French yard, go check them out. Also of note, this boat is Epoxy Infused, which is one of only three boats listed here to have this strong production method.
4) The OC50 from HH CATAMARANS is also Epoxy Infused, making them one of three - along with the KINETIC KC54 (not sure we mentioned that). Epoxy is reportedly 3 times stronger than Polyester and Vinylester (although that depends on the yard producing them). Either way, it is a more expensive production technique and you should know what you are paying for and why. Hope this helps!

BOATS WE LEFT OUT: We intentionally left out kit boats or boats with design plans like Schionning, Chris White and others. While we do have a lot of respect for boats like that, we are focusing today on companies that produce a line of boats and not one-off custom jobs. But that might make for a good future video, so stay tuned! Oh, and we regret leaving the Dazcat out. Click here to learn more:

SPECIAL NOTE: The views expressed in this video are our own, and we were not compensated in any way for making this video. Although we are emotionally attached to our boat and the kind people at Outremer, we tried to be honest with ourselves on what boats we would look at today.

Special thanks to Hans at @GoSunChill who let us use his outstanding drone shot of the Annapolis Boat Show from the weekend! Thanks Hans!

Walkaround and test sail Lagoon 55 Lady M

We finally have the chance to have a good look at the new Lagoon 55 during its stopover in La Grande Motte

This video contains the Lagoon related part of the last episode of our sailing channel Cat Greatcircle.

What does $75,000 to $150,000 buy in a cruising boat today? We look at 4 boats in this category!

This week we explore what you can purchase on the used boat market for $75,000 to $150,000. There are many great examples ranging in age from 16 to 25 years old. Most boats in this range are gas powered and offer space for a small family of friends to cruise to your favorite places. We look at a Searay, Carver, Rinker and Tiara. We love the ocean and boating! We cruise in our 2001 Sea Ray 400 Sedan Bridge, Calypso II, on the South Coast of Massachusetts and Cape Cod and the Islands. Join us on our adventures - we share favorite ports and places to visit, favorite boating products, and how-tos.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

+ Our current boat - Calypso II, a 2001 Sea Ray 400 Sedan Bridge:

In 2019, we wanted a new boat that was bigger and had a longer range, so we targeted 40-footers with diesel power to achieve both of these goals. With our criteria and budget, we searched for a diesel-powered Sea Ray 400 Sedanbridge 2001 or newer. After scouring the Internet we found a boat on the Chesapeake Bay which would become Calypso II.

+ Specs - 2001 Sea Ray 400 Sedan Bridge:

• Length: 40 feet
• Beam: 14 feet
• Draft: 4 feet
• Fuel: diesel 350 gal
• Power: 2 Caterpillar 3126 inboard straight-shaft turbocharged diesel engines 350hp each

2021 North Atlantic Inflatables, 9 8 Aluminum RIB
Tohatsu 8Hp outboard motor

---------------------------------------------------------------------

+ Where we cruise:

Calypso II is moored in Sippican Harbor in Marion, MA - in Buzzards Bay. We use our boat to explore the islands, ports, coves, and harbors of this amazing place.

For overnight boating, we often head to Cuttyhunk Island, Martha’s Vineyard Island or Nantucket Island, off the coast of Massachusetts. In 2021, we plan to head to Maine to explore some of the beautiful harbors and ports of Southern and Mid-Coast Maine.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
+ Our commitment to the sea:

Because we enjoy boating and the fun it brings our family, we are committed to protecting the bays, harbors, and oceans we cruise on, as well as the ones we dream about. Starting with following no-discharge rules, not using disposable plastic bottles, and only using biodegradable products on Calypso II, we try to do our part to preserve this invaluable resource.

OCEAN RENEGADE R5 Catamaran - Boat Review Teaser - Multihulls World

► Full test in Multihulls World Special Edition 18:

► The R5 is the original in the R series of Ocean Renegade and has proven to be a very capable bluewater cruiser. Her design brief was to incorporate a large open layout onto a 54-foot platform that featured both a forward sailing cockpit as well and a combined/convertible salon and aft cockpit. Her sailing cockpit has dual doors and a pivoting helm that allows for 3 different door and sailing configurations. This is a safe and secure sail handling area optimised for single-handing with all sail controls in one location and includes an electric line driver to control the mainsheet traveler.
The R5 was developed to take full advantage of electrical propulsion systems, in particular the Torqeedo Deep Blue system where detailed hydrostatic and flow analysis was performed on the hulls to ensure efficiency. The system is backed up by a 15kw genset for range extension and the BMW battery system provides more than ample power for all the house loads.
Large Corian kitchen and galley countertops, dishwashers, induction cooking, and vast amounts of stored energy all finished in handcrafted foam-cored natural bamboo cabinetry and trims make very comfortable to live on.
The R5 achieves 200 miles per day without generating high loads. She covers distances effortlessly, but can also be dialed up to reward sailors with an exhilarating ride when required. The daggerboards reaching down anywhere from 4'3 of minimum depth to 7'6 at max depth kept us tight to the wind.

The Center Pod - A Unique Feature Aboard Privilège Catamarans

All Privilège Catamarans share this one feature - the center pod. This unique feature creates a place to position a forestay that's not only ideal for the integrity of the rig, but can also be used to install a storm jib. The center pod also provides an area to mount a twin anchor and windlass system with a deep anchor well. Of course, another unique feature on all Privilège catamarans is the large master suite forward made possible by the center pod.

The New 51 Fountaine Pajot sustainable and comfortable cruising catamaran. More space and comfort

The New 51 marks a new stage in the evolution of the Fountaine Pajot Sailing Catamarans range and the desire of the shipyard in La Rochelle to go further in its environmental approach.

A new Deck design that’s easier to move around

The deck layout of the New 51, which has been completely redesigned, marks a new era for the Fountaine Pajot range and provides even more space and comfort. A great new feature for this 51-foot cruising catamaran is its complete opening between the saloon and the cockpit. An innovation that facilitates communication between the galley and the large cockpit table, and which will offer you an even greater feeling of freedom and space, characteristic of the Fountaine Pajot range.

Renewable energy with large capacity

The Fountaine Pajot design office, in collaboration with the Olivier Racoupeau Design team of naval architects, imagined the New 51 to be able to accommodate a large surface area of solar panels without compromising on design.

Its large flybridge, with its friendly lounge and sunbathing area, is fitted with solar panels that are totally flush-decked, integrating with the lines, capable of producing 2000 Watts of renewable energy. A successful gamble that allows the New 51 to generate 5 times more solar energy than other yachts equipped with solar panels.

Space and a multitude of layouts including a 6-cabin/6-bathroom version

To suit the greatest number of people, the New 51 adapts to your desires and your cruising needs, available in 4 different layouts. Each cabin has its own bathroom area, including the 6-cabin version – a first on the catamaran market for a 51-foot model, as is the double Maestro version, another yard exclusive. The Full Maestro version offers a huge owner’s cabin in the entire port hull.

The New 51 is undeniably a cruising multihull that is pleasant to live aboard and respectful of its environment. This catamaran will take you on board for sustainable and comfortable cruising, not forgetting the sailing sensations!
