Tirana is located in central Albania and has been the country’s capital since 1920. And although it experienced political turmoil until 1991, the city has now evolved into the cultural and entertainment center of the country. Check out the Best Things to Do In & Around Tirana:
8. Free walking tour
The first and foremost thing you should do in Tirana is go on a free walking tour. During the 2.5 hour tour, you explore Tirana’s downtown area while learning about the city and country’s turbulent history, art, and everyday life. The tour runs every day from the Opera House.

7. Visit the New Bazaar
Tirana’s New Bazaar (Pazari ri Bazaar) is a newly renovated market that offers fresh fruits, vegetables, as well as souvenirs, local wine, and raki. Around the bazaar, you will find several bars and restaurants to drink and eat at. Many of these places are called ‘zgara’s’, which is a grill house.
6. Go on a day trip to Kruja
Located only 20 km north of Tirana, Kruja can easily be reached by public bus from the “South and North Albania Bus Terminal”. Kruja played a crucial role in the 15th century when it was the center of the Albanian opposition, led by the national hero Skanderbeg during the Ottoman invasion. Skenderbeg is still celebrated here today and there is even an entire museum dedicated to him. You can find this museum inside the beautiful castle that overlooks the town.
5. Wine & dine at Tirana Castle
Tirana also has its very own castle, located in the heart of the city. Only this fortress has been transformed into a commercial space, filled with restaurants, wine bars, art and souvenir shops. It’s actually a great place to have dinner with a glass of wine, and we found it quite affordable as well.
4. Explore Blloku
Another great area for entertainment in Tirana is Blloku. This small neighborhood really comes alive at night and is a trendy spot among locals. In addition to a variety of hip bars, night clubs, and cafés, you can also find some of the best restaurants in Tirana here.
3. Take the Dajti Ekspres
Located in the outskirts of Tirana, the Dajti Ekspres cable car takes you to Dajti National Park which is 1,613m above sea level. It’s easy to get to the cable car station by public bus. Once you’re in the cable car, the ride offers panoramic views of Tirana and the nature around it.

2. Visit Bunk’art
Bunk’art 1 is a large bunker with five levels, which was meant to be used by communist leader Hoxha and his regime in case of a nuclear attack. The bunker has now been converted into a museum, which covers the history of Albania’s past century in great detail. But it’s the preserved rooms, conceptual art, and sound effects that really bring the story to life.
1. Hike Lake Bovilla
Lake Bovilla is a stunning reservoir that lies within Dajti National Park. Surrounded by two mountain ranges, hiking is the best activity you can do here. Gamti Mountain offers the most spectacular views of the lake and doesn’t require any experience. There are even some man-made stairs that help you get to the top.

Number 7.VISIT ANAT-SO-ANCIENT PYRAMID
Visit a not-so-ancient pyramid
The concrete pyramid of Tirana, called Piramida, is just a short walk away from Skanderbeg Square. It was built by the daughter of Albania's dictator Enver Hoxha in 1987 as a memorial to her father. From 1944 to 1985, Enver Hoxha ruled Albania with an iron fist. Today, the building is broken down, missing its tiles, and covered in graffiti. People have talked about tearing it down, but others say it should stay standing as a reminder of how bad Stalinism was.
Number 6. OBSERVE ALBANIA,S ALITE AT PLAY
Observe Albania's elite at play
Enver Hoxha lived in a place called The Block, which was once off limits to everyone except the Communist party's inner circle. Now, it's where all the beautiful people in Tirana gather. There are expensive hotels, designer coffee shops, restaurants, and shops in the world today. Take in the modern glitz from Sky Club, a bar high up in the air that spins and gives you a 360-degree view of the city.
Number 5. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE NIGHTLIFE
Immerse yourself in the nightlife
Tirana's nightlife gets better every year, and the clubs, which are mostly in the Blloku area, have a lot of different themes and vibes. You should go with a local who knows which ones to go to (and which to avoid). But keep in mind that Albania is still a very traditional country.
Number 4. RELAX IN PARKU I MADH (GRAND PARK)
Many people in Tirana go to this big wooded park to relax, whether they want to fish in the man-made lake, have a picnic on the grass, or hang out in one of the many café-bars. Considering how bad the traffic can get in Tirana, this park lets the city's Mediterranean feel shine through.
Number 3. VISIT MOUNT DAJTI NATIONAL PARK
Visit Mount Dajti National Park
If you want to know what to do outside of the city center in Tirana, go to Mount Dajti National Park. It's a popular place for locals to get some fresh air and walk through the countryside. You can take an expensive cable car made in Austria or a cheap city bus to get there. If you want to stay the night, there are hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants there.
Number 2. PAY TRIBUTE TO HISTORY IN THE HOUSE OF LEAVES MUSEUM
Pay tribute to history in the House of Leaves Museum
The House of Leaves is one of the most unusual museums in Albania. It looks a lot like the Stasi headquarters in what used to be East Germany. You should put this on your list of things to do when you're in Tirana.
Once you're inside the infamous National Intelligence Service headquarters, also called the House of Spies, you might not be able to say a word. Inside the House of Leaves, you will learn about how horrible the dictatorial regime in Albania was, as well as the stories of the people who were hurt by the regime but still spoke out against it.
Number 1. ENJOY THE VIEW OF THE ET'HEM BEY MOSQUE
Bey Mosque
The Et'hem Bey Mosque is one of the few mosques that did not get destroyed by the Communists. By the end of 1967, all religious buildings had been shut down, demolished, or turned into warehouses or schools.
Even though the communist government tried to stop them, about 10,000 people went into the mosque on January 18, 1991. This was a big step toward bringing back religious freedom and bringing down communism in the country.
Today, people can enjoy the mosque's beautiful design and the fine wall and ceiling paintings that follow the traditions of the Middle East. The frescoes in the mosque show trees, waterfalls, bridges, and still lifes, which aren't often seen in Islamic art.

Tirana is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Albania having many best places in Tirana. Yerevan, Armenia's capital, is marked by grand Soviet-era architecture. The Places You Shouldn't Miss When You Visit Tirana
Although Albania up until recently was for most people an uncommon travel destination, the country has nowadays become one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. In 2010 tourism in Albania had a growth of 42%, the greatest increase in the world, and as Lonely Planet has recently stated Albania is expected to be the number one destination to be visited in 2011.
If you decide to visit Albania you should by all means visit the capital of the country, Tirana. Tirana, besides being the largest city in Albania, is also the centre of the political, economical, and cultural life of the country. Tirana is a really beautiful city with many interesting sights and beautiful landmarks. However there are some locations that you should by no means miss if you decide to visit Tirana.
You should start your visit in Tirana from the Skanderbeg Square (Sheshi Sk�nderbej), the centre of the city. There stands the statue of Skanderbeg, the national hero of Albania. Across the street you will find the Et'hem Bey Mosque which is considered to be one of the most beautiful mosques in the Balkans with very interesting decorations and artwork inside it. Next to the Et'hem Bey Mosque you can find the Clock Tower, a really interesting and beautiful landmark. Then across the street you will find the National Historic Museum. It is the greatest museum in Albania and is easily recognizable due to the mosaic on the top of its front entrance. The museum contains many artefacts throughout the history of Albania and is really worth a visit. Not far from the city centre you can find Piramida, a site where various conventions and art events are frequently held. Another landmark worth a visit is the Tirana Castle, a well preserved castle dating back from the Byzantine Times.
If you are looking for either relaxation or entertainment the Block (Blloku) offers you whatever you need. Blloku is the most cosmopolitan area in Tirana full of cafeterias, night clubs and bars. Moreover if you are looking for a nice cup of coffee maybe you should try the cafeteria at the Taiwan complex located in the middle of a very beautiful park or the cafeteria at the top of the revolving Tower which offers a panoramic view of the whole city. Finally, before you leave make sure to take a walk by the Grand Park near the artificial lake or by the Lana River a river running across the city.
Tirana does not lack any comforts or luxuries of any other big European city and this is obvious from its really vibrant nightlife. Moreover as far as comfort and accommodation is concerned the city offers the most alternatives in Albania with many hotels in Tirana offering services with very high standards. Additionally, you can benefit from the foreign currency exchange and you can even stay at the best Hotel in Tirana at a very low price (price always compared to the services offered).
