BELOGRADCHIK - Bulgaria

The city of Belogradchik is located in the northwestern part of Bulgaria. It is picturesquely spread over the western part of the Stara Planina Mountain, in the southwestern foot of the Belogradchik garland, at 545m above sea level.

For the initial centuries, since the emergence of Belogradchik, written documents and sources are absent. Archeological studies permit it to bi addressed to the III-IV centuries of the new era.

Well laid out, and welcoming, Belogradchik is one of the most attractive national tourism sites of Bulgaria. The unique nature and rich history inheritance are defined as one of the most interesting and wanted tourism attractions.

Belogradchik is 55 kilometers away from Vidin, and 70 kilometers from Montana. Through the railway station of Oreshets, the city originates a connection with the railway station network in Bulgaria.

The most attractive landamrks in Belogadchik district are Belogradchik Rocks, The Belogradchik Fortress, The Magura cave and Rabisha Lake.

The unique Belogradchik rocks are among the most beautiful natural landmarks in Bulgaria. The Belogradchik fortress was constructed by the Romans in I-III century. The present view of the fortress dates from 1808-1837.

The Magura cave is in the Northwest of Bulgaria, some 180km from the capital of Sofia. It is 17km away from the town of Belogradchik 1,5km from the village of Rabisha, and 35km southwest of the town of Vidin on the Danube. It is hollowed out in the Rabisha hill limestone, 461m above sea level. The Magura is one of the largest caves in Bulgaria. The total length of the galleries, discovered till now, exceeds 2000 m..It consists of one main gallery, pointing southeast - northwest and three side branches. The cave-halls are enormous in size. Each one of them is over 200m long, more than 50m wide and over 20m high.

Next to the cave is the Rabisha Lake - the largest inland lake in Bulgaria. It is up to 35-40m deep. The Rabisha lake is of tectonic origin.

It offers perfect conditions for surfing and swimming. The lake is also an attractive place for hunting and fishing - lake birds, carp and sheet-fish can be found in it.

Visiting an AMAZING Ancient Fortress - Belogradchik, Bulgaria

Bulgaria isn’t where we would’ve been expecting ourselves to visit at the start of 2022, but within the first day of arriving we knew we made the right choice. Starting from the flight into Sofia, and each step along our journey, we met the kindest and most hospitable people we have met anywhere in Europe so far. Add in some incredible scenery, historically significant sights, and amazing hiking and Bulgaria truly left an impression on us.

Our first day saw us explore the capital of Sofia and relax in the hotel spa. The next morning we were on the road and headed toward Belogradchik to visit the historic fort there. This incredible fort is built into the mountains and has some amazing views over the town and surrounding forests. If you are visiting Bulgaria, we definitely recommend a visit to Belogradchik Fortress.

Belogradchik Fortress, one of the best attractions in Bulgaria

The Belogradchik Fortress and Vidin, Bulgaria, 2017

The Belogradchik Fortress is situated at a distance of 1.5 km from the town of Belgradchik among the renowned Belogradchik rocks.

The fortress has existed since Roman times. In 1st – 3rd century AD the Romans built roads in the new provinces of the empire on the Balkan peninsula, as well as fortresses to guard them.

The mission of the Belogradchik Fortress was to control the road from the town of Ratsiaria (near the today’s village of Archar in the region of Vidin). The Romans constructed the highest part of the fortress, called The Citadel.

There are remains of another fortress at a distance of a few meters from it – Latin Stronghold, which served as an assisting fortification.

Upon the separation of the Roman Empire in 395 the Balkan lands entered within the borders of Byzantium. In the end of 7th century the Belogradchik Fortress fell within the territory of the newly created Bulgarian state.

During the time of Tsar Ivan Sratsimir (1356 – 1396) the fortress was broadened and fortified. In 1396 the Ottomans conquered it and later reconstructed it. Garrison for protection of the west part of the empire and for oppression of the Bulgarians’ revolts was built.

In 1850, when the Belogradchik Uprising was routed, its leaders were taken away through one of the fortress tunnels and beheaded. On this place today raises a monument of their heroism. In 1885 during the war between Serbia and Bulgaria (1885) the fortress was last used as a military installation. It was declared an architectural and constructional monument in Issue 41 of the State Gazette of 1965.

The Belogradchik Fortress has three yards separated from one another, the total area of which reaches 10 210 square meters, and one fortification. Even nowadays embrasures (openings) for guns and three bastions and embrasures for cannons can be seen on the fortress walls.

The highest point of the fortress, called First Slab, reveals a beautiful view towards the Balkan.

The region is very popular among the tourists because of the beauty of the Belogradchik rocks and the multiple historical landmarks.

110 - Bulgaria - One of our best days in Bulgaria - Belogradchik

#bulgaria #belogradchik
W!O!W! Bulgaria is such a beautiful country, laden with so much natural beauty. Today was one of our best days in Bulgaria. We start off by heading to Prohodna Cave (The Eyes of God). This is such a massive cave and the openings in the roof of it really do look like a pair of eyes. We then head on to Belogradchik. This place is astounding. We hiked up through the Belogradchik Fortress into the hills behind it and just spent time marvelling at this majestic place. It was also Jen's birthday, and what a superb place to spend it.
Come along. We hope that you will love it just as much as we did.

Please give this video a 'thumbs up' if it was interesting and helpful :)

The COOLEST Fortress ever!? | Sofia & Belogradchik Fortress | Travel Vlog 25

Timings:

00:30-01:30-Cave in Bulgaria
01:30-04:38 Exploring Sofia
04:38-06:24- Belogradchik Fortress
06:24-09:45- Crossing into Serbia

This week we explore the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia, and it's actually pretty cool! We ended up spending a few days there catching up on work, (off-camera because that's not very exciting! :P ) But we did cath Dune in the cinema which was very good!

We also visited a pretty cool cave in Bulgaria. There are LOTS of caves all over the place and Bradley and I have visited well over 50 caves across the world, so we don't do a lot of them anymore unless they're special, and this one was cool. It was a tour...in Bulgarian, so we knew nothing was being said, but still cool all the same.

Our last stop in Bulgaria, before crossing the border into Serbia was Belogradchik Fortress. This actually added on a bit of a 3-hour detour, but it was totally worth it!

It's one of the coolest places I've ever seen!!

Serbia border control was the most intense we've had in 16 countries....BUT there we go.

Hope you enjoyed this video and see you in Serbia in the next one!
